1. A putative function of the transient outward current (ITO) in cardiac myocytes is to modulate the shape of the action potential and, consequently, cardiac contractility. In addition, it has been suggested that this current may help protect against arrhythmias during periods of cardiac ischaemia. In our investigation of the possible anti-arrhythmic action of ITO, we have examined its response to metabolic inhibition and oxidant stress. 2. Whole-cell recordings were obtained from rat atrial myocytes using standard patch-clamp techniques. Inhibition of metabolism, using 10 mM 2-deoxy-D-glucose

Purpose Diabetes is a major cause of ocular morbidity as multiple mechanisms play a role in inducing inflammatory changes in the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common complication and is well-documented. However, in the era of modern medicine, attention is also being focused on ocular surface changes in diabetes. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association between diabetes and ocular surface diseases. Materials and Methods This is a cross-sectional study examining 320 eyes of 160 patients with diabetes who were grouped according to their duration of diabetes. The symptoms w

Canine brucellosis which is due to Brucella canis, is transmitted to man by infected dogs or their secretions. The symptoms of canine brucellosis are similar to the symptoms of brucellosis caused by other Brucella species and endocarditis or meningitis may develop in untreated cases. There is limited data regarding B.canis infections in man and the current status of the disease is insufficiently evaluated in our country. Serological diagnosis of brucellosis is classically based on standard slide and tube agglutination tests. However, the antigens used in these tests detect antibodies that deve

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection with a high prevalence in endemic regions and a strong predilection for osteoarticular involvement. Brucella prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is an exceptionally rare but challenging complication of total knee arthroplasty (TKA), often characterized by delayed presentation, indolent symptoms, and diagnostic difficulty. There is no consensus regarding optimal management, particularly concerning surgical strategy and duration of antimicrobial therapy.
METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed and Scopus, searched on 1 March

Brucellosis is considered endemic in many Middle Eastern countries including Jordan. To determine the frequency, risk factors and spatial distribution of ruminant brucellosis in Jordan, a nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted. Small ruminant flocks (n=333) and cattle herds (n=204) were randomly selected, and their disease status was ascertained by testing individual serum samples using the Rose Bengal Test and a competitive ELISA (sheep and goats) and milk samples using an indirect ELISA (cattle). Information on putative risk factors was collected using standardized questionnaires. A

A national animal disease surveillance network initiated by the Lao PDR government is adopted and reinforced by a joint research project between the National Animal Health Laboratory (NAHL), the Department of Livestock and Fisheries (DLF), and the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU). The network is strengthened by staff training and practical exercises and is utilised to provide zoonotic or high-impact disease information on a national scale. Between January and December 2020, large ruminant samples are collected monthly from 18 abattoirs, one in each province, by provincial

Between 1996 and 1998, a total of 2,494 samples of blood from humans and animals were collected and tested for brucellosis. This total included 1,594 samples of animal blood, collected from 1,050 sheep from 20 flocks, and 544 goats from eight herds. The serum samples were tested using the Rose Bengal test, the tube agglutination test, the complement fixation test and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Moreover, a complete history was compiled from each flock/herd. The rate of abortions in sheep due to brucellosis ranged from 0.5% to 56%, with a mean of 33.2%. The goats had a higher abortion

The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which affects millions of people around the world, has been affecting our country since March 2020. The fact that the symptoms such as fever, myalgia, headache, joint pain which are common in COVID-19 patients are quite similar to the symptoms of diseases such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) and Brucellosis. This may cause a diagnostic confusion in regions where these diseases are seen as endemic. In this report, a patient hospitalized with a pre-diagnosis of COVID-19 and diagnosed with acute Brucellosis, CCHF and COVID-19 during foll

Human adenoviruses (HAdV), species D in particular (HAdV-D), are frequently associated with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Although the infection originates at the ocular surface epithelium, the mechanisms by which HAdV-Ds bypass the membrane-associated mucin (MAM)-rich glycocalyx of the ocular surface epithelium to trigger infection and inflammation remain unknown. Here, we report that an EKC-causing adenovirus (HAdV-D37), but not a non-EKC-causing one (HAdV-D19p), induces ectodomain release of MUC16-a MAM with barrier functions at the ocular surface-from cultured human corneal and conj

Diagnosis of brucellosis basically depends on blood and/or bone marrow culture and demonstration of high titer specific antibody or seroconversion in serum. In routine serological diagnosis of the disease, after screening with Rose Bengal test, the positive samples are studied with standart tube agglutination (STA) test with serial dilutions. However false negative results can be seen in STA test due to the existence of blocking antibodies, this test should be verified with Coombs anti-Brucella (CAB) or immunocapture agglutination (ICA) tests. In recent years Brucella Coombs gel test (ODAK Bru

AIM: To establish a definitive set of diagnostic criteria in a multicentre European study a selected number of oral and ocular tests were performed on a large number of patients with Sjögrens Syndrome (SS) and controls. The diagnostic accuracy of each test for patients with primary and secondary SS and for controls at different ages, was studied.
METHODS: Each centre received a clinical chart describing the series of tests to be conducted. The tests included: questionnaires for dry eye and dry mouth symptoms, Schirmer's-I-test (ScT), tear fluid lactoferrin level (TFLL), break-up time (BUT) an

BACKGROUND: Nonrapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) is a critical physiological state supporting neural plasticity, memory consolidation, and functional recovery after brain injury. It is characterized by thalamocortical slow-wave (SW) activity (0.5-4 Hz) and spindles (10-16 Hz) that synchronize cortical activity and regulate synaptic strength. Thalamic strokes, though rare, often disrupt sleep-wake cycle architecture, NREMS oscillations, and cognitive and sensory processing. Conventional rodent stroke models lack access to deep brain structures and require anesthesia, restricting investigation of

Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a common acute optic neuropathy and cause of irreversible vision loss in those older than 50 years of age. There is currently no effective treatment for NAION and the biological mechanisms leading to neuronal loss are not fully understood. Promising novel targets include glial cells activation and intercellular communication mediated by molecules such as gap junction protein Connexin 43 (Cx43), which modulate neuronal fate in central nervous system disorders. In this study, we investigated retinal glial changes and neuronal loss follow

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis patients exhibit an increased risk of atherothrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke. Clinical evidence suggests that psoriasis patients with early onset and more severe disease have the highest risk for these co-morbidities, perhaps due to the extent of body surface involvement, subsequent levels of systemic inflammation, or chronicity of disease. We sought to determine whether acute or chronic skin-specific inflammation was sufficient to promote thrombosis.
METHODS: We used two experimental mouse models of skin-specific inflammation generated in ei

Corneal injuries can occur secondary to traumatic, chemical, inflammatory, metabolic, autoimmune, and iatrogenic causes. Ocular infection may frequently occur concurrent to corneal injury; however, antimicrobial agents are excluded from this present review. While practitioners may primarily rely on clinical examination techniques to assess these injuries, several pharmacological agents, such as fluorescein, lissamine green, and rose bengal, can be used to formulate a diagnosis and develop effective treatment strategies. Practitioners may choose from several analgesic medications to help with p
