Prevalence of Post-Operative Complications in Autotransplanted Teeth: A Long-Term Retrospective Cohort.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate the prevalence and timing of post-operative complications following tooth autotransplantation, identify factors associated with earlier diagnosis, and report long-term survival and success rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-centre retrospective cohort study was conducted at a Czech university dental clinic (2003-2024); no external funding. Donor teeth were grouped as premolars, molars and anterior (canines, incisors, one premaxillary supernumerary; predominantly single-rooted, single-canal). Root development was classified according to Moorrees: early (1-3), o

Dentigerous Cyst Associated With Impacted Inverted Mesiodens: A Report of Three Cases and a Brief Literature Review.

Introduction: Dentigerous cysts are the second most prevalent type of odontogenic cyst, following radicular cysts, and are primarily associated with impacted teeth. These cysts are most commonly associated with impacted third molars and canines. Notably, approximately 5% of dentigerous cysts are found in conjunction with supernumerary teeth, predominantly mesiodens. Between 1964 and April 2025, only about 51 cases of dentigerous cysts related to impacted mesiodens have been reported in the literature. This article presents three additional cases, accompanied by a concise literature review. Cas

Dental anomalies and dental age in children with down syndrome: a comparative retrospective study with healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) are known to present various dental anomalies; however, evaluating anomaly types together with dental age remains limited, in Turkish pediatric populations. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in dental anomaly prevalence and dental age between children with DS and healthy controls. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a university dental clinic using panoramic radiographs obtained between 2009 and 2024. A total of 61 children with DS and 61 age and sex-matched healthy controls (5-14 years) were included. Dental anoma

Isolated soft tissue cleft lip: the influence on the nasal cavity and supernumerary laterals.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to estimate the vertical deviation of the nasal floor and to register dental disturbances (i.e., hypo- and hyperdontia) in patients with an isolated soft tissue cleft lip. DESIGN: Thirty patients with isolated cleft lips were randomly selected from the files of the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Jaw Orthopedics. As a matched control group, 30 patients were selected from the files of the Department of Orthodontics. Panoramic radiographs were analyzed and the lowest point of the floor of the left and right nasal cavity was measured to t

Interim prosthetic phase of multidisciplinary management of cleidocranial dysplasia: "the Bronx Approach".

This case report presents treatment of two patients with the usual characteristics of Cleidocranial Dysostosis. A multidisciplinary approach using the disciplines of prosthodontics, orthodontics, and oral surgery was effected. Exfoliation of the patient's deciduous teeth and failure of permanent anterior tooth eruption led to emotional, social, and self-esteem issues in both patients. Due to the psychosocial issues confronting these two patients, esthetics was addressed prior to active intervention with orthodontics and after some surgical intervention. The use of two interim overdenture prost

Dental morphologic characteristics of normal versus delayed developing dentitions with palatally displaced canines.

An earlier study reported on the delayed dental age in about 50% of patients with palatally displaced canines (PDC), suggesting the possible existence of 2 different PDC phenotypes. The present study aimed to determine whether the PDC subgroup with late dental age displays different dental features from the PDC subgroup with normal dental age, supporting the above assumption. The 3 dental parameters examined were mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth sizes, the presence of anomalous maxillary lateral incisors, and other congenitally missing teeth. Fifty-eight subjects with PDC, 37 girls and 21 bo

Multiple dens invaginatus, mulberry molar and conical teeth. Case report and genetic considerations.

Dens in dente, also known as dens invaginatus and dilated compound odontoma, is a malformation that can occur on primary, permanent, or supernumerary teeth that is characterized by a deep invagination of the surface of a crown or root covered with enamel. This abnormality in tooth morphology generally affect the maxillary lateral incisors but several cases of multiple dens invaginatus have been reported in the literature. A 15 year-old female patient is reported here presenting five dens invaginatus: four in the permanent mandibular incisors and one in the permanent, maxillary left central inc

Surgical Removal of a Large Maxillary Sinus Mass Containing Three Dental Structures in a Standing Horse.

Dental masses such as odontogenic masses, heterotopic polydontia, or ectopic supernumerary teeth have been documented in the equine head. This is the first case report of a large maxillary sinus mass with 3 ectopic teeth in an adult horse. A 14-year-old warmblood gelding was presented for evaluation of chronic right-sided nasal discharge. After imaging exploration, surgery was performed on the standing horse with a conchofrontal sinus trephination and a large maxillary bone (MB) sinusotomy. The examinations revealed a sinusal mass in the right maxillary sinus covered by sinusal mucosa and surr

Natal and neonatal teeth in newborns and infants: a case-control study.

This study focused on the clinical characteristics and management of natal and neonatal teeth. It included an interview (questions about birth, parental health, pregnancy) as well as a clinical examination (appearance of teeth according to Hebling's classification and their mobility according to Miller's classification as well the assessment of soft tissues). Of the 52 children, natal teeth were found in 38 (73.8%) and neonatal ones in 14 (26.92%). All those teeth were mandibular central incisors. The crowns were normal (46.5%) and shell-shaped with enamel hypoplasia (20.9%). In 14 (26.9%) pat

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome: case report and literature review.

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized primarily by head and face abnormalities. Patients show birdlike faces; hypotrichosis; various ophthalmic disorders; and dental abnormalities including absence of teeth, natal and neonatal teeth, enamel hypoplasia, and supernumerary teeth. In addition, delayed eruption of existing teeth and severe agenesis of permanent teeth are frequent findings. Dental and hereditary disorders can be associated with disturbances during tooth development and cause shortened roots. Short roots are a rare developmental anomaly in the permanent

Prevalence of impacted teeth in a Brazilian subpopulation.

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of impacted teeth in a subpopulation of Brazilian patients based on the retrospective analysis of panoramic radiographs obtained at an oral radiology clinic. Out of 1,977 panoramic radiographs, 1,352 fulfilled inclusion criteria, and 22,984 teeth were assessed. Data were statistically analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov's and Levene's tests; significance was set at 5%. The number of impacted teeth was assessed using analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test. Our results showed significant differences for tooth type and patient age w

Molecular Biological Comparison of Pulp Stem Cells from Supernumerary Teeth, Permanent Teeth, and Deciduous Teeth for Endodontic Regeneration.

Supernumerary tooth-derived pulp stem cells (SNTSCs) hold promise for endodontic regeneration, yet little is known about the similarities and diversities of SNTSCs relative to other dental-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Herein, we compare the biological characteristics of SNTSCs with dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED). Cell proliferation, migration, and odontogenic differentiation potential, as well as viability and aging-related phenotype after long-term storage, were evaluated. Additionally, gene expressions during induced odontogenic

Defining predictors of cleft lip and palate risk.

Individuals with clefts present considerably more dental anomalies than individuals without clefts. We also have shown that these individuals report cancer in their families more often than do unaffected individuals. We investigated how these conditions correlated with genetic variants associated with clefts to ascertain if specific molecular signatures exist that could help identify individuals at risk for having offspring with these defects. We examined 573 individuals, 158 with clefts, 254 unaffected family members, and 161 non-related controls. Several clinical features, such as laterality

Endoscopically Assisted Modified Caldwell-Luc Approach to Enucleation of Dentigerous Cyst With Ectopic Tooth From the Maxillary Sinus.

Dentigerous cysts in the craniomaxillofacial complex are a benign pathology commonly associated with ectopically placed teeth. Owing to slow and asymptomatic growth, they often attain considerable size before diagnosis that may compromise adjacent anatomical structures. Various techniques for removal of dentigerous cysts from the maxillary sinus have been described. This case report demonstrates a hybrid endoscopically assisted modification of the Caldwell-Luc approach to provide the technical advantages of both techniques.
