Biliary tract cancers (BTCs), a group of rare aggressive malignancies, posed significant clinical challenges due to late diagnosis and limited therapies. While gut microbiota had been extensively studied in gastrointestinal cancers, the role of oral microbiota-a primary microbial reservoir entering the digestive system-remained poorly understood. Emerging evidence indicated that oral bacteria might affect biliary carcinogenesis through direct colonization, immune modulation, and metabolic interactions via the oral-gut-liver axis. This narrative review analyzed current research connecting oral

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2013eng
Odontogenic neoplasms are locally invasive oral tumors in dogs. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe CT characteristics for varying histopathologic types of canine odontogenic neoplasms. A board-certified veterinary radiologist who was unaware of histologic findings reviewed and scored imaging studies. A total of 29 dogs were included in the study. Twenty-three of these dogs had concurrent dental radiographs. The most common CT characteristics for all tumor types were a direct association with or in the region of multiple teeth in 96.4% (27/28), contrast enhancement in 96.3%

The major outer membrane protein (OMP) of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is an OmpA homolog that demonstrates electrophoretic heat modifiability. The gene encoding this protein was isolated from a genomic library of A. actinomycetemcomitans NCTC 9710 by immunoscreening with serum from a patient with localized juvenile periodontitis. Expression of the cloned gene in Escherichia coli and subsequent Western blot analysis revealed a protein with an approximate molecular mass of 34 kDa. The amino acid sequence predicted from the cloned gene demonstrated that the mature protein had a molecular

The phylogeny of 20 Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans strains isolated from patients with localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) was investigated by using partial sequence analysis of 16S rRNA genes, arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR), and four additional PCR assays that amplified polymorphic regions in the leukotoxin (lkt), cytolethal distending toxin (cdt), major fimbrial subunit (flp-1), and serotype-specific O polysaccharide gene clusters. Our analysis also included four strains isolated from healthy subjects and nine reference strains. We found that A. actinomycetemcomitans strains compri

BACKGROUND: Neutrophils from patients with localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) exhibit decreased binding and responsiveness to various chemotactic agents, including N-formyl-1-methionyl-1-leucyl-1-phenylalanine (FMLP). This altered reaction of neutrophils is thought to account in part for the increased susceptibility of LJP patients to infections by periodontal organisms. Receptors for FMLP are involved in the activation and the subsequent response to certain chemotactic stimuli.
METHODS: In order to determine if this decreased response is due to a genetic variation in the receptor, we dir

Localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) is a progressively destructive infection of the supporting tissues of the teeth, primarily affecting adolescents. In this disease, patients' polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) exhibit decreased chemotaxis (CTX) and decreased binding of the chemotactic peptide N-formyl-l-methionyl-l-leucyl-l-phenyl-alanine (FMLP) to specific receptors on the PMN surface. Since the FMLP receptor is involved in the activation of the PMN, and its subsequent response to chemotactic stimuli, a decrease in the chemotactic peptide receptor, as seen in LJP patients, is suspected t

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the sixth most frequently diagnosed malignancy, typically metastasizes to the lungs (55%), abdominal lymph nodes (41%), long bones (28%), and brain. Metastasis to the oral cavity, particularly the mandible, is an exceptionally rare phenomenon occurring in <1% of cases. In this case, the patient was presented as metastatic jaw malignancy without preceding any clinical symptoms or diagnosis of the primary intrahepatic tumor. Because these metastatic neoplasms lack pathognomonic clinical or radiological distinctions, they are frequently misdiagnosed a

Diabetes in rats inhibits the migration of neutrophils into the healing gingival crevice, an effect associated with impaired in vitro neutrophil chemotactic activity. We recently described the in vivo response of human and rat crevicular neutrophils to a chemotactic challenge and used this assay in the present study on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Optimal concentrations of two chemotactic agents, casein (0.2 mul, 2 mg/ml) or N-formylmethionylleucylphenylalanine (0.2 mul, 10(-4) M), were placed into the gingival crevices of control and diabetic rats (time zero) after the resting neutro

The potential involvement of the inducible cyclooxygenase isoform (COX-2) and the role of novel lipid mediators were investigated in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. Crevicular fluids from localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) patients contained prostaglandin (PG)E(2) and 5-lipoxygenase-derived products, leukotriene B(4), and the biosynthesis interaction product, lipoxin (LX)A(4). Neutrophils from peripheral blood of LJP patients, but not from asymptomatic donors, also generated LXA(4), suggesting a role for this immunomodulatory molecule in periodontal disease. Any alteration in the balance of bacterial challenge versus the host's ability to resist and repair will result in oral lesions that are similar in appearance. The bacterial cause of gingivitis and periodontitis in humans and in all other animals in which it has been studied is firmly established, and specific species of predominantly gram-negative anaerobes have been implicated. Naturally occurring or acquired immunopathologies are likely to result in premature dental disease. When oral disease is associated with the accumulation of plaque, a positive response can be achieved by reducing the

The periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans produces a leukotoxin that is considered a primary virulence factor in localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP). Select strains of the bacterium contain a 530-bp deletion in the promoter region of the leukotoxin gene operon which results in enhanced transcription of the leukotoxin. DNA hybridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to examine genetic variants of A. actinomycetemcomitans in 24 LJP-susceptible children from 21 families having a history of the disease and 34 control children from non-LJP families. A signific

Background: This study attempts to detect the potential effects of local bone morphogenetic protein -2 (BMP-2) on orthodontic tooth movement and periodontal tissue remodeling. Methods: Forty adult SD rats were randomly divided into four groups: blank control group, unilateral injection of BMP-2 on the pressure side or tension side of orthodontic teeth and bilateral injection of BMP-2. Their maxillary first molar was moved by a 30 g constant force closed coil spring. 60 μL of BMP-2 with a concentration of 0.5 μg/mL was injected into each part at a time. In addition, three rats were selected as

Gemination and fusion are anomalies in size, shape and structure of teeth. Gemination more frequently affects the primary teeth, but it may occur in permanent dentitions, usually in the incisor region. Geminated teeth are typically disfigured in appearance due to irregularities of the enamel. Fused teeth can have separated pulpal space, one pulp chamber and two canals or take the form of a large bifid crown with one pulpal space. It is hard to differentiate between fusion and gemination, especially if the supernumerary tooth bud is fused with the adjacent one. Usually, fusion may be differenti

Although osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ), a serious complication of antiresorptive medications, was reported a decade ago, the exact mechanisms of disease pathophysiology remain elusive. ONJ-like lesions can be induced in animals after antiresorptive treatment and experimental interventions such as tooth extraction or periapical or periodontal disease. However, experimental induction and manipulation of disease progression does not always reflect clinical reality. Interestingly, naturally occurring maxillofacial abscesses, inducing aggressive inflammation of the peri-radicular mucosa with sign

BACKGROUND: Early-onset periodontal diseases (EOP) are caused by interactions between host factors, specific microbial pathogens, and environmental factors. It is, therefore, of interest to investigate the nature of host factors as they may provide useful risk markers and reveal important information regarding the disease pathogenesis. Genetic polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene are associated with parameters of bone homeostasis and with diseases in which bone loss is a cardinal sign, in particular osteoporosis. Rapidly progressive bone loss is one feature of EOP. We, therefore,

Despite extensive efforts, half of patients with rare movement disorders such as hereditary spastic paraplegias and cerebellar ataxias remain genetically unexplained, implicating novel genes and unrecognized mutations in known genes. Non-coding DNA variants are suspected to account for a substantial part of undiscovered causes of rare diseases. Here we identified mutations located deep in introns of POLR3A to be a frequent cause of hereditary spastic paraplegia and cerebellar ataxia. First, whole-exome sequencing findings in a recessive spastic ataxia family turned our attention to intronic va

A 4-year-old child was referred, in April 1988, to Rennes Dental School (France) for deciduous tooth mobility with premature loss of 4 deciduous teeth and germs of 2 permanent incisors. Microbiological examinations by culture revealed the presence of the periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. Immunofluorescence of plaque samples revealed the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis that had not been isolated by culture. Neutrophil functions were within normal ranges. Transmission electron microscopy of gingiva showed a disorganised epithelium. The connective tissue was infiltra

The successful management of multi-space orofacial odontogenic infections involves identification of the source of the infection, the anatomical spaces encountered, the predominant microorganisms that are found during the various stages of odontogenic fascial space infection, the impact of the infectious process on defense systems, the ability to use and interpret laboratory data and imaging studies, and a thorough understanding of contemporary antibiotic and supportive care. The therapeutic goals, when managing multi-space odontogenic infections, are to restore form and/or function while limi

OBJECTIVE: Following publication of the first reports of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in patients receiving bisphosphonates in 2003, a call for national multidisciplinary guidelines based upon a systematic review of the current evidence was made by the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (CAOMS) in association with national and international societies concerned with ONJ. The purpose of the guidelines is to provide recommendations regarding diagnosis, identification of at-risk patients, and prevention and management strategies, based on current evidence and consensus. Chronic periodontitis (CP) is a multifactorial oral inflammatory disease characterized by progressive destruction of bone and ultimate tooth loss. The alarming rise in the prevalence of periodontitis has led to the development of innovative diagnostic techniques. Several quantifiable biomarkers in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva of chronic periodontitis patients have been detected in the field of oral fluid diagnostics. Bone turnover biomarkers hold a valuable diagnostic potential in determining the extent of alveolar bone destruction and the risk of future bone loss. This revie
