Transactivation (TAR) DNA binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43) inclusions frequently occur as a comorbid pathology in several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, Lewy body disease, and progressive supranuclear palsy, and may appear in association with nondegenerative neurological etiology, for example neoplastic, paraneoplastic, traumatic, or infectious. Relationships between various pathological proteins and mechanisms associated with TDP-43-induced neurodegeneration are still not fully understood. Thus, overlap of distinct neuropathological mechanisms

Prophylaxis of aphakic cystoid macular edema without corticosteroids. A paired-comparison, placebo-controlled double-masked study.

Prior investigations have reported that topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) therapy prevents the development of postoperative angiographic signs of angiographic cystoid macular edema (CME). However, these studies include concurrent use of corticosteroids. The current study reports therapeutic efficacy for ketorolac ophthalmic solution (an NSAID) in the prophylaxis of angiographic aphakic CME (ACME) after cataract surgery without concurrent corticosteroids for the first time. Fifty patients with bilateral cataracts were enrolled in this placebo-controlled, paired-comparison, dou

Keratometric and refractive results of pediatric epikeratophakia.

Keratometric and refractive results of pediatric epikeratophakia showed that patients under 1 year of age had steeper corneas preoperatively and required more correction, as estimated by the Sanders-Retzlaff-Kraff regression formula. The average spherical equivalent of refractive error six months postoperatively was +6.92 +/- 4.67 diopters in patients under 1 year, and -0.72 +/- 4.22 D in patients over 1 year. Three of 14 younger patients and 35 of 54 older patients were within 3 D of emmetropia. Since March 1982, significant undercorrection has occurred only in patients 6 months old or younge

Extended-wear contact lenses in patients with corneal grafts and aphakia.

Extended-wear contact lenses (EWCL) were fitted successfully on 61 aphakic eyes with penetrating corneal grafts. In two- to 32-months follow-up there were 26 eyes that had varying amounts of superficial neovascularization of the grafts and one Staphylococcus epidermidis corneal graft ulcer. There were five homograft rejections, all occurring in severely diseased eyes. Variable vision and visual acuity less than that with hard contact lenses or aphakic spectacles were the most frequent problems. Both were due to the high corneal astigmatism present in many patients. The results indicate that EW
