Prevalence and association of headaches, temporomandibular joint disorders, and occlusal interferences.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although an interaction of malocclusion, parafunction, and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can be inferred from the experience of daily practice, scientific evidence to corroborate this hypothesis does not exist. However, there are indications that TMD and headaches may be intertwined. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the presence or absence of an association of occlusal interferences, parafunction, TMD, or physiologic, muscular, or prosthodontic factors with the occurrence of headache. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a private practice population of

Estrogen replacement therapy among postmenopausal women and its effects on signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders.

The prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is about two to five times higher in females than in males. Data for the higher prevalence of TMD in women and prevalence rates peak during the reproductive years and decrease after menopause. This indicated that female sex hormones may play a role in the etiology or maintenance of TMD. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between postmenopausal hormone use and TMD in Turkish postmenopausal women. One hundred-eighty (180), postmenopausal women, aged 42-72 years, were examined both clinically and by questionnaire with rega

The Role of Polysomnography for Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Objective: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. In recent years, studies have shown that patients with ADHD often experience sleep problems, raising clinical interest in the potential role of polysomnography (PSG) in the diagnosis and management of ADHD. This study examines polysomnographic findings in children with ADHD who present with diverse sleep complaints. Methods: A cohort of children aged younger than 18 years, diagnosed with ADHD based on DSM-5 criteria

Automatic Sleep-Stage Scoring in Healthy and Sleep Disorder Patients Using Optimal Wavelet Filter Bank Technique with EEG Signals.

Sleep stage classification plays a pivotal role in effective diagnosis and treatment of sleep related disorders. Traditionally, sleep scoring is done manually by trained sleep scorers. The analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals recorded during sleep by clinicians is tedious, time-consuming and prone to human errors. Therefore, it is clinically important to score sleep stages using machine learning techniques to get accurate diagnosis. Several studies have been proposed for automated detection of sleep stages. However, these studies have employed only healthy normal subjects (good sleep

A longitudinal epidemiologic study of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders from 15 to 35 years of age.

AIMS: To study the development over 20 years of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in an epidemiologic sample and to analyze possible correlations between these signs and symptoms and some other variables. METHODS: The original group comprised 135 randomly selected 15-year-old subjects who were examined clinically and by means of a questionnaire for signs and symptoms of TMD. The examination was repeated after 5, 10, and 20 years by the same methods. After 20 years, when the original group had reached the age of 35 years, 124 individuals (92%) could be traced, and they we

Waking-state oral parafunctional behaviors: specificity and validity as assessed by electromyography.

In contrast to sleep-related oral parafunctional behaviors, little is known about waking oral parafunctional behaviors. The Oral Behaviors Checklist contains terms referring to a variety of non-observable behaviors that are reliable when prompted (e.g. 'clench') but validity data are absent. Our goal was to assess whether (i) each behavioral term is distinct electromyographically, and (ii) temporomandibular disorder (TMD) subjects differ from non-TMD subjects in their performance. Surface electromyographic (EMG) activity was used to measure bilateral masseter, temporalis, and suprahyoid muscle

Change in the number of occlusal contacts following splint therapy in patients with a temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

The mean number of occlusal contacts before and after occlusal appliance therapy were compared in three temporomandibular disorder groups and one control group. Only patients with a successful treatment outcome were considered in the statistical analysis. Statistically significant changes were seen in the disc displacement with reduction group, which was managed with anterior repositioning splint: the mean number of contacts increased 3 months after weaning off the splint. If the disc is out of position then the number of occlusal contacts appears to be reduced. It would therefore appear to be

Conservative therapy for the treatment of patients with somatic tinnitus attributed to temporomandibular dysfunction: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a highly prevalent symptom affecting 10-15% of the adult population. It often affects patient quality of life and frequently causes distress. When subjective tinnitus can be elicited by the somatosensory system of the cervical spine or temporomandibular area it is termed somatic tinnitus. The first aim of the current study is to investigate the effect of the best evidence conservative temporomandibular disorder (TMD) treatment on tinnitus in patients with co-existence of tinnitus and TMD or oral parafunctions compared to no treatment. The second aim is to identify a sub

[Mercury impregnation in dentists and dental assistants in Monastir city, Tunisia].

INTRODUCTION: The property of mercury to amalgamate with other metals is used to create a material for filling teeth. This material remains the cheapest and most efficient in tooth restoration. Mercurial toxicity has been documented since Antiquity but the metal remains widely used in some countries. This study compared mercury impregnation in dentists and dental assistants in Monastir (Tunisia) to another population not exposed professionally. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was made on 52 dentists and dental assistants working in private offices and in the stomatology unit of

Study of the different sleep disturbances during the prodromal phase of depression and mania in bipolar disorders.

BACKGROUND: One of the challenges in bipolar disorder (BD) lies in early detection of the illness and its recurrences, to improve prognosis. Sleep disturbances (SD) have been proposed as reliable predictive markers of conversion. While preliminary studies have explored the relationship between SD and the onset of mood episodes, the results remain heterogeneous and a few have specifically examined patients' perception of prodromal symptoms and their progression until the episode occurs. Identifying prodromes represents a crucial clinical challenge, as it enables early intervention, thereby redu

The South Texas Oral Health Network Study of Practitioners' Approaches to Oral Appliance Therapy Titration for Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Their Impact on Patient Outcomes (PAOSA): Protocol for a Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Oral appliance therapy (OAT) is a widely used treatment for obstructive sleep apnea; however, titration approaches remain variable and lack standardization across clinical practice. Existing evidence is largely derived from academic or specialty sleep centers, with limited data on how titration strategies are implemented and perform in real-world dental settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate real-world titration approaches for OAT within a dental practice-based research network and to assess their impact on treatment effectiveness and patient-centered outcomes. METHODS:

Assessment of Sleep Habit and Oral Habits in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Cross-sectional Study.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: A healthy metabolic, cognitive, and physical wellness requires sleep. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are prone to sleep disturbances, which exacerbates the behavioral and cognitive issues. Likewise, the sleep problems co-occur with oral habits. This study aims to assess and compare the sleep habit and oral habits of children with ASD and ADHD with those of neurotypical children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 96 children between the ages 4 and 10 were included. They

The Hungarian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile.

Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is increasingly of interest in dentistry. The current internationally accepted instruments used to measure OHRQoL need to be cross-culturally adapted for use in other cultural environments. It was the aim of the present study to develop a Hungarian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-H) following accepted guidelines. The original English-language version was translated into Hungarian, back-translated into English, and tested for its psychometric properties. Construct validity was tested on 144 prosthodontic patients and 200 randomly sele

Immediately loaded implants in a patient with involuntary mandibular movements: a clinical report.

Immediately loaded implant prostheses have been used to successfully rehabilitate completely edentulous arches. Risk factors for successful treatment have not included involuntary mandibular movements. The treatment was completed on a patient with a history of neuroleptic medications who had remaining mandibular teeth extracted and then developed involuntary mandibular movements. The patient was dissatisfied with a mandibular removable prosthesis and wanted a fixed prosthesis. The immediate implant loading of a complete arch fixed prosthesis was delivered, and the patient lost 3 of the 6 impla

Association between Clinical Manifestations in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Corresponding Radiographic Findings.

Background: Temporomandibular disorders are common conditions characterized by discomfort within the temporomandibular joints, acoustic changes, and restricted mandibular movement. Accurate diagnosis and subsequent treatment rely heavily on clinical examination, but it is often necessary to add radiological examinations to the diagnostics. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for visualizing the disc, while cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is primarily used for evaluating condylar morphology. Ultrasound (US) serves as a real-time imaging modality for soft tissues. The obje

An analysis of human skeletal remains with cerebral palsy: associated skeletal age delay and dental pathologies.

In 2002 the authors were asked to examine the skeletal remains of an individual with a known history of severe cerebral palsy (CP) who was 21-23 years old at death. Skeletal age estimates of 11-15 years and dental age estimates of c. 16 years are younger than the known age of the decedent. Skeletal analysis also identified dental pathologies such as chronic tooth grinding and substantial calculus deposits. Scarce literature exists on forensic human remains cases with CP, and this study contrasts the age discrepancy and other features of this case with typical clinical characteristics of CP. A
