[Parasuicide and violence: criminological aspects from a study of 21,314 male army recruits in Switzerland].

Suicidal behaviors are not uncommon, but rarely admitted in the families and in society at large. Violence is a public health and social problem of growing concern. Research on the relationship between violence and suicidal behaviors is scarce for the last decades, perhaps because suicide is no longer considered an offense. The present study is based on a sample of 21,314 valid interviews with 20 year old Swiss men, representing over 70% of this cohort. The questionnaire contained over 900 variables, addressing issues such as previous history of parasuicide, self-reported violent acts and inju

Men in Community Correction Programs and Their Female Primary Sex Partners: Latent Class Analysis to Identify the Relationship of Clusters of Drug Use and Sexual Behaviors and HIV Risks.

Existing research indicates that justice-involved individuals use a variety of different drugs and polysubstance use is common. Research shows that different typologies of drug users, such as polydrug users versus users of a single drug, have differing types of individual-, structural-, and neighborhood-level risk characteristics. However, little research has been conducted on how different typologies of drug use are associated with HIV risks among individuals in community corrections and their intimate sex partners. This paper examines the different types of drug use typologies among men in c

Neuropsychological and Criminological Features of Female Homicide Offenders.

Few studies have examined life history and cognitive characteristics unique to female homicide offenders. Understanding these characteristics could aid in risk assessment for extreme violence in this group of offenders. The current study utilized t-tests or chi-square tests to compare 27 female and 81 male homicide offenders on psychiatric, neurologic, criminal, and cognitive characteristics. Additionally, we explored the role of abuse history in female offenders through Kruskal-Wallis or Fisher's exact tests. Results indicate that in comparison with male counterparts, females are more likely

Older offenders deemed criminally irresponsible in Flanders (Belgium): Descriptive results from a retrospective case note study.

INTRODUCTION: In Belgium, offenders who are deemed criminally irresponsible for their criminal actions because of mental illness or intellectual disability are subject to a specific safety measure with the dual objective of protecting society and providing mandated care to the offender. While Belgian law requires that offenders who are deemed criminally irresponsible should be in a hospital, clinic or other appropriate institution outside of prison, in practice, about one-third of all such offenders still reside in prison. Whether imprisoned or living in settings outside prison, there is a dea

Homicides with mutilation of the victim's body.

Information on homicide offenders guilty of mutilation is sparse. The current study estimates the rate of mutilation of the victim's body in Finnish homicides and compares sociodemographic characteristics, crime history, life course development, psychopathy, and psychopathology of these and other homicide offenders. Crime reports and forensic examination reports of all offenders subjected to forensic examination and convicted for a homicide in 1995-2004 (n = 676) were retrospectively analyzed for offense and offender variables and scored with the Psychopathy Check List Revised. Thirteen homici

The Influence of Media Violence on Youth.

Research on violent television and films, video games, and music reveals unequivocal evidence that media violence increases the likelihood of aggressive and violent behavior in both immediate and long-term contexts. The effects appear larger for milder than for more severe forms of aggression, but the effects on severe forms of violence are also substantial (r = .13 to .32) when compared with effects of other violence risk factors or medical effects deemed important by the medical community (e.g., effect of aspirin on heart attacks). The research base is large; diverse in methods, samples, and

Predicting suicide attempt or suicide death following a visit to psychiatric specialty care: A machine learning study using Swedish national registry data.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major public health concern globally. Accurately predicting suicidal behavior remains challenging. This study aimed to use machine learning approaches to examine the potential of the Swedish national registry data for prediction of suicidal behavior. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The study sample consisted of 541,300 inpatient and outpatient visits by 126,205 Sweden-born patients (54% female and 46% male) aged 18 to 39 (mean age at the visit: 27.3) years to psychiatric specialty care in Sweden between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2012. Retention in Georgia opioid substitution therapy program and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Substance abuse has been considered as a growing challenge in Georgia that is closely linked with human immune deficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C transmission due to unsafe injection and other uncontrolled behaviors. Methadone maintenance therapy is one of the major treatment options for opioid-dependent individuals. It has proven efficacy in decreasing illegal opioid consumption and criminal behavior as well as reducing the level of HIV infection, mortality, HCV infection, and increasing social functioning. METHODS: The data was initially extracted from the electronic databas

Prenatal and infancy home visitation by nurses: recent findings.

This article describes a 20-year program of research on the Nurse Home Visitation Program, a model in which nurses visit mothers beginning during pregnancy and continuing through their children's second birthdays to improve pregnancy outcomes, to promote children's health and development, and to strengthen families' economic self-sufficiency. The results of two randomized trials (one in Elmira, New York, and the second in Memphis, Tennessee) are summarized, and an ongoing trial in Denver, Colorado, is briefly described. Results of the Elmira and Memphis trials suggest the following: The progra

Latent classes of substance use patterns and cannabis use disorder Risk in U.S. Adults during recreational Legalization expansion (2015-2023).

BACKGROUND: Traditional surveillance may not capture heterogeneous patterns of cannabis use disorder (CUD) risk during policy transitions. We used latent class analysis (LCA) to identify substance use patterns associated with varying CUD risk during U.S. recreational cannabis legalization expansion (2015-2023). METHODS: We analyzed 326,193 U.S. adults aged 18 + from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015-2023, excluding 2021). LCA identified classes based on eight indicators: past-year alcohol and cannabis use disorders, lifetime use of alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and heroin, and ar

A prospective follow-up study of alcoholic violent offenders and fire setters.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated biochemical and family variables and predictors of recidivism among forensic psychiatric patients who had committed violent offenses or set fires. METHODS: One hundred fourteen male alcoholic violent offenders and fire setters were followed up for an average of 4.5 years after release from prison. At the beginning of their incarceration, the first half of the offenders were administered clinical diagnostic interviews, whereas the latter half received the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III (SCID) that was blind rated. Criminality of the mentally ill in sheltered care: are they more dangerous?

The sample of mental patients in sheltered care has a lower arrest rate than the general population in California in all categories of crimes, except for violent crimes. For violent crimes, the sheltered-care population is likely to be arrested at 1.33 times the rate of the state population, even when the heterogeneity of aggravated assault was taken into consideration. This indicates empirically that the mentally ill in sheltered care are more dangerous than the general population. For prediction of criminality, four factors are found to be significant predictors of resident criminality after

Psychotherapist-patient sexual contact after termination of treatment: an analysis and a proposal.

Controversy over the legitimate extent, if any, of sexual contact between psychotherapists and former patients remains intense. In this paper the authors review current approaches to controlling posttermination sexual contact, offer a conceptual framework within which the problematic aspects of therapist-patient sex both during and after treatment can be understood, and develop a set of recommendations for policies that balance the goals of protecting former patients and avoiding unnecessary interventions into consensual relationships. Review of ethical, legal, and administrative controls on p

Predictors of incident and recurrent participation in the sale or delivery of drugs for profit amongst young methamphetamine users in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand, 2005-2006.

BACKGROUND: Despite Thailand's war on drugs, methamphetamine ("yaba" in Thai) use and the drug economy both thrive. This analysis identifies predictors of incident and recurrent involvement in the sale or delivery of drugs for profit amongst young Thai yaba users. METHODS: Between April 2005 and June 2006, 983 yaba users, ages 18-25, were enrolled in a randomized behavioural intervention in Chiang Mai Province (415 index and 568 of their drug network members). Questionnaires administered at baseline, 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month follow-up visits assessed socio-demographic factors, current and pri

Comparing Behavioral Health Outcomes and Treatment Utilization of Those With and Without Justice Involvement Within the Past Year Among American Indian and Alaska Native Adults.

Similar to other populations, worse health, increased emergency healthcare utilization, and heightened substance misuse are correlated with higher justice involvement among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. The historical context and resulting contemporary injustices for AI/AN populations have directly contributed to higher rates of these health and behavioral health conditions among this population. As a result, AI/AN individuals have disproportionate rates of incarceration in the USA, with young AI/AN males having the highest odds of incarceration when compared to any other

Pre-post differences in outcomes associated with participation in the Criar sin violencia © brief psychotherapy protocol in an Ecuadorian sample: an observational study.

Domestic violence against children is a form of co-living violence that is widespread worldwide. In Ecuador, verbal and physical aggression against children is often used to correct misbehavior. Exposure to this violence during childhood is associated with adverse mental health outcomes, the intergenerational transmission of domestic violence, and a an increased likelihood of involvement in criminal activity in adulthood. Individual interventions have been found to be effective to address some of the factors that endorse abusive parenting. In 2023, the protocol of brief psychodynamic psychothe

Factors Associated With All-Cause Mortality in a Western State Prison System, 1999-2020.

INTRODUCTION: Incarceration is linked to mortality, yet specific factors associated with death during imprisonment remain poorly understood, limiting efforts to identify vulnerable populations and develop effective prevention strategies in carceral settings. METHODS: Administrative records from 91,979 adults who served any portion of their sentence in a Western U.S. state prison system between 1999 and 2020 were analyzed. Complementary log-log regression was used to identify demographic, criminal history, institutional, and behavioral health-related factors associated with all-cause mortality
