The Estuary Effect: Variations in Temperature and Salinity Alter msh Promoter Activity in Vibrio cholerae.

UNLABELLED: Vibrio cholerae , the facultative pathogen underlying cholera, naturally inhabits warm aquatic estuaries. Environmental persistence is enhanced by the ability of V. cholerae to colonize host reservoirs and form multicellular biofilms, causing seasonally endemic outbreaks in many tropical regions. Most toxigenic strains utilize the type IVa mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA) pilus for host reservoir colonization and biofilm formation. Temperature and salinity can alter V. cholerae biofilm formation, yet their impact on MSHA production specifically remains largely unknown. Here,

Multilayered regulation of BDNF DNA methylation in PTSD: a review from molecular mechanisms to trans generational inheritance.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder triggered by a traumatic event. Its core features include intrusive flashbacks, persistent avoidance, negative cognition and mood changes, and heightened arousal. The global lifetime prevalence is approximately 3.9%, exceeding 5.0% in high-income countries and high-trauma-exposed populations. With rising incidence of natural disasters, violent conflicts, and public health incidents worldwide, PTSD has become a serious public health issue threatening people's mental health. However, its pathogenesis remains largely unknown,

Shift-and-persist strategies as a potential protective factor against symptoms of psychological distress among young adults in Puerto Rico.

OBJECTIVE: Residents of Puerto Rico are disproportionately exposed to social and environmental stressors (e.g., Hurricane María and the 2020 sequence of tremors) known to be associated with psychological distress. Shift-and-persist (SP), or the ability to adapt the self to stressors while preserving focus on the future, has been linked with lower psychological distress, but no study has evaluated this in Puerto Rico. This study examined the association between SP and psychological distress (including that from natural disasters) in a sample of young adults in Puerto Rico. METHODS: Data from t

The relationship between perceived stress and support with blood pressure in urban Haiti: A cross-sectional analysis.

Haiti is a low-income country whose population lives under repeated and chronic stress from multiple natural disasters, civil unrest, and extreme poverty. Stress has been associated with cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors including hypertension, and the impact of stress on blood pressure may be moderated by support. The distribution of stress, support, and their association with blood pressure has not been well described in low-income countries. We measured stress and support using validated instruments on cross-sectional enrollment data of a population-based cohort of 2,817 adults living in Po

Postpartum depression crisis since the second lockdown and 'screening paradox': many women identified, very few treated.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to stressful situations, such as emergencies, infectious diseases, and natural disasters, may lead to a heightened risk of perinatal mental health problems. Declared on March 11th, 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic triggered an additional burden on women in the perinatal period. Safety recommendations, such as social distancing and isolation, were opposite to the usual advice given to new mothers. Besides fear, changes in financial stability and daily life reorganization contributed to increased depressive symptoms. As the periods of epidemic waves and lockdowns were assoc

Nursing Unit Communication During a US Public Health Emergency: Natural Experiment.

BACKGROUND: In the second half of 2014, the first case of Ebola virus disease (EVD) was diagnosed in the United States. During this time period, we were collecting data for the Measuring Network Stability and Fit (NetFIT) longitudinal study, which used social network analysis (SNA) to study relationships between nursing staff communication patterns and patient outcomes. One of the data collection sites was a few blocks away from where the initial EVD diagnosis was made. The EVD public health emergency during the NetFIT data collection time period resulted in the occurrence of a natural experim

The lived experiences and perceptions of middle-aged adults in Dominica who have survived severe storms-a qualitative exploration.

INTRODUCTION: The Eastern Caribbean island of Dominica has experienced diverse negative effects from the North Atlantic hurricane season, including deadly storms like Hurricane Maria in 2017. Vulnerability is increased by geographic location, small island developing state (SIDS) status, and ecosystem characteristics. A variety of negative health effects including stress and anxiety are caused by powerful storms. The perspectives of middle-aged (the "sandwich generation") survivors in this post-storm milieu are understudied. METHODS: This phenomenological qualitative study describes the percep

Changes in unhealthy food consumption among vulnerable elementary-aged children in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic: a serial cross-sectional analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies suggest that during the early pandemic, amidst socioeconomic instability, children from underserved families were more likely to resort to consuming cheaper, lower-quality foods with longer shelf lives. This study investigated the change in unhealthy food consumption across different phases (pre, early, mid) of the COVID-19 pandemic, and whether the strength of association between unhealthy food consumption and household socioeconomic disadvantage (HSED) varied across phases of the pandemic. METHODS: This study utilized serial cross-sectional data collected from low

DMDF-Net: Dual multiscale dilated fusion network for accurate segmentation of lesions related to COVID-19 in lung radiographic scans.

The recent disaster of COVID-19 has brought the whole world to the verge of devastation because of its highly transmissible nature. In this pandemic, radiographic imaging modalities, particularly, computed tomography (CT), have shown remarkable performance for the effective diagnosis of this virus. However, the diagnostic assessment of CT data is a human-dependent process that requires sufficient time by expert radiologists. Recent developments in artificial intelligence have substituted several personal diagnostic procedures with computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) methods that can make an effecti

Collective Critical Care Ambulance: an innovative transportation of critical care patients by bus in COVID-19 pandemic response.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, as the number of available Intensive Care beds in France did not meet the needs, it appeared necessary to transfer a large number of patients from the most affected areas to the less ones. Mass transportation resources were deemed necessary. To achieve that goal, the concept of a Collective Critical Care Ambulance (CCCA) was proposed in the form of a long-distance bus re-designed and equipped to accommodate up to six intensive care patients and allow Advanced Life Support (ALS) techniques to be performed while en route. METHODS: The expected benefit o

Mortality and hospitalization associated to emissions of a coal power plant: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Coal-fired thermal power plants represent a significant source of air pollutants, especially sulfur dioxide (SO2) that has been associated with an increased risk of mortality and morbidity for respiratory and cardiovascular disease. A coal power plant in Vado Ligure (Italy) (CPPVL) started in 1970 was stopped in 2014 by the Prosecutor's Office on the grounds of environmental and health culpable disaster. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between the exposure of residents to atmospheric pollutants emitted by CPPVL and the risk of mortality and hospitalization, considering b

DNA damage in nasal and brain tissues of canines exposed to air pollutants is associated with evidence of chronic brain inflammation and neurodegeneration.

Acute, subchronic, or chronic exposures to particulate matter (PM) and pollutant gases affect people in urban areas and those exposed to fires, disasters, and wars. Respiratory tract inflammation, production of mediators of inflammation capable of reaching the brain, systemic circulation of PM, and disruption of the nasal respiratory and olfactory barriers are likely in these populations. DNA damage is crucial in aging and in age-associated diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. We evaluated apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) sites in nasal and brain genomic DNA, and explored by immunohistochemistry th

Selective networks and recognition automata.

The results we have presented demonstrate that a network based on a selective principle can function in the absence of forced learning or an a priori program to give recognition, classification, generalization, and association. While Darwin II is not a model of any actual nervous system, it does set out to solve one of the same problems that evolution had to solve--the need to form categories in a bottom-up manner from information in the environment, without incorporating the assumptions of any particular observer. The key features of the model that make this possible are (1) Darwin II incorpo

Stressful exposure from the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami drives long-term changes in thyroid hormone physiology.

UNLABELLED: Stressful events are associated with long-term adverse health impacts, but the causal mechanisms linking these exposures to subsequent disease remain poorly understood. One plausible mechanism is persistent changes to hormonal signaling that regulate metabolic homeostasis. Here, we examine the long-term impacts of stress associated with exposure to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami on levels of free triiodothyronine (FT3), a circulating measure of biologically active thyroid hormone, using data from the Study of Tsunami Aftermath and Recovery. We measure biomarkers 20 years after the t

Oral absorption of semaglutide: pharmacokinetic modeling and molecular dynamics simulations.

This paper is an attempt to assess India's performance in generating the required quantity and quality of employment for its growing population since independence in 1947. But the exercise is set in a longer period that covers India's population growth since the turn of the twentieth century (1901) in relation to its ability to generate employment. The half-a-century preceding independence, despite a slow population growth, was a disaster in generating employment and any signs of structural change. Detailed analysis of the issue since independence shows that there was indeed a demographic burd
