BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in underdeveloped regions like sub-Saharan Africa, where environmental, housing, and socioeconomic factors drive its spread. This study aims to identify spatial patterns and key determinants of malaria infection among households across 19 sub-Saharan African countries to inform targeted interventions and policy strategies.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted using recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 19 sub-Saharan African countries, encompassing 126,424 households and 11

BACKGROUND: Using country-specific surveillance data to describe influenza epidemic activity could inform decisions on the timing of influenza vaccination. We analysed surveillance data from African countries to characterise the timing of seasonal influenza epidemics to inform national vaccination strategies.
METHODS: We used publicly available sentinel data from African countries reporting to the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response FluNet platform that had 3-10 years of data collected during 2010-19. We calculated a 3-week moving proportion of samples positive for influenza virus

INTRODUCTION: Institutional delivery is a major concern for a country's long-term growth. Rapid population development, analphabetism, big families, and a wider range of urban-rural health facilities have had a negative impact on institutional services in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries. The aim of this study was to look into the factors that influence women's decision to use an institutional delivery service in SSA.
METHODS: The most recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), which was conducted in nine countries (Senegal, Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Ghana, the D

OBJECTIVES: Tracking the progress of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 95-95-95 targets is essential for evaluating HIV programme performance and improving outcomes across all subpopulations, age groups and geographical settings. We conducted a systematic review and synthesis of the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets among adolescents and young adults (AYA) living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
DESIGN: The systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer kills 300 000 women annually, almost entirely in low-income and middle-income countries. Visual inspection of the cervix using acetic acid (VIA) remains a common method of screening but has suboptimal accuracy. Automated visual evaluation (AVE) is an internally validated artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool designed to assist health workers to improve VIA and to aid diagnostic accuracy. We aimed to measure sensitivity and specificity of AVE for detection of histology-confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 or greater (CIN2 +) in real-world clinical setting

Artemisinin partial resistance (ART-R), driven by mutations in the Plasmodium falciparum kelch13 (k13) gene, has contributed to malaria treatment failures in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs) of Bangladesh account for nearly 90% of national malaria cases. Although K13-mediated ART-R has not been reported in the CHTs, its emergence remains a concern due to the region's proximity to K13-mutation-endemic areas in Myanmar and India, and the presence of moderate K13-independent ART-R. A meta-analysis of global K13 mutation frequency identified C580Y, F446I, and R

Global developmental delay (GDD) is defined as a significant delay in two or more developmental domains: gross or fine motor, speech/language, cognitive, social/personal and activities of daily living. Many of these children will go on to be diagnosed with intellectual disability (ID), which is most commonly defined as having an IQ <75 in addition to impairment in adaptive functioning. Cytogenetic studies have been performed in 664 Rwandan pediatric patients presenting GDD/ID and/or multiple congenital abnormalities (MCA). Karyotype analysis was performed in all patients and revealed 260 chrom

BACKGROUND: Women in sub-Saharan Africa are vulnerable to acquiring HIV infection and reproductive tract infections. Bacterial vaginosis (BV), a disruption of the vaginal microbiota, has been shown to be strongly associated with HIV infection. Risk factors related to potentially protective or harmful microbiota species are not known.
METHODS: We present cross-sectional quantitative polymerase chain reaction data of the Lactobacillus genus, five Lactobacillus species, and three BV-related bacteria (Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, and Prevotella bivia) together with Escherichia coli a

A series of 100 Rwandese medicinal plants (267 plant extracts), used by traditional healers to treat infections, were screened for antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. The results of the testing showed that 45% were active against Staphylococcus aureus, 2% against Escherichia coli, 16% against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 7% against Candida albicans, 80% against Microsporum canis and 60% against Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Not less than 27% of the plant species exhibited prominent antiviral properties against one or more test viruses, more specifically 12% against poliomyelitis, 16%

BACKGROUND: Anemia and undernutrition are major public health concerns affecting child growth, development, and survival, particularly in low-resource settings like East Africa. These conditions often occur together and exacerbate the health and developmental challenges of young children. Despite their high prevalence, no research has explored their co-occurrence and the spatial variations across East African countries. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the spatial distribution and identify predictors of the co-existence of anemia and under-nutrition among children aged 6-59 months in East Af

BACKGROUND: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a neglected tropical disease that usually occurs in rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa. It caused devastating epidemics during the 20th century. Sustained, coordinated efforts by different stakeholders working with national sleeping sickness control programmes (NSSCPs) succeeded in controlling the disease and reducing the number of cases to historically low levels. In 2012, WHO targeted the elimination of the disease as a public health problem by 2020. This goal has been reached and a new ambitious target was stated in the WHO road map for NTDs

BACKGROUND: Despite significant global progress in reducing neonatal mortality, bacterial sepsis remains a major cause of neonatal deaths. Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is the leading pathogen globally underlying cases of neonatal sepsis and is frequently resistant to antibiotic treatment regimens recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), including first-line therapy with ampicillin and gentamicin, second-line therapy with amikacin and ceftazidime, and meropenem. Maternal vaccination to prevent neonatal infection could reduce the burden of K. pneumoniae neonatal sepsis in low

IMPORTANCE: Knowledge of HIV/AIDS among the younger population is crucial for long-term control. Little research has been done on which groups of young women (aged 15-24 years) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have been left behind with respect to obtaining this knowledge.
OBJECTIVE: To provide an up-to-date assessment of the levels of and changes in knowledge of HIV/AIDS and its associations with socioeconomic disparity among young women in LMICs.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys with avail

BACKGROUND: Near point-of-care (n)POC Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) viral load (VL) monitoring, consisting of VL testing in laboratories close to HIV treatment facilities, improves turnaround time from sampling to result. Other benefits of using nPOC monitoring are reduced laboratory workload, and limited loss of results, all leading to improved clinic retention and treatment adherence. However, the specific implementation bottlenecks are still unclear. This study aims to investigate the bottlenecks in the implementation of nPOC HIV VL monitoring among children and young people (ages 0-24

The major impediment to increased human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage in young males and females is lack of health care provider recommendation. Despite its efficacy in preventing cervical cancer, HPV vaccination in females (49.5%) and males (37.5%) ages 13 through 17 falls well below the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Healthy People 2020 target of 80% coverage. Parents' willingness to vaccinate their child has been shown to be much higher when physicians share personal vaccination decisions for their own children as well as what other parents have done at that

To compare phase contrast microscopy (PCM) of unstained slides for the detection of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts with a commercially available enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the detection of cryptosporidial antigen in human stool samples, we prospectively analysed by both methods 463 fresh human stool samples obtained from diarrhoeic patients between July and October 2014. Compared with the EIA, the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of PCM were 88.9 % (95 % confidence interval (CI), 66.0-98.1 %), 100 % (95 % CI, 99.0-100 %), 100 % (95 % CI, 77.3-100 %) and 99.6 % (

The flight of 500,000-800,000 Rwandan refugees into the North Kivu region of Zaire in July, 1994, overwhelmed the world's response capacity. During the first month after the influx, almost 50,000 refugees died, an average crude mortality rate of 20-35 per 10,000 per day. This death rate was associated with explosive epidemics of diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae 01 and Shigella dysenteriae type 1. 3-4 weeks after the influx of refugees, acute malnutrition rates among children under 5 years old ranged between 18 and 23%. Children with a recent history of dysentery and those in househ
