Quantification and Comparison of Risks Associated with Wastewater Use in Spray Irrigation.

In the U.S., spray irrigation is the most common method used in agriculture and supplementing with animal wastewater has the potential to reduce water demands. However, this could expose individuals to respiratory pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila and nontuberculosis Mycobacteria (NTM). Disinfection with methods like anaerobic digestion is an option but can increase concentrations of cytotoxic ammonia (personal communication). Our study aimed to model the annual risks of infection from these bacterial pathogens and the air concentrations of ammonia and determine if anaerobically digesti

Falcatimonas natans gen. nov., sp. nov., a strictly anaerobic, amino-acid-decomposing bacterium isolated from a methanogenic reactor of cattle waste.

A strictly anaerobic bacterial strain (WN011T) was isolated from a methanogenic reactor treating waste from cattle farms. Cells of the strain were Gram-stain-negative curved rods with a polar flagellum. Spores were not produced. The optimum temperature for growth was 35-37 °C and the optimum pH was 6.7. The strain did not utilize carbohydrates as growth substrates. The strain grew in PY medium and produced acetate, butyrate, isovalerate and H2 as well as propionate and isobutyrate as minor products. Amino acids (l-isoleucine, l-leucine, l-lysine, l-serine, l-threonine and l-valine) added to PY

Retrospective analysis of genetic diversity, clinical manifestations and risk factors, during outbreak of lumpy skin disease virus.

Lumpy skin is a highly host-specific, contagious, transboundary, notifiable disease affecting cattle (Bos taurus and Bos indicus) and water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), and also reported in some wild ruminants. The spread and reporting of Lumpy skin disease (LSD) in the past five years in disease-free countries, mainly in Pakistan, has highlighted the threat of its emergence and re-emergence in neighboring areas. Notably significant outbreaks of this disease have been reported in the neighboring countries of Pakistan during the last decades and are thought to be the reason for the first reported

Residue of Picloram in New Agricultural Areas: Impacts, Detection, and Mitigation Measures.

The expansion of grain production into former pasture areas in Brazil, one of the biggest grain producers' countries worldwide, has intensified concerns regarding the residual effects of auxinic herbicides historically used for broadleaf weed control. Among these, picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) stands out due to its high persistence and mobility in soil, posing a significant risk to sensitive rotational crops. This review discusses the implications of picloram use in pasture systems and its impact on the incorporation of these areas into soybean-based grain production systems

Bio-organic amendment enhances apple yield and nutritional quality in degraded sandy soils.

INTRODUCTION: 'Saiwaihong' apple (Malus pumila 'Saiwaihong') is a premium cultivar cultivated in the Horqin sandy land of Inner Mongolia, where soils are characterized by low organic matter content and poor nutrient retention capacity. Castor bean enzyme biofertilizer (CB), produced through microbial fermentation of castor meal, has shown promise in enhancing crop productivity, but its effects on fruit tree performance and underlying mechanisms remain inadequately characterized. METHODS: A two-year field experiment was conducted using 7-year-old 'Saiwaihong' apple trees in a randomized comple

Epidemiological characteristics and environmental surveillance of human psittacosis in Lishui City, Zhejiang Province, China (2021-2024).

INTRODUCTION: Psittacosis, caused by Chlamydia psittaci, is an underdiagnosed zoonosis that can lead to severe pneumonia and fatal outcomes. In China, traditional poultry farming poses substantial risks for avian-to-human transmission, yet comprehensive epidemiological evidence is scarce. To address this gap, we aimed to define the local epidemiology, risk factors, and environmental reservoirs of human psittacosis in Lishui City, Zhejiang Province. METHODS: We conducted a multi-source epidemiological study (2021-2024) integrating surveillance data, clinical records, contact investigations, an

The impact of beaver dams on distribution of waterborne Escherichia coli and turbidity in an agricultural landscape.

Globally, freshwater environments are threatened by point source and diffuse pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. Enhancing water quality and reducing microbial pollution are priorities to realise their ecosystem services potential but challenging to achieve and require creative solutions. Beavers are receiving increasing attention as ecosystem engineers, their dams benefitting aquatic ecosystems via improved biodiversity, water quality, and flow regulation. However, effects on microbial water quality remain uncertain. Here, we investigated the influence of engineering by Eurasian beav

Uncovering antimicrobial resistance in three agricultural biogas plants using plant-based substrates.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming an increasing global concern and the anaerobic digestion (AD) process represents a potential transmission route when digestates are used as fertilizing agents. AMR contaminants, e.g. antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and plasmid-mediated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been found in different substrates and AD systems, but not yet been investigated in plant-based substrates. AMR transfer from soils to vegetable microbiomes has been observed, and thus crop material potentially represents a so far neglected AMR load in agricultural AD processe

Prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistant and Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in Dairy Cattle Farms in East Tennessee.

Antimicrobials have been widely used in dairy farms to prevent and control dairy cattle diseases since 1960s. This led to the emergence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria (ARB) that, along with their antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), can spread from dairy farms to humans. Therefore, regular antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring is important to implement proper mitigation measures. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of AMR and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs)-producing Escherichia coli in dairy cattle. A cross-sectional study was conducted in four dai

Contrasting sources and fate of nitrogen compounds in different groundwater systems in the Central Yangtze River Basin.

Although groundwater nitrogen pollution has been widely studied, the control of hydrogeological conditions on behavior of nitrogen compounds has been poorly understood. In this study, multiple stable isotopes (N/C/H/O), spectral characteristics of DOM coupled with water chemistry were used to reveal the sources and fate of nitrate and ammonium in three subareas with different hydrogeological conditions in the Central Yangtze River Basin. We identified three contrasting patterns of nitrogen sources and fate in groundwater controlled by different aquifer features. In a reducing porous aquifer ma

Cantaloupe Facilitates Salmonella Typhimurium Survival Within and Transmission Among Adult House Flies (Musca domestica L.).

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a pathogen harbored by livestock and shed in their feces, which serves as an acquisition source for adult house flies. This study used a green fluorescent protein (GFP) expressing strain of Salmonella Typhimurium to assess its acquisition by and survival within house flies, and transmission from and between flies in the presence or absence of cantaloupe. Female house flies were exposed to manure inoculated with either sterile phosphate-buffered saline or GFP-Salmonella Typhimurium for 12 h, then used in four experiments each performed over 24 h. Wintertime factors affecting contaminant distribution in a swine farrowing room.

An estimated 200,000 to 500,000 U.S. workers in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are at risk of adverse respiratory outcomes from exposures to indoor contaminants. In the wintertime, general ventilation is minimized in the Midwest due to high heating costs required to maintain indoor temperatures optimal for animal production. Pit fans typically operate to exhaust under-floor manure pits, but little other fresh air intake exists. Many operators believe that these systems are sufficient to reduce contaminant concentrations within the building during winter. Investigating whether t
