Influence of sleep position experience on ability of prone-sleeping infants to escape from asphyxiating microenvironments by changing head position.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have found that back- or side-sleeping infants who are inexperienced in prone sleeping are at much higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) when they turn to prone or are placed prone for sleep compared with infants who normally sleep prone. Moreover, such inexperienced infants are more likely to be found in the face-down position at death after being placed prone compared with SIDS infants who are experienced in prone sleeping. We hypothesized that lack of experience in prone sleeping is associated with increased difficulty in changing head position to av

The Effects of Artificial vs. Natural Rearing on Growth Performance, Thyroid Hormone Levels, Locomotor Activity, Carcass Traits and Meat Quality Characteristics in Chios Lambs.

Artificial rearing (AR) of lambs is nowadays a common practice in Mediterranean dairy sheep production systems to enhance the milk available for cheese or yoghurt manufacturing. The sufficient growth of lambs in an AR system is vital for the economic success of dairy sheep farms. However, AR is often associated with negative impacts on the performance and physiology of lambs. Greece is one of the major producers of ovine milk; nevertheless, data concerning the effects of artificial rearing in lambs of Greek autochthonous breeds are not available. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine t

Interrater and Intrarater Reliability and Discriminant Validity of a Pediatric Lower Extremity Physical Therapy Clearance Test.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have validated when an athlete can safely return to sports, and even fewer have identified when he or she no longer requires physical therapy after surgery. Discontinuing physical therapy is often dictated by insurance restrictions, but most studies have suggested that the decision should be multifactorial, stemming from patient-derived subjective outcome questionnaires, clinical examination, and isokinetic and functional testing. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to establish discriminant validity and reliability of an objective physical therapy cleara

Regression of left ventricular hypertrophy with moexipril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, in hypertensive patients.

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common complication of essential hypertension and an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, antihypertensive treatment should decrease blood pressure (BP) and reverse LVH. However, antihypertensive drugs have been shown to have different effects on LVH despite similar effects on BP reduction. Although lowering BP produces a beneficial effect on LVH per se, meta-analyses of clinical trials have indicated that angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors decrease left ventricular mass (LVM) to a greater extent t

Swallowing dysfunction in infants less than 1 year of age.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) occurs frequently in infants and children and is implicated as a trigger for reactive airways disease. While evaluating patients for GER by upper gastrointestinal studies (UGI), we frequently noticed laryngeal penetration or tracheal aspiration in infants < 1 year of age. We conducted this prospective study to assess the incidence of swallowing dysfunction in infants with vomiting or respiratory symptoms. METHODS: Between February 1994 and August 1997, 1,003 UGI in infants < 1 year of age were performed by two experienced pediatric radiologists. Fluor

In vivo confocal imaging of corneal neovascularization.

PURPOSE: To investigate the cellular dynamics of vessel formation during corneal neovascularization in the living eye by confocal microscopy. METHODS: Corneal neovascularization was initiated by placing a 7-0 silk suture through the corneal stroma 3 mm from the limbus at the 12 o'clock position in both eyes of 10 New Zealand white rabbits. The corneas were examined for vessel ingrowth at intervals from 1 to 15 days after suture placement using a tandem scanning confocal microscope with a 20X water immersion objective, as well as a slit-lamp biomicroscope. Changes in the limbal vessels were re

Sarthran preserves cochlear microcirculation and reduces temporary threshold shifts after noise exposure.

The cause of noise-induced hearing loss remains unclear despite years of both epidemiologic and experimental investigation. Among the many possible pathophysiologic mechanisms that may contribute to noise-induced temporary or permanent threshold shifts are insufficiencies in cochlear blood flow. Although the literature is inconsistent, several histologic and physiologic studies demonstrate signs of reduced circulation in the cochlea after noise exposure. Recent studies using computer-enhanced intravital microscopy complement these earlier findings. Evidence suggests that these microcirculatory

Safety of beating heart anastomosis during video-assisted coronary surgery attested by cardiac troponin I.

Our objective was to evaluate the safety of coronary anastomosis on the beating heart by measuring the release of cardiac troponin I during minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting (MICABG). Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a reliable marker of cardiac ischemia during heart operations under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Ten patients (8 males and 2 females, aged 41-63) underwent MICABG with single vessel bypass grafting for left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) stenosis (n = 7) or occlusion (n = 3). Video-assisted surgery with left anterior minithoracotomy was performed in all pa

Par6alpha signaling controls glial-guided neuronal migration.

Neuronal migrations along glial fibers provide a primary pathway for the formation of cortical laminae. To examine the mechanisms underlying glial-guided migration, we analyzed the dynamics of cytoskeletal and signaling components in living neurons. Migration involves the coordinated two-stroke movement of a perinuclear tubulin 'cage' and the centrosome, with the centrosome moving forward before nuclear translocation. Overexpression of mPar6alpha disrupts the perinuclear tubulin cage, retargets PKCzeta and gamma-tubulin away from the centrosome, and inhibits centrosomal motion and neuronal mig

Opsoclonus-ataxia caused by childhood neuroblastoma: developmental and neurologic sequelae.

OBJECTIVE: Opsoclonus-ataxia, also called "dancing eye syndrome," is a serious neurologic condition that is often a paraneoplastic manifestation of occult neuroblastoma in early childhood. Despite resection of tumor and immunosuppressive therapy, outcome generally includes significant developmental and behavioral sequelae. There is controversy about how treatment alters outcome. The goals of this study were to understand the ongoing neurologic and developmental deficits of children who are treated for opsoclonus-ataxia with associated neuroblastoma; to relate treatment history to outcome; and

Group-based parent training programmes for improving emotional and behavioural adjustment in young children.

BACKGROUND: Emotional and behavioural problems in children are common. Research suggests that parenting has an important role to play in helping children to become well-adjusted, and that the first few months and years are especially important. Parenting programmes may have a role to play in improving the emotional and behavioural adjustment of infants and toddlers, and this review examined their effectiveness with parents and carers of young children. OBJECTIVES: 1. To establish whether group-based parenting programmes are effective in improving the emotional and behavioural adjustment of yo

An Integrated Process and Outcome Evaluation of a Web-Based Communication Tool for Patients With Malignant Lymphoma: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BackgroundThe complex nature of the medical dialogue and the often emotional context in cancer care present challenges to health care professionals (HCPs) and patients. Patients are increasingly expected to be informed participants and to be able to make conscious decisions, which they often find very difficult. In an attempt to support patients with malignant lymphoma in clinical communication, we developed a stand-alone, Web-based intervention called "PatientTIME." The development of PatientTIME was based on a participatory intervention mapping framework. Its primary aim is to boost patients
