A Nurse Case Management HIV Prevention Intervention (Come As You Are) for Youth Experiencing Homelessness: Protocol for a Randomized Wait-list Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Youth experiencing homelessness are more likely than housed youth to experience premature death, suicide, drug overdose, pregnancy, substance use, and mental illness. Yet while youth experiencing homelessness are 6 to 12 times more likely to become infected with HIV than housed youth, with HIV prevalence as high as 16%, many do not access the prevention services they need. Despite adversities, youth experiencing homelessness are interested in health promotion programs, can be recruited and retained in interventions and research studies, and demonstrate improved outcomes when progra

Robust Assessment of Free-Living Physical Behaviors and Activity Intensity Using Dual-Wearable Multitask Learning: Development and Evaluation Study From the Multicenter WEALTH Project.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of physical behaviors (PBs) and activity intensity is essential for public health research and digital health monitoring. Wearable accelerometers combined with machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL) enable objective behavior assessment, but most existing models are trained on laboratory data, limiting generalizability to free-living conditions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate multitask ML and DL models for PB classification across 7 categories (sitting, standing, walking, running, sports, cycling, and lying) and activity intensity categ

Theory-Based Social Media Intervention for Nonmedical Use of Prescription Opioids in Young Adults: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The nonmedical use of prescription opioids (NMUPO) in young adults in the United States is concerning and is robustly influenced by many psychosocial factors. Given the advantages of flexibility, wide coverage, and real-time responses and assessment, using social media appears to be a promising and innovative approach to delivering psychosocial intervention to young adults. However, few theory-based social media interventions are available for NMUPO targeting this at-risk population. OBJECTIVE: Guided by the information-motivation-behavioral skills model, the proposed research aim

Study Protocol Modeling Evoked Pain in Older African Americans With Knee Osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: African American (AA) older adults with knee osteoarthritis experience more severe chronic pain and advanced physical disability. One of the most prominent stimuli that provokes knee pain is movement. Research suggests that, compared to Whites, AAs report significantly higher movement-evoked pain (MEP) in the knee. However, little is known about the biopsychosocial-behavioral mechanisms underlying MEP. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to present a study protocol to (a) characterize the biopsychosocial-behavioral mechanisms that predict MEP in AAs with knee osteoarthritis and (

A Transferable Evaluation Framework for Mobile Health Data Collection in Shift-Work Nurses: Development and Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Shift-work nurses experience substantial variability in work schedules, health behaviors, and recovery patterns, which traditional retrospective surveys fail to capture due to recall bias. Although mobile health (mHealth) tools offer ecological momentary data capture, existing off-the-shelf survey platforms lack shift-synchronized notification logic and impose excessive cognitive friction on fatigued clinicians, limiting their applicability in nursing research. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to propose and demonstrate a transferable, dual-perspective evaluation framework for mHealth

Acoustic and Natural Language Markers for Bipolar Disorder: A Pilot, mHealth Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring symptoms of bipolar disorder (BD) is a challenge faced by mental health services. Speech patterns are crucial in assessing the current experiences, emotions, and thought patterns of people with BD. Natural language processing (NLP) and acoustic signal processing may support ongoing BD assessment within a mobile health (mHealth) framework. OBJECTIVE: Using both acoustic and NLP-based features from the speech of people with BD, we built an app-based tool and tested its feasibility and performance to remotely assess the individual clinical status. METHODS: We carried out

Study Protocol-Coping With the Pandemics: What Works Best to Reduce Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and lockdown might increase anxiety and depressive symptoms in most individuals. Health bodies recommend several coping behaviors to protect against such symptoms, but evidence on the relationship between these behaviors and symptoms mostly comes from cross-sectional studies in convenience samples. We will conduct a prospective longitudinal study of the associations between coping behaviors and subsequent anxiety and depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in a representative sample of the Spanish general adult population. Basel Long COVID Cohort Study (BALCoS): protocol of a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The recent pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 had a profound global impact. While many individuals recovered from COVID-19, some developed long-lasting symptoms that significantly disrupted daily life. The WHO defines this condition as post-COVID-19 condition (PCC). Common symptoms include fatigue, dyspnoea, sleep disturbances and cognitive difficulties. Increasing evidence suggests that PCC is a multifactorial condition, shaped not only by biomedical but also psychological and social factors. This article presents the protocol of the Basel Long COVID Cohort Study (BALCoS), which aims

Using Large Language Models to Detect Depression From User-Generated Diary Text Data as a Novel Approach in Digital Mental Health Screening: Instrument Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders have substantial global implications, leading to various social consequences, including decreased occupational productivity and a high disability burden. Early detection and intervention for clinically significant depression have gained attention; however, the existing depression screening tools, such as the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, have limitations in objectivity and accuracy. Therefore, researchers are identifying objective indicators of depression, including image analysis, blood biomarkers, and ecological momentary assessments (EMA

Post-concussion symptom burden and dynamics: Insights from a digital health intervention and machine learning.

Individuals who sustain a concussion can experience a range of symptoms which can significantly impact their quality of life and functional outcome. This study aims to understand the nature and recovery trajectories of post-concussion symptomatology by applying an unsupervised machine learning approach to data captured from a digital health intervention (HeadOn). As part of the 35-day program, patients complete a daily symptom diary which rates 8 post-concussion symptoms. Symptom data were analysed using K-means clustering to categorize patients based on their symptom profiles. During the stud

Telehealth-Plus-mHealth Intervention for Young Adults With Cannabis Use Disorder: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: More than 5 million young adults in the United States meet criteria for cannabis use disorder (CUD), placing them at risk for adverse physical, psychiatric, and social outcomes. Most individuals with CUD do not receive treatment due to numerous barriers, including motivation, stigma, limited availability and accessibility of developmentally appropriate services, and competing demands for time and finances. A novel digital health intervention, Momentary Self-Monitoring and Feedback + Motivational Enhancement Therapy-Virtual (MOMENT-V), was developed and combines telehealth motivatio

Event-level drinking motives and mood as predictors of alcohol-related consequences among young adults.

OBJECTIVE: People who drink heavily experience positive (e.g., made a new friend) and negative (e.g., embarrassed self) alcohol-related consequences. Important antecedents of alcohol-related consequences are drinking motives, particularly those related to affect regulation (coping, enhancement). Although prior research documents associations at the between-person level, little is known about how mood and motives at the start of a drinking event each relate within-person to positive and negative alcohol-related consequences. METHOD: Participants were U.S. young adults (N = 199; Mage = 22.10, S

Dynamic relationships among feeling fat, fear of weight gain, and eating disorder symptoms in an eating disorder sample.

Feeling fat and fear of weight gain are key cognitive-affective symptoms that are theorized to maintain eating disorders (EDs). Little research has examined the dynamic relationships among feeling fat, fear of weight gain, emotions, cognitions, and ED behaviors. Furthermore, it is unknown if these relations vary by ED diagnosis (e.g., anorexia nervosa (AN) vs other ED). The current study (N = 94 ED participants; AN n = 64) utilized ecological momentary assessments collected four times a day for 18 days (72 timepoints) asking about feeling fat, fear of weight gain, emotions (i.e., anxiety, guil

Intraindividual pain variability metrics for youth with sickle cell disease: Relations to health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While the majority of pediatric sickle cell disease (SCD) research has used mean pain intensity as the only pain metric, recent evidence suggests this metric alone is inadequate in describing the intraindividual variability in SCD pain experiences and subsequent impact. There is limited information on other intraindividual pain metrics in youth with SCD, or how they relate to health outcomes in this population. The aims of this study were to describe differing patterns of intraindividual pain metrics derived from ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) of youth with SCD and to char

The Role of Emotion Regulation, Affect, and Sleep in Individuals With Sleep Bruxism and Those Without: Protocol for a Remote Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep bruxism (SB) is an oral behavior characterized by high levels of repetitive jaw muscle activity during sleep, leading to teeth grinding and clenching, and may develop into a disorder. Despite its prevalence and negative outcomes on oral health and quality of life, there is currently no cure for SB. The etiology of SB remains poorly understood, but recent research suggests a potential role of negative emotions and maladaptive emotion regulation (ER). OBJECTIVE: This study's primary aim investigates whether ER is impaired in individuals with SB, while controlling for affective

Bridging the Digital Divide Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Men Who Have Sex With Men to Reduce Substance Use and HIV Risk: Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a promising data collection tool for mobile health interventions targeting episodic health behaviors. For substance-using men who have sex with men (SUMSM), EMA is becoming more widely utilized in efforts to characterize substance use and sexual risk factors for HIV transmission. However, recent literature demonstrates emerging concerns over compliance and lower EMA engagement and data concordance among racial and ethnic minority SUMSM. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide a qualitative evaluation of the barriers and facilitators of EMA a

A Novel Approach to Evaluating Mobile Smartphone Screen Time for iPhones: Feasibility and Preliminary Findings.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly high levels of smartphone ownership and use pose the potential risk for addictive behaviors and negative health outcomes, particularly among younger populations. Previous methodologies to understand mobile screen time have relied on self-report surveys or ecological momentary assessments (EMAs). Self-report is subject to bias and unreliability, while EMA can be burdensome to participants. Thus, a new methodology is needed to advance the understanding of mobile screen time. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test the feasibility of a novel methodology to rec

Circadian, Reward, and Emotion Systems in Teens prospective longitudinal study: protocol overview of an integrative reward-circadian rhythm model of first onset of bipolar spectrum disorder in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) are associated with a heightened sensitivity to rewards and elevated reward-related brain function in cortico-striatal circuitry. A separate literature documents social and circadian rhythm disruption in BSDs. Recently, integrated reward-circadian models of BSDs have been proposed. These models draw on work indicating that the two systems influence each other and interact to affect mood functioning. When dysregulated, reward and circadian system signaling may combine to form a positive feedback loop, whereby dysregulation in one system exacerbates
