Occurrence, antimicrobial resistance and genomic features of Klebsiella pneumoniae from broiler chicken in Faisalabad, Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: The dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in critical priority pathogens is a significant threat. Non-clinical reservoirs of AMR, such as agriculture and food production facilities, may contribute to the transmission of clinically relevant pathogens such as multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae. There is currently very limited knowledge regarding the population structure and genomic diversity of K. pneumoniae in poultry production in Pakistan. METHODS: We explored healthy broilers in a commercial farm from Faisalabad, Pakistan, and identified six K. pneumonia

Aminopenicillins vs non-aminopenicillins for treatment of enterococcal lower urinary tract infections.

Aminopenicillins (APs) achieve urinary concentrations that exceed typical minimum inhibitory concentrations for enterococcal lower urinary tract infection (UTI). The local clinical microbiology laboratory discontinued routine susceptibilities on enterococcal urine isolates, and reports that 'APs are predictably reliable for uncomplicated enterococcal UTI'. The objective of this study was to compare outcomes of APs with non-APs (NAPs) for enterococcal lower UTIs. This was an institutional-review-board-approved, retrospective cohort of adults hospitalized with symptomatic enterococcal lower UTIs

Rising Resistance In Uropathogens With An Indication Of Nitrofurantoin Mic Creep.

BACKGROUND: The irrational use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of multi drug resistant pathogens. The phenomenon of MIC creeps occurs when organisms start showing raised MIC but within susceptible range giving an indication of the prevalence of rise in resistant pathogens in an area. METHODS: A cross sectional study in a large tertiary care hospital in North India to observe the susceptibility pattern among uropathogens and the possibility of MIC creeps. The Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) were conducted by Vitek Compact 2. The ide

Molecular epidemiology of enterically colonizing Escherichia coli with resistance against third-generation cephalosporins isolated from stool samples of European soldiers with concomitant diarrhea on deployment in Western African Mali.

Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) are frequently found in Enterobacterales isolates from Western Africa. However, information on the molecular epidemiology of regional ESBL-positive Enterobacterales strains is scarce. In order to provide epidemiological information, ESBL-positive Escherichia coli isolates from stool samples of European soldiers with diarrhea deployed to a field camp in Mali were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (Illumina MiSeq and Oxford Nanopore MinION) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. With two exemptions, sequence-based analysis suggested an absence of tr

Retrospective surveillance of viable Bacillus cereus group contaminations in commercial food and feed vitamin B2 products sold on the Belgian market using whole-genome sequencing.

Bacillus cereus is a spore-forming bacterium that occurs as a contaminant in food and feed, occasionally resulting in food poisoning through the production of various toxins. In this study, we retrospectively characterized viable B. cereus sensu lato (s.l.) isolates originating from commercial vitamin B2 feed and food additives collected between 2016 and 2022 by the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain from products sold on the Belgian market. In total, 75 collected product samples were cultured on a general medium and, in case of bacterial growth, two isolates per product s

Phenotypic Detection of Carbapenemase and AmpC-β-Lactamase Production among Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase (ESBL)-Producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. Isolated from Clinical Specimens.

Introduction: Data on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are sparse across numerous African countries, as microbiological analyses are not routinely conducted and surveillance data are not collected. Accordingly, clinical samples are not routinely tested for carbapenem-resistant bacteria and, therefore, the general understanding of their prevalence in the region remains limited. Methods: Between January 2020 and June 2022, we collected extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-PE) isolates from five hospitals in Burkina Faso. After an initial culture on ESBL-selective m

Prevalence and whole genome phylogenetic analysis reveal genetic relatedness between antibiotic resistance Salmonella in hatchlings and older chickens from farms in Nigeria.

The presence of Salmonella in hatchlings is the single most important risk factor for the introduction of Salmonella into poultry farms, and resistant strains are particularly worrisome, as they could affect treatment outcomes in humans infected through consumption of contaminated poultry products. This study estimated Salmonella prevalence, determined resistance profiles of strains recovered from hatchlings in Nigeria, and determined genetic relatedness between hatchling strains and strains from poultry farms. In this study, 300 fecal samples were collected. Salmonella was isolated by culture

Antibiotic heteroresistance in ESKAPE pathogens, from bench to bedside.

BACKGROUND: Heteroresistance refers to subpopulation-mediated differential antimicrobial susceptibility within a clonal bacterial population. Usually, it designates a resistant subpopulation identified within an isolate considered susceptible by classical antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Heteroresistance lacks a uniform microbiological definition for diagnostic laboratories, and its clinical impact remains unclear for most bacterial species. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review aims to provide a practical overview on the latest developments in the field of heteroresistance for both clinical

Pathotypes and Drug Susceptibility of Escherichia coli Isolated from Companion Dogs in Japan.

Considering the possibility that Escherichia coli carried by companion dogs could infect owners and human society, we investigated their pathogenicity and drug resistance. E. coli was isolated from stool samples of companion dogs (n = 90) to examine the O-serogroup, virulence genes, and drug susceptibility. The age of dogs ranged from 4 months to 16 years, and they were mainly treated with cefalexin, enrofloxacin, or amoxicillin. A total of 69 samples were positive for E. coli (76% of examined dogs), and the most common O-serogroup was O18 (n = 13). Nine diarrheagenic E. coli, including entero

Systematic research to overcome newly emerged multidrug-resistant bacteria.

In the 1980s, I found that the chromosomal β-lactamase of Klebsiella pneumoniae LEN-1 showed a very high similarity to the R-plasmid-mediated penicillinase TEM-1 on the amino acid sequence level, and this strongly suggested the origination of TEM-1 from the chromosomal penicillinases of K. pneumoniae or related bacteria. Moreover, the chromosomal K1 β-lactamase (KOXY) of Klebsiella oxytoca was found to belong to the class A β-lactamases that include LEN-1 and TEM-1, although KOXY can hydrolyze cefoperazone (CPZ) like the chromosomal AmpC-type cephalosporinases of various Enterobacteriaceae tha

Tracking the environmental dissemination of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae using whole genome sequencing.

The emergence and dissemination of infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) are of great concern worldwide, as there are limited options for their treatment. Thus, in this study, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was applied to assess CRKP distribution and dissemination from hospital settings to the aquatic environment in order to identify the extent of the problem. Samples were collected from hospital wastewaters and receiving water bodies. Susceptible K. pneumoniae and CRKP were enumerated and isolated using standard methods. Seventeen CRKP were DNA-sequenced using
