A scoping review of research to address older women's health during and after incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Older women with criminal legal system involvement (CLSI) are women who are currently or formerly incarcerated or under supervised probation. Older women (age >50) make up about 18% of jail or prison incarcerated females, about 20,000 individuals, and many more in community supervision. Older women with CLSI face disproportionate aging-related health challenges as a result of social determinants and life circumstances that wear away at health over the long term. Research on health in this group is rare, and even rarer for women after incarceration, potentially hindering the develop

War on Drugs in the Philippines: Evaluating Fear Appeals as Antidote to Continued Drug Use.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of fear-based strategies on the decisions of Filipino drug users to surrender to authorities under the Philippine government's anti-drug policy. It also examined the influence of these scare tactics on the discontinuance of drug use among drug surrenderers. The fear appeals included community shaming and threats of imprisonment, torture or death under Oplan Tokhang launched by the Philippine government in 2016. METHODS: A combination of survey questionnaires and in-depth interviews was conducted with 56 surrenderers from selected commun

Transcatheter Covered Stent Exclusion of Superior Sinus Venosus Defects.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter correction of sinus venosus defects (SVDs) using balloon-mounted covered stents provides an attractive surgical alternative. Surgery may be complicated by superior vena caval or right upper pulmonary vein (RUPV) stenosis, sinus nodal dysfunction, and residual additional pulmonary veins. OBJECTIVES: Being a new intervention, technical modifications would simplify the procedure, improve universal applicability, and reduce or tackle complications. METHODS: Patients were included if balloon interrogation of cavoatrial junction confirmed closure of SVD and redirected RUP

Incarcerated workers: overlooked as essential workers.

OBJECTIVE: To use the example of COVID-19 vaccine prioritization for incarcerated workers to call attention to the need to prioritize incarcerated workers' health. METHODS: From November to December 2020, we searched publicly available information (e.g. Department Of Corrections websites and press releases) for 53 US prison systems, including all states, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and Puerto Rico. Coders reviewed if states had prison labor policies, if states had COVID-19 specific prison labor policies, the location of work, industries both pre- and du

COVID-19 vaccine prioritization of incarcerated people relative to other vulnerable groups: An analysis of state plans.

BACKGROUND: Carceral facilities are epicenters of the COVID-19 pandemic, placing incarcerated people at an elevated risk of COVID-19 infection. Due to the initial limited availability of COVID-19 vaccines in the United States, all states have developed allocation plans that outline a phased distribution. This study uses document analysis to compare the relative prioritization of incarcerated people, correctional staff, and other groups at increased risk of COVID-19 infection and morbidity. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a document analysis of the vaccine dissemination plans of all 50 US s

"I have more support around me to be able to change": A Qualitative Exploration of Probationers' and Parolees' Experiences Living in Sober Living Houses.

Persons in the U.S. who are incarcerated for drug offenses are increasingly being released into the community as a way to decrease prison and jail overcrowding. One challenge is finding housing that supports compliance with probation and parole requirements, which often includes abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Sober living houses (SLHs) are alcohol- and drug-free living environments that are increasingly being used as housing options for probationers and parolees. Although a few studies have reported favorable outcomes for residents of SLHs, little is known about resident experiences or the

Medicine in the Penal System.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases, substance dependencies, and dental diseases are the most important health problems affecting incarcerated persons. In Germany, for example, prisoners are 48 to 69 times more likely to be infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) than the general population, and 7 to 12 times more likely to be infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The prevalence of mental illnesses is also markedly higher in the incarcerated than in the general population. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent publications retrieved by a selective search in two databases (P

Motivational interviewing with computer assistance as an intervention to empower women to make contraceptive choices while incarcerated: study protocol for randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are important and costly public health problems in the United States resulting from unprotected sexual intercourse. Risk factors for unplanned pregnancies and STIs (poverty, low educational attainment, homelessness, substance abuse, lack of health insurance, history of an abusive environment, and practice of commercial sex work) are especially high among women with a history of incarceration. Project CARE (Contraceptive Awareness and Reproductive Education) is designed to evaluate an innovative intervention, motivatio

Comparison of a new ESAT-6/CFP-10 peptide-based gamma interferon assay and a tuberculin skin test for tuberculosis screening in a moderate-risk population.

Screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) with Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST) has many limitations, including false-positive results due to exposure to Mycobacterium other than tuberculosis (TB) and BCG vaccination. A total of 474 adult inmates in a county jail were screened for LTBI using TST and a new ESAT-6/CFP-10 peptide-based whole-blood gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) assay. LTBI prevalence was 9.0 and 5.4% as determined by TST and IFN-gamma assay, respectively. Overall, agreement between test results was 90% (kappa = 0.25). Positive TST results were significantly associated wi

Barriers to Discharge for Nursing Home Residents With Serious Mental Illness.

IMPORTANCE: Nursing homes deliver rehabilitative and long-term care for people with serious medical illnesses, functional impairment, and/or cognitive impairment. The population of nursing home residents with serious mental illness (ie, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders) has grown substantially. Other than prisons and jails, nursing homes are the largest institutional care setting for adults (aged ≥18 years) with serious mental illness. Nursing home residents with serious mental illness become long-term residents despite less functional impairment, which may be a funct

Decarceration of older adults with mental illness in the USA - beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: Aging and mental illness both represent significant public health challenges for incarcerated people in the USA. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the vulnerabilities of incarcerated people because of the risks of infectious disease transmission in correctional facilities. Focusing on older adults with mental illness, this paper aims to examine efforts to decarcerate US correctional facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether these approaches may lead to sustainable reforms beyond the pandemic. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A narrative literature review was conduct

Provision of Air Conditioning and Heat-Related Mortality in Texas Prisons.

IMPORTANCE: There is a large body of epidemiologic evidence that heat is associated with increased risk of mortality. One of the most effective strategies to mitigate the effects of heat is through air conditioning (AC); Texas regulates the internal temperature of jails to stay between 65 and 85 °F degrees, but these same standards do not apply to state and private prisons. OBJECTIVE: To analyze whether heat during warm months is associated with an increased risk of mortality in Texas prisons without AC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-crossover study included individuals who di
