[The facial artery-buccinator musculo-mucosal flap for reconstruction of the palate].

Since may 1999, 5 facial artery musculo-mucosal (FAMM) flaps have been used for mucosal reconstruction of the top of the mouth. The FAMM flap, first described by Pribaz in 1993 is a modification of the naso-labial cutaneous flap. The flap can be inferiorly based on the facial vessels (orthograde flow) or superiorly based (retrograde flow). It can easily reconstruct palate, alveolus and soft palate defects. The are of rotation has its pivot point inferiorly at the retromolar trigone, superiorly at the gingival labial sulcus. The FAMM flap has been used for 2 palatal fistula after facial blast i

Simultaneous Orthognathic Surgery and Condylectomy for Active Unilateral Condylar Hyperplasia: Indications and Outcomes of a Single-Stage Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Active unilateral condylar hyperplasia (AUCH) leads to progressive facial asymmetry and occlusal imbalance and may coexist with preexisting skeletal discrepancies. In such cases, a single-stage approach combining condylectomy and orthognathic surgery can address both pathological growth and the associated dentofacial deformity. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to present a treatment protocol and surgical algorithm for simultaneous orthognathic surgery and condylectomy in subjects with AUCH and to evaluate clinical outcomes in a retrospective case series. Chairside Tomosynthesis for Intraoperative Imaging in Implant Dentistry: Clinical Applications and Workflow Considerations.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become an important component of implant dentistry by providing three-dimensional visualization for diagnosis and treatment planning. However, once implant surgery begins, obtaining additional three-dimensional imaging may require interruption of the procedure and transportation of the patient to a dedicated imaging system. Chairside tomosynthesis offers an alternative approach by providing focused sectional imaging directly within the operatory. This article describes the principles, clinical applications, and workflow considerations of chairside tomos

Long-Term Stability and Safety of Orthognathic-Orthodontic Correction for Skeletal Anterior Open Bite: A Systematic Review and Evidence Appraisal.

This systematic review evaluated the long-term stability and complication profile of combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment for managing skeletal anterior open-bite (AOB) in adolescents and adults. An electronic search of PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar identified English-language clinical studies (published from January 2004 to September 2025) that included at least one group treated with combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical correction. Nonsurgical comparators such as skeletal-anchorage-based intrusion or orthodontic camouflage were also included w

Adjustable selective maxillary expansion combined with one-stage maxillomandibular surgery: A prospective study of osseous widening in fifty-five consecutive patients.

OBJECTIVE: SARME is often considered to be the only available treatment for significant or severe maxillary transverse palatal deficiencies (MTD) in skeletally-mature patients. Despite this observation, the aim of our study was to assess a new type of maxilla distraction osteogenesis. Using two innovative tools, we performed selective expansion: the site to be widened and the amount of increase were both pre-selected. Patients were treated in a single maxillomandibular procedure. Our study focuses primarily on the extent of osseous widening. STUDY DESIGN: Post-expansion computed tomography da

Surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion in class III malocclusion: Our experience.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary transverse deficiency (MTD) is a common facial disharmony that may need surgical assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE). The aim of this study was to present our SARPE technique and to report about our experience. MATERIEL AND METHOD: Medical records of all class III patients who underwent SARPE in our department from 2010 to 2015 and for whom a follow-up of at least 1year was available, were included in a retrospective study. The technique consisted, after short orthodontic preparation allowing for divergence of the upper central incisors, in a complete Le Fort I os

Circumcaval Ureter-the Paradigm Shift in Diagnosis and Management.

INTRODUCTION: Correction of a severe anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy, as described in this case of extreme skeletal class III malocclusion, can be quite challenging and fraught with difficulties. Conventional, single-stage bi-jaw orthognathic surgery with pre-and post-surgical orthodontics is associated with drawbacks such as the risk of relapse and an unsatisfactory overall long-term outcome, with persisting occlusal discrepancies and skeletal abnormalities, especially when the magnitude of skeletal correction required is large. Excessive mandibular setback can restrict tongue space, cau

Lateral and crestal bone planing antrostomy: a simplified surgical procedure to reduce the incidence of membrane perforation during maxillary sinus augmentation procedures.

This clinical report presents a simplified surgical procedure for accessing the maxillary sinus antrum via lateral and crestal approaches, which reduces the potential for sinus membrane perforation and subsequent complications when graft materials and dental implants are placed into the sinus. Due to visual limitations, perforations and associated complications can jeopardize the success rate of the graft and the implants. While there is a lack of clinical data, clinical observations suggest that the procedure, described by the authors as lateral/crestal bone planing antrostomy, can reduce the

The effect of piezoelectric use on open sinus lift perforation: a retrospective evaluation of 56 consecutively treated cases from private practices.

BACKGROUND: The lateral window approach to maxillary sinus augmentation is a well-accepted treatment option in implant dentistry. The most frequent complication reported with traditional techniques has been the perforation of the Schneiderian membrane, with perforation rates ranging from 11% to 56%. The purpose of this retrospective, consecutive case series from two private practices was to report on the rate of Schneiderian membrane perforations and arterial lacerations when a piezoelectric surgical unit was used in conjunction with hand instrumentation to perform lateral window sinus elevati

[Sinus floor bone augmentation: implementation of the concept of sinus-lift].

Sinus floor elevation is a technique allowing implant placement in the posterior edentulous maxilla when residual bone height is limited. This technique has evolved a lot since it has been first introduced in the eighties. Nowadays, this approach is considered as predictable, simple and practicable under local anaesthesia. The present article aims at understanding clearly the biological phenomenon of "sinus-lift". Moreover, the surgical protocol used at the University of Liège is considered didactically and reasoned according to the scientific literature.
