While the gross dental anatomy of the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) has been described, the radiographic appearance of the dentition and the prevalence of dental and oral pathology have not been comprehensively evaluated. The objective of this study was to characterize the intraoral radiographic dental anatomy of the Virginia opossum and to determine the prevalence and distribution of anatomic variations and pathologic conditions affecting the dentition. Oral examination, standardized photography, and full-mouth intraoral dental radiography were performed on 25 deceased free-ranging

Turner Syndrome (TS) is a rare genetic disorder that affects females when one of the X chromosomes is partially or completely missing. Due to high genetic and phenotypic variability, TS diagnosis is challenging and is often delayed until adolescence, resulting in poor clinical management. Numerous oral, dental and craniofacial anomalies have been associated with TS, yet a comprehensive description is still lacking. This study addresses this gap through a detailed analysis of oral health and craniofacial characteristics in a cohort of 15 females with TS and their first-degree relatives. Subject

BACKGROUND: Impacted teeth have a low prevalence but exhibit a very uneven distribution. Among dental visits, impaction is one of the most common issues encountered. The causes of impaction can can vary from person to person, including factors such as a lack of calcium, retained deciduous tooth, or the presence of supernumerary teeth that interfere with the normal eruption pattern. The presence of impacted teeth can hinder the progress of orthodontic treatment. Therefore, understanding the prevalence of impacted teeth is crucial for effective treatment planning. This study aims to examine the

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of the dental phenotype in patients with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) using longitudinal data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve unrelated Korean CCD patients were observed using a longitudinal series of radiographs and clinical photographs. Statistical analysis was performed on the dental phenotypic data.
RESULTS: Although dysplasia of the clavicles, open fontanelle, and wormian bone were observed in all 12 patients, delayed fusion of the mandibular symphysis was found in four patients. One patient did not have a supernumerary tooth (ST). However,

INTRODUCTION: Cleidocranial Dysplasia (CCD) is a rare inherited autosomal dominant congenital syndrome that occurs in approximately one out of every one million individuals worldwide; it primarily affects bones that undergo intra-membranous ossification, generally the skull and clavicles. Other bones may be affected such as the long bones, spine, pelvis, bones of hands and feet showing hypoplasia of distal phalanges. Indispensable is the role of the gene Runx2, necessary for the differentiation of odontoblasts and osteoblasts; it regulates the expression of many genes related to the developmen

Dental malformations relating to bigeminism, fused teeth, etc., have a prevalence of 0.5-5%, depending on geographic, racial or genetic factors. This in turn may influence the treatment to be provided in each case. Anomalies in the shape, size and number of teeth are more common in the so-called pediatric genetic syndromes, many of which are associated to mental retardation. The present study describes two clinical cases of similar dental fusion involving a central incisor and comprising different and individualized treatment plans due to the important differences in the characteristics of eac

The presence of a perivascular neural plexus in the periodontal membrane suggests that the dental structures have both sensory and autonomic nerve supply. The fibres described by Mummery are unaffected by section of the inferior dental nerve although there is marked degeneration in all demonstrable nerves. Nerve-fibres have been observed describing simple and complex looping in the odontogenetic zone and others which, running tangentially between the odontoblast layer and the dentine, form a very definite nerve plexus. Attached to these nerve-fibres are numerous round or pear-shaped bodies whi

When determining the dental health of the population, radiographic findings cannot be omitted. Nor should large groups of people be left out as this affects the results significantly.

Supernumerary teeth are an infrequent developmental anomaly that can appear in any area of the dental arch and can affect any dental organ. Multiple supernumerary teeth, or hyperdontia, is rare in people with no other associated diseases or syndromes. Conditions commonly associated with hyperdontia include cleft lip and palate, trichorhinophalangeal syndrome, cleidocranial dysplasia, and Gardner's syndrome. A black girl, aged 11 years 8 months, came for consultation; radiographs showed 81 teeth: 18 deciduous, 32 permanent, and 31 supernumerary. The main concern initially was to determine wheth

BACKGROUND: Supernumerary teeth are an alteration of dental developmental and result in the formation of teeth above the usual number. Epidemiologic studies suggested that patients with dentofacial anomalies and their family members may present an increased risk of developing cancer, including female breast cancer and gynecologic cancers. These observations indicate that genetic alterations that result in dental anomalies may be related to cancer development. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between supernumerary teeth and a family history of female breast can

AIMS: To perform minimally invasive and preventive treatment in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) with hyperdontia in the upper jaw.
BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic disease of the connective tissue that is characterized by manifestations in cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, ophthalmological, and oral structures. The diagnosis of this disease is based on clinical and genetic criteria called the Ghent criteria. Within the oral manifestations, hyperdontia may occur, which corresponds to a numerical variation in the number of normal teeth; it can occur in a single or

The most recent A.F.I.P. fascicle defines primordial odontogenic cyst (POC) as a distinct, nonkeratinized, odontogenic cyst of "undetermined origin" forming in the place of a developing normal or supernumerary tooth. However, the majority of examples reported in the literature under this term represent odontogenic keratocysts (keratocystic odontogenic tumors). In addition, there are rare reported cases of cystic odontomas. An 18-year-old Caucasian male presented with a unilocular mandibular radiolucent lesion in the place of a congenitally missing molar. Histologically, it featured nonkeratini

Coatis (Nasua nasua, Linnaeus, 1766), omnivorous mammals of the family Procyonidae of the order Carnivora, are ubiquitous in South America. Their diet varies seasonally, with a greater intake of invertebrates and small vertebrates during fruit-scarce periods. This study aimed to evaluate dental wear and dental formula variations in free-ranging coatis from Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil, using the modified Triadan system. Coatis typically have 40-42 teeth, with a dental formula of 2 × (3/3 incisors, 1/1 canines, 4/4 premolars, 2/2-3 molars). They exhibit heterodont, brachydont, and anisognathic d
