A series of caracasine acid (1) derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity on human cancer-derived cell lines MCF-7 and PC-3, as well as for other activities such as antibacterial, antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activity. Compound 1 was more effective than any of its derivatives against tested human cancer cell lines. PC-3 cells were more sensitive than MCF-7 to all compounds, particularly the methyl ester (2), the amide (9) and the epoxide (10). The evaluation of antiparasitic activity revealed that ester derivatives (2-8) and the amide derivative (9) wer

BACKGROUND: The world society is still suffering greatly from waterborne infections, with developing countries bearing most of the morbidity and death burden, especially concerning young children. Moreover, microbial resistance is one of the most prevalent global problems that extends the need for self-medication and the healing period, or it may be linked to treatment failure that results in further hospitalization, higher healthcare expenses, and higher mortality rates. Thus, innovative synthesis of new antimicrobial materials is required to preserve the environment and enhance human health.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant global health threat in the 21st century. The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has further emphasized the need for novel and effective alternative therapeutics, especially from natural sources. Despite the known bioactivity of citronella oil, its potential as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antiviral agent remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral potential of commercially produced citronella oil using in vitro and in silico approaches.
METHODS: The chemical constituent

The Streptococcus milleri group (SMG), comprising Streptococcus intermedius, anginosus, and constellatus, can asymptomatically colonize various mucosal sites of healthy individuals. These bacteria are opportunistic pathogens that cause different types of infections across various anatomical sites. Although the pathogenic mechanisms leading to infections are not well defined in the SMG, auto-aggregation is a key driver of biofilm adhesion and cohesion in many Streptococci and Staphylococci. Here, we identify a S. intermedius gene cluster with significant homology to the Bacillus cereus and Pseu

Due to reclaimed water, irrigation can cause human health and environmental risks. Soil amendments are applied to reveal the abundance of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes in rhizosphere soil irrigated by reclaimed water and to better understand the effects of environmental factors on the rhizosphere soil bacterial composition, which has guiding significance for the reasonable use of soil amendments. In this study, the effects of biochar, bioorganic fertilizer, humic acid, loosening soil essence, and corn vinasse on bacterial community diversity and certain gene abundances in rhizosphe

Data on foodborne disease in Canada in 1982 are compared with those for 1981. A total of 988 incidents comprising 791 outbreaks and 197 single cases, caused illnesses in 7,384 persons in 1982. These figures are greater than for 1981, and, in fact, the numbers of incidents and cases are the highest on record. Salmonella , Staphylococcus aureus , Clostridium perfringens and Bacillus cereus caused most of the illnesses. The main Salmonella serovars were S. typhimurium , S. muenster and S. infantis . Escherichia coli 0157:H7 hemorrhagic colitis was reported for the first time. Parasitic diseases w

Essential oil nanoemulsions have received much attention due to their biological activities. Thus, a thyme essential oil nanoemulsion (Th-nanoemulsion) was prepared using a safe and eco-friendly method. DLS and TEM were used to characterize the prepared Th-nanoemulsion. Our findings showed that the nanoemulsion was spherical and ranged in size from 20 to 55.2 nm. The micro-broth dilution experiment was used to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of a Th-emulsion and the Th-nanoemulsion. The MIC50 values of the thymol nanoemulsion were 62.5 mg/mL against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella

Antibiotic resistance in diarrhea-causing bacteria and its disruption of gut microbiota composition are health problems worldwide. The development of combinatory agents that increase the selective inhibitory effect (synergism) against diarrheagenic pathogens and, simultaneously, have a lowered impact (antagonism) or no negative action on the gut microbiota is therefore proposed as a new strategy efficient for chemotherapy against diarrheal conditions. In this study, the in vitro selective combinatory effect of ciprofloxacin with nitroxoline, sanguinarine, and zinc pyrithione, representing vari

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Goat is one of the major livestock species, plays an important role in the economy of Bangladesh. However, the outbreak of different infectious diseases in goats causes high mortality and economic losses due to lack of proper diagnosis and treatment. Conventional culture-based methods for detecting specific pathogens as confirmatory diagnosis are laborious as well as time-consuming in comparison to multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR), by which multiple pathogens can be detected at a time. The present study was aimed to perform faster molecular identification of bacte

Based on genomic analysis, polyketide synthase (PKS) and nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) pathways account for biosynthesis of the majority of the secondary metabolites produced by the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii. To evaluate the contribution of these pathways to M. robertsii fitness and/or virulence, mutants deleted for mrpptA, the Sfp-type 4' phosphopantetheinyl transferase gene required for their activation were generated. ΔmrpptA strains were deficient in PKS and NRPS activity resulting in colonies that lacked the typical green pigment and failed to produce the nonr

The identification and sequencing of novel cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMPs) have proven challenging due to the limitations associated with traditional proteomics methods and difficulties sequencing peptides present in complex biomolecular mixtures. We present here a process for large-scale identification and de novo-assisted sequencing of newly discovered CAMPs using microparticle capture followed by tandem mass spectrometry equipped with electron-transfer dissociation (ETD). This process was initially evaluated and verified using known CAMPs with varying physicochemical properties. The

The in-vitro qualities of ceftazidime, as compared to other beta-lactams and three other antimicrobials (amikacin, gentamicin and chloramphenicol), were evaluated in a multilaboratory, multiphasic study in the United States. A total of 12,986 recent clinical isolates were tested by reference dilution methods in six medical centres over 45-60 days. Ceftazidime was superior to the comparison cephalosporin (cefamandole) and comparable in spectrum and activity to gentamicin against Enterobacteriaceae. Of 8038 enteric bacilli tested, over 98% had CTAZ MICs < or = 8 mg/l with a mode of < or = 0.12 m

Bovine colostrum provides newborn calves with strong passive immunity, which will further affect the immunity of their offspring. Compared with other commercial dairy products, bovine colostrum emphasizes the limit of aflatoxin M1, pathogenic bacteria, microorganisms, antibiotics, stimulants, and other items, so it is safe to use. There are many reports that the use of bovine colostrum as a breast milk fortifier for preterm infants provides necessary immune support for premature infants, but the selection of bovine colostrum products chosen must be free of Bacillus cereus because they are very

A comparative analysis of the placental microbiome in pregnancies with late fetal growth restriction (FGR) was performed with normal pregnancies to assess the impact of bacteria on placental development and function. The presence of microorganisms in the placenta, amniotic fluid, fetal membranes and umbilical cord blood throughout pregnancy disproves the theory of the "sterile uterus". FGR occurs when the fetus is unable to follow a biophysically determined growth path. Bacterial infections have been linked to maternal overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as various short- and
