Factors influencing heartworm, flea, and tick preventative use in patients presenting to a veterinary teaching hospital.

The introduction of modern heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives has provided a safe and effective means of controlling companion animal endoparasites, but achieving good owner compliance remains an ongoing challenge for the veterinary profession. Based on a sample of patients from the veterinary teaching hospital at the University of Pennsylvania, this study retrospectively examined factors associated with preventative use and areas of potential weakness in client communication. Between 1999 and 2006, records of 5276 canine and 1226 feline patients were searched for signalment, survey resul

SENTINEL COYOTE PATHOGEN SURVEY TO ASSESS DECLINING BLACK-FOOTED FERRET (MUSTELA NIGRIPES) POPULATION IN SOUTH DAKOTA, USA.

As part of the national recovery effort, endangered black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) were reintroduced to the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, US in 2000. Despite an encouraging start, numbers of ferrets at the site have declined. In an effort to determine possible causes of the population decline, we undertook a pathogen survey in 2012 to detect exposure to West Nile virus (WNV), canine distemper virus (CDV), plague (Yersinia pestis), tularemia (Francisella tularensis), and heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) using coyotes (Canis latrans) as a sentinel animal. The highest

Zwitterionic Phosphodiester-Substituted Neoglycoconjugates as Ligands for Antibodies and Acute Phase Proteins.

Zwitterionic modifications of glycans, such as phosphorylcholine and phosphoethanolamine, are known from a range of prokaryotic and eukaryotic species and are recognized by mammalian antibodies and pentraxins; however, defined saccharide ligands modified with these zwitterionic moieties for high-throughput studies are lacking. In this study, we prepared and tested example mono- and disaccharides 6-substituted with either phosphorylcholine or phosphoethanolamine as bovine serum albumin neoglycoconjugates or printed in a microarray format for subsequent assessment of their binding to lectins, pe

Intraspecific genetic variation and phylogenetic analysis of Dirofilaria immitis samples from Western China using complete ND1 and 16S rDNA gene sequences.

Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm) is the causative agent of an important zoonotic disease that is spread by mosquitoes. In this study, molecular and phylogenetic characterization of D. immitis were performed based on complete ND1 and 16S rDNA gene sequences, which provided the foundation for more advanced molecular diagnosis, prevention, and control of heartworm diseases. The mutation rate and evolutionary divergence in adult heartworm samples from seven dogs in western China were analyzed to obtain information on genetic diversity and variability. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred using

Active and passive immunization of mice against larval Dirofilaria immitis.

The objective of this study was to determine if Dirofilaria immitis larvae would survive in diffusion chambers implanted in dogs and mice and secondly to determine if mice could be immunized against infection with D. immitis. Dirofilaria immitis third-stage larvae (L3) survived and grew in diffusion chambers implanted in dogs and mice for at least 3 wk. BALB/c mice, which were repeatedly infected with live L3, showed resistance to challenge infections. Dead L3, with or without adjuvants elicited no protective immunity. A correlation was found between the degree of immune protection seen in mic

A preliminary survey of feline filarial parasites in Kerala State, India.

Feline filarial parasites remain among the least investigated in India, despite the well-established endemicity of filariosis in canine and human populations. This study aimed to assess filarial infections in domestic cats in Kerala using both microscopy and molecular techniques, with a focus on evaluating their potential role as reservoir hosts. From September 2023 to February 2024, 300 owned cats presented to the University Veterinary Hospital, Mannuthy, were screened for circulating microfilariae using wet blood film examination. Four cats (1.33%) tested positive, of which three harbored sh

Mosquito-borne heartworm Dirofilaria immitis in dogs from Australia.

BACKGROUND: Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) in dogs is considered endemic in Australia, but the clinical heartworm disease caused by the heartworm is rare and prevalence is low. The mainstream prevention of the heartworm is based on macrocyclic lactone (ML) administration. The aim of this study was to confirm endemism of the heartworm under current Australian conditions using a cohort of recent microfilaria-positive dogs which were on variable heartworm prevention. METHODS: A hotspot of canine heartworm antigen-positive and microfilaria-positive dogs has been detected recently in Queensland,

Zoonotic Dirofilaria repens (Nematoda: Filarioidea) in Aedes vexans mosquitoes, Czech Republic.

The surveillance of vectors for arthropod-borne pathogens is nowadays an important tool in surveillance programmes throughout Europe. Whereas many studies have been performed to screen arthropods for viruses or bacterial pathogens, only limited information is available concerning the geographical distribution and vector range of pathogenic filariae in Central Europe. To consider the prevalence of filarial parasites in mosquito vectors, we performed a molecular survey of mosquitoes for filarial DNA. Mosquito collection was conducted at six study sites in the South Moravian region (Czech Republi

Utility of cardiac biomarkers during adulticide treatment of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis) in dogs.

Heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasitic disease of dogs and other carnivores, characterized by the presence of adult worms in the pulmonary arteries and right ventricle, leading to pulmonary hypertension which may progress to congestive heart failure. Cardiac biomarkers are biological parameters that can be objectively measured as indicators of pathological processes, or to assess the response to therapeutic interventions. To evaluate the myocardial damage during the adulticide treatment in 15 heartworm-infected dogs with ivermectin, doxycycline and melarsomine, measurements of

Vascular endothelial cell activation by adult Dirofilaria immitis antigens.

Dirofilaria immitis is the causal agent of cardiopulmonary dirofilariosis (heartworm disease). Adult worms lodge in the pulmonary arteries and right ventricle, thus vascular endothelium is exposed to high concentrations of Dirofilaria antigenic products. Heartworm disease habitually develops as a chronic foreseeable pathology. Moreover, the simultaneous death of many adult worms, naturally or induced by a filaricide treatment, can cause acute thromboembolisms and endarteritis. To better understand the effects of the massive death of D. immitis adult worms on the blood vessel endothelium, we cu

Seroprevalence of canine dirofilariosis in South Korea.

Eight-hundred and forty eight dogs (480 females and 368 males) not on chemoprophylaxis were examined for Dirofilaria immitis infection from 2001 to 2002. Three-hundred and thirty nine (40.0%) of 848 samples tested with antigen detecting ELISA kits showed positive reaction for D. immitis antigen. More male (43.5%) than female (37.3%) dogs were affected in this study, although there was no significant difference between both groups. Chi2 analysis showed that female and male dogs of shoreline areas had higher significant prevalence than other areas (P<0.001), respectively. The mean overall positi

Thiacetarsamide depresses relaxation of canine pulmonary artery in vitro.

Little information is available on the primary pharmacological effects of thiacetarsamide on mammalian systems, particularly on blood vessels. The effects of thiacetarsamide on arterial responses was studied in isolated rings from canine pulmonary artery. Vessels were exposed to thiacetarsamide and dose-response relationships were applied to methacholine and nitroglycerin. To rule out non-specific effects of antihelmintics, the effects of two other antifilarial drugs, diethylcarbamazine and ivermectin, were also tested. Thiacetarsamide significantly depressed relaxation of canine pulmonary art

Seroprevalence and geographic distribution of Dirofilaria immitis and tick-borne infections (Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, and Ehrlichia canis) in dogs from Romania.

Tick-borne diseases are of great concern worldwide. Despite this, in Romania there is only limited information regarding the prevalence of vector-borne pathogens in dogs. In all, 1146 serum samples were tested by SNAP(®) 4Dx(®) (IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., Westbrook, ME) for Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Ehrlichia canis antibodies, and for Dirofilaria immitis antigen. The correlation between positive cases and their geographic distribution, as well as potential risk factors (age, sex, breed, type of dog, habitat, and prophylactic treatments) were evaluated. Overall, 129 do

Environmental factors associated with Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii seropositivity in free-ranging coyotes from northern California.

Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii is a newly recognized pathogen of domestic dogs and humans. Coyotes (Canis latrans) are considered an important reservoir of this bacterium in the western United States, but its vectors are still unknown. Our objective was to identify environmental factors associated with Bartonella antibody prevalence in 239 coyotes from northern California, using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, associations were evaluated between B. v. berkhoffii and two pathogens with known vectors and habitat requirements, Dirofilaria immitis and Anaplasma phagocytop

The comparison of spatial variation and risk factors between mosquito-borne and tick-borne diseases: Seroepidemiology of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma species, and Dirofilaria immitis in dogs.

Canine ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis and heartworm diseases are vector-borne and zoonotic infections. To compare epidemiology of these vector-borne diseases, a community-based study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma sp. and Dirofilaria immitis infections among healthy pet dogs. Prevalence distribution patterns were geographically contrasting between tick-borne E. canis/Anaplasma sp. infections and mosquito-borne D. immitis infection. Although highly enzootic communities of ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis scattered in mountainous environment at e

Specific polymerase chain reaction for differential diagnosis of Dirofilaria immitis and Dipetalonema reconditum using primers derived from internal transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2).

Both Dirofilaria immiti and Dipetalonema reconditum may be found in blood of infected dogs but it is not easy to distinguish D. immitis from D. reconditum in morphology. We cloned and sequenced the contiguous internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, of these two different parasites and published on GenBank as AF217800 for D. immiti and AF217801 for D. reconditum in this study. We designed two pairs of specific primers derived from ITS2 being used for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The amplicons of ITS2 from D. immiti and D. reconditum are 302 and 348bp, respectively.
