Diversity of rickettsiae in domestic, synanthropic, and sylvatic mammals and their ectoparasites in a spotted fever-epidemic region at the western US-Mexico border.

Over one hundred cases of human rickettsiosis, many fatal, are reported annually across the US-Mexico transboundary region, representing a likely undercount. Although cases are often attributed to Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, multiple other Rickettsia pathogens are present in North America. We conducted multiple-host surveillance of domestic, synanthropic, and sylvatic mammals and their ectoparasites to investigate the ecology of Rickettsia species in this region. A total of 499 mammals, including 83 dogs, 23 wild carnivores, five lagomorphs, and 388 rodent

Molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium isolates from humans in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis is a gastrointestinal disease with global distribution. It has been a reportable disease in Canada since 2000; however, routine molecular surveillance is not conducted. Therefore, sources of contamination are unknown. The aim of this project was to identify species and subtypes of Cryptosporidium in clinical cases from Ontario, the largest province in Canada, representing one third of the Canadian population, in order to understand transmission patterns. METHODS: A total of 169 frozen, banked, unpreserved stool specimens that were microscopy positive for Cryptosp

High Diversity of Cryptosporidium Species and Subtypes Identified in Cryptosporidiosis Acquired in Sweden and Abroad.

The intestinal protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium is an important cause of diarrheal disease worldwide. The aim of this study was to expand the knowledge on the molecular epidemiology of human cryptosporidiosis in Sweden to better understand transmission patterns and potential zoonotic sources. Cryptosporidium-positive fecal samples were collected between January 2013 and December 2014 from 12 regional clinical microbiology laboratories in Sweden. Species and subtype determination was achieved using small subunit ribosomal RNA and 60 kDa glycoprotein gene analysis. Samples were available for 3

A retrospective epidemiological analysis of human Cryptosporidium infection in China during the past three decades (1987-2018).

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis is an emerging infectious disease of public health significance worldwide. The burden of disease caused by Cryptosporidium varies between and within countries/areas. To have a comprehensive understanding of epidemiological status and characteristics of human Cryptosporidium infection in China since the first report in 1987, a retrospective epidemiological analysis was conducted by presenting differences in the prevalence of Cryptosporidium by province, year, population, living environment and season and possible transmission routes and risk factors as well as gene

Assessing the health risks of reintroduction: The example of the Amur leopard, Panthera pardus orientalis.

Translocation of wildlife as a means of reintroducing or reinforcing threatened populations is an important conservation tool but carries health risks for the translocated animals and their progeny, as well as wildlife, domestic animals and humans in the release area. Disease risk analyses (DRA) are used to identify, prioritize and design mitigation strategies to address these threats. Here, we use a DRA undertaken for Amur leopards (Panthera pardus orientalis) to illustrate how specific methodology can optimize mitigation strategy design. A literature review identified a total of 98 infectiou

Spatiotemporal dynamics of Toxoplasma gondii infection in Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis) in western Québec, Canada.

Toxoplasma gondii, one of the more common zoonotic parasites in the world, can cause serious illness in humans and other animals worldwide. Felids are the only known host that can shed T. gondii oocysts, which are essential to the perpetuation of the parasite. In much of boreal Canada, the Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis) is the only wild felid host that could contribute to environmental contamination with T. gondii oocysts. We estimated the prevalence of T. gondii antibodies in Canadian lynx from western Québec and compared our results with earlier findings in the same region 12 yr earlier. We

Gastric spiral bacteria and intramuscular sarcocysts in African lions from Namibia.

Six juvenile male, one adult male, and three adult, female African lions (Panthera leo) from Etosha National Park, Republic of Namibia were presented for necropsy. Two of four adults and one of six juveniles had moderate numbers of gastric spiral bacteria. Additionally, four of four adults had sarcocysts. All juveniles had enteric Sarcocystis sp. oocysts, but no sarcocysts. The gastric spiral bacteria were located extracellularly in fundic and pyloric glands, and also apparently intracellularly within parietal cells in the fundic region. The organisms were 4 to 8 microns long, 0.63 micron wide

Tick-, Flea-, and Louse-Borne Diseases of Public Health and Veterinary Significance in Nigeria.

Mosquito-borne diseases are common high-impact diseases in tropical and subtropical areas. However, other non-mosquito vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) may share their geographic distribution, seasonality, and clinical manifestations, thereby contributing their share to the morbidity and mortality caused by febrile illnesses in these regions. The purpose of this work was to collect and review existing information and identify knowledge gaps about tick, flea-, and louse-borne diseases of veterinary and public health significance in Nigeria. Full-length articles about VBPs were reviewed and relevan

Antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus spp. isolated from sporotrichosis-affected cats in Brazil: Detection of MRSP and MRSA.

Recently, Brazil has experienced a zoonotic emergence of sporotrichosis. The associated cutaneous lesions are often extensive and slow to heal, thereby providing a gateway for opportunistic bacteria belonging to the normal skin microbiota. Among these, Staphylococcus spp. are of particular concern due to their high prevalence and notable levels of antimicrobial resistance. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize Staphylococcus spp. isolated from the cutaneous wounds of domestic cats undergoing treatment for sporotrichosis and exhibiting clinical signs of secondary bacteria

Cytauxzoon paradoxurus n. sp., a novel Cytauxzoon species identified in common palm civets in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: The common palm civet (Paradoxurus musangus) is a species native to Southeast Asia. Highly adapted to urbanised environments, these civets can often be found in proximity to humans and companion animals, raising the concern of pathogen transmission at the human-wildlife and wildlife-domestic animal interface. Whilst there have been reports of various bacteria and viruses detected in civets, little is known about the protozoa that they may harbour. In this study, we screened the common palm civets in Singapore for tick-borne protozoan parasites known as piroplasms. METHODS: Over a

Feline heartworm disease and environmental allergens hypersensitivity: is there a link?

BACKGROUND: Cats can be infected by Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent of heartworm disease, characterized by respiratory signs, airway hyperreactivity, remodelling and inflammation. Allergy is a multifactorial pathology, and the role of a number of helminth parasites in the development of allergies in humans and other species has been demonstrated in many studies. The aim of the present study was to verify whether cats seropositive for D. immitis present hypersensitivity to some environmental allergens. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 120 cats and tested for the presence of

Preterm management of sickle cell crisis in a twin pregnancy with suboptimal antenatal care in a primary healthcare facility: A case report from Cameroon and literature review.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Twin pregnancies in homozygous sickle cell patients are not only uncommon in our setting but are most often associated with adverse maternal-fetal outcomes especially in primary healthcare facilities where most of these cases initially present due to financial constraints, though lacking the necessary technical platform (including blood banks) to properly manage them. ABSTRACT: We are reporting the case of the preterm management of sickle cell crises in a twin pregnancy with poor antenatal care uptake in a primary healthcare facility devoid of a blood bank in Cameroon. Molecular identification of Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Blastocystis from stray and household cats and cat owners in Tehran, Iran.

Cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and blastocystosis are among the most important parasitic diseases common between humans and cats. In addition, there are concerns about the possible transmission of zoonotic parasites from infected cats to humans. Hence, we investigated the molecular epidemiology of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Blastocystis sp. in stray and household cats and cat owners. Our study was performed on 132, 33, and 33 fecal samples of stray and household cats, as well as cat owners in Tehran, Iran. Cryptosporidium spp. was identified using a nested PCR targeting the
