[The drug susceptibility pattern of the presumed etiologic agents of infectious enteritis including verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O-157].

The drug susceptibility patterns were investigated for verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) including O-157, Salmonella spp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Campylobacter jejuni subsp. jejuni that were obtained in and after July 1996. The results are summarized as follows; 1. We found highly resistant strains of VTEC to tetracycline (TC) and ampicillin (ABPC). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of some of the drugs against VTEC in an aerobic condition were significantly different from those in an anaerobic condition. For example, aerobic.anaerobic MIC ranges of the drugs tested were a

Environmental surveillance of bacteria in a new intensive care unit using plate sweeps.

The hospital environment plays a critical role in the transmission of infectious diseases. Surveillance methods often rely on selective enrichment or deep metagenomic sequencing, which both have significant drawbacks in terms of community resolution and cost. Plate sweeps provide a practical moderate approach to cultivate a wide range of bacteria, capturing more diversity than a single colony pick without high sequencing costs. Here, we use this approach to characterize a newly built hospital intensive care unit (ICU) in Queensland, Australia. Between November 2023 and February 2024, we sample

Enrichment of high-risk antibiotic resistance genes on microplastics in freshwater environments: A meta-analysis.

Microplastics (MPs) and their associated biofilms, collectively known as the plastisphere, are emerging as environmental vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, whether MPs preferentially retain health-relevant resistance genes remains unclear. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing ARG profiles on MPs and in surrounding freshwater environments. The meta-analysis revealed significant ARG enrichment in MP biofilms compared to water. Subgroup analyses further revealed that MPs enriched several mobile and enzyme-mediated resistance categories, includi

Winter migratory birds may carry diverse antimicrobial resistance genes into Japan.

BACKGROUND: Environmental surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in wildlife remains limited, despite increasing recognition that resistance determinants can circulate across human, livestock, and natural ecosystems. Migratory waterbirds move long distances and aggregate at shared stopover and wintering sites, potentially facilitating the acquisition and redistribution of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) across regions. However, nationwide evidence describing the breadth of ARGs carried by winter migratory birds in Japan is scarce. We assessed the diversity and distribution of ARG
