Alterations in heart rate variability in patients with peripheral arterial disease requiring surgical revascularization have limited association with postoperative major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events.

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and associates with high mortality after surgery. Since abnormal heart rate variability (HRV) is predictive of postoperative complications, we investigated the relations of HRV with PAD, OSA and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five patients (67±9 years) scheduled for sub-inguinal revascularization and 15 controls (63±6 years) underwent polysomnography and HRV analyses. OSA with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥20/hour was considered significant.

Spatio-temporal anomalous diffusion imaging: results in controlled phantoms and in excised human meningiomas.

Recently, we measured two anomalous diffusion (AD) parameters: the spatial and the temporal AD indices, called γ and α, respectively, by using spectroscopic pulse gradient field methods. We showed that γ quantifies pseudo-superdiffusion processes, while α quantifies subdiffusion processes. Here, we propose γ and α maps obtained in a controlled heterogeneous phantom, comprised of packed micro-beads in water and in excised human meningiomas. In few words, α maps represent the multi-scale spatial distribution of the disorder degree in the system, while γ maps are influenced by local internal grad

Risk factors for prediction of inadequate response to antiresorptives.

Some patients sustain fractures while on antiresorptives. Whether this represents an inadequate response (IR) to treatment or a chance event has not been elucidated. We performed a study to identify which patients are more likely to fracture while on treatment. This is a multicentric, cross-sectional study of postmenopausal women on antiresorptives for osteoporosis in 12 Spanish hospitals, classified as adequate responders (ARs) if on treatment with antiresorptives for 5 years with no incident fractures or inadequate responders (IRs) if an incident fracture occurred between 1 and 5 years on tr

Cortical surface morphometry changes following combined translingual neural stimulation with the portable neuromodulation stimulator and physical therapy in patients with mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often causes persistent balance and gait deficits, especially in mild-to-moderate TBI (mmTBI). Physical therapy is standard but often limited as a standalone treatment. Translingual neural stimulation (TLNS) is an emerging neuromodulation approach combining cranial nerve stimulation with targeted exercise to promote neuroplasticity and recovery. Its effects on cortical surface morphometry in mmTBI remain uninvestigated. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from a completed clinical trial (NCT02158494). Nine chronic mmTBI patients underwent a two-

Biochar Application Improves Soil Aggregate Stability and Aggregate-Associated Carbon Fractions Through Microbial Community Regulation in Eucalyptus Plantations-A Seven-Year Field Experiment.

Biochar has been used to improve soils and promote sustainable agricultural development. The effects of applying different doses of biochar on soil aggregate structure and stability, aggregate-associated microbial communities, aggregate carbon fractions, and underlying mechanisms in planted forest soil ecosystems remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the effects of biochar amendment (7 years) on carbon stabilization in plantation soils. The effects of biochar application (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%) on water-stable aggregate distribution, stability indices such as mean weight diamete

Clock rate and controllable volume: Physical constraints on biological pacemakers without assuming metabolic scaling.

How the resting heart rate of mammals scales with body size is a classic allometric problem. Let M denote body mass, Vh heart volume, τ the mean interval period, and fH=1/τ. Although quarter-power scaling has been widely cited, reported exponents vary across taxa and physiological states. Here, we derive a constraint-based feasible envelope for resting heart-rate scaling without presupposing any metabolic scaling law; neuroendocrine control and metabolic demand are treated as selecting operating points within this envelope. We model the heart as a finite three-dimensional pacemaker volume embe

Semantic edge detection of fractures in geological outcrops using edge aware dilated convolutional networks.

Natural fracture networks govern subsurface fluid flow, rock-mass stability, and strain accommodation in the brittle crust, yet their automated delineation from outcrop imagery remains challenging due to multi-scale size variability, low contrast between fracture boundaries and host-rock texture, and scene clutter from vegetation, shadows, and blast artifacts. Standard encoder-decoder networks apply fixed-size receptive fields that inadequately span the fractal-like scale range of natural discontinuity networks, while gradient-based classical detectors lack the semantic context required to sup

Retinal Microvascular Disease in Diabetes and Its Prognostic Utility for Cardiovascular and Renal Complications: A Comprehensive Literature Review.

Retinal microvascular impairments are recognized as a non-invasive measure of systemic vascular injury in patients with diabetes. Change in retinal structure and function may serve as markers of renal and cardiovascular microvascular pathology, thereby providing a potential source of prognostic information for predicting outcomes of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The study design of a comprehensive literature review was selected. The literature review was conducted using the systematic approach of PRISMA 2020 guidelines. However,

Predicting nitrogen narcosis using the electroencephalogram recorded from experienced divers.

Nitrogen narcosis causes acute cognitive impairment in divers breathing compressed air at depth, increasing injury and fatality risk. Susceptibility varies widely between individuals, making real-time cortical monitoring a potential safety tool. We recorded 32-channel electroencephalography (EEG) from 45 divers (both sexes; aged 20-55 yr) at rest across four randomized crossover hyperbaric studies. We manipulated pressure (101-811 kPa) and breathing gas (air or heliox) to create two classes of recordings: narcotic (high-pressure air) or non-narcotic (low-pressure air; heliox at any pressure);

The Effect of Auditory Stimulation on the Nonlinear Dynamics of Heart Rate: The Impact of Emotional Valence and Arousal.

BACKGROUND: Although it is known that sound exposure evokes changes in autonomic activity, the effects of noise and music on the nonlinear behavior of heart rate fluctuations remain poorly understood and controversial. This study aims to assess the influence of sound subjective emotional valence and arousal on the nonlinear characteristics of the autonomic nervous system during passive listening. METHODS: In this study, 42 subjects listened to four sounds: (1) white noise, (2) road traffic noise, (3) excitatory music, and (4) a lullaby. The experiment consisted of two consecutive sessions: 5

Resolving trabecular metaphyseal bone profiles downstream of the growth plate adds value to bone histomorphometry in mouse models.

INTRODUCTION: Histomorphometry of rodent metaphyseal trabecular bone, by histology or microCT, is generally restricted to the mature secondary spongiosa, excluding the primary spongiosa nearest the growth plate by imposing an 'offset'. This analyses the bulk static properties of a defined segment of secondary spongiosa, usually regardless of proximity to the growth plate. Here we assess the value of trabecular morphometry that is spatially resolved according to the distance 'downstream' of-and thus time since formation at-the growth plate. Pursuant to this, we also investigate the validity of

Analysis of structural effects of sickle cell disease on brain vasculature of mice using three-dimensional quantitative phase imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE: Although the molecular origins of sickle cell disease (SCD) have been extensively studied, the effects of SCD on the vasculature-which can influence blood clotting mechanisms, pain crises, and strokes-are not well understood. Improving this understanding can yield insight into the mechanisms and wide-ranging effects of this devastating disease. AIM: We aim to demonstrate the ability of a label-free 3D quantitative phase imaging technology, called quantitative oblique back-illumination microscopy (qOBM), to provide insight into the effects of SCD on brain vasculature. APPROACH:

Eight months follow-up of corneal nerves and sensitivity after treatment with cenegermin for neurotrophic keratopathy.

BACKGROUD: Cenegermin (Oxervate, Dompè Farmaceutici, Milan, IT), a recombinant human NGF, is a potentially healing new drug for neurotrophic keratopathy (NK), a rare but challenging disease affecting the cornea. To date, studies that evaluate its mid-term effect on corneal nerves and sensitivity are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the recovery and morphology of subbasal corneal nerves in patients treated with Cenegermin for NK and assess their correlation with corneal sensitivity. METHODS: This prospective, observational case series study was carried out between May 2018 and August 2020 at t

Effects of mirror-box therapy on modulation of sensorimotor EEG oscillatory rhythms: a single-case longitudinal study.

We provide direct electrophysiological evidence that mirror therapy (MT) can change brain activity and aid in the recovery of motor function after stroke. In this longitudinal single-case study, the subject was a 58-yr-old man with right-hand hemiplegia due to ischemic stroke. Over a 9-mo period we treated him with MT twice a week and measured electroencephalograms (EEG) before, during, and after each therapy session. Using advanced signal processing methods, we identified five distinct movement-related oscillatory EEG components: one slow component designated as mu rhythm and four faster comp

A spectrum of retinal vasculature measures and coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We aimed to comprehensively describe a spectrum of retinal vessel measures including fractal dimension (Df) and their associations with indices of coronary artery disease (CAD) extent and severity, as well as hypertension and diabetes. METHODS: The Australian Heart Eye Study (AHES) is an observational study that surveyed 1680 participants presenting to a tertiary referral hospital for the evaluation of potential CAD by coronary angiography. A range of newer retinal vessel geometric measures (Df, curvature tortuosity, and branching angle) were quantified from retinal photo

Hemodilution during venous gas embolization improves gas exchange, without altering V(A)/Q or pulmonary blood flow distributions.

BACKGROUND: Isovolemic anemia results in improved gas exchange in rabbits with normal lungs but in relatively poorer gas exchange in rabbits with whole-lung atelectasis. In the current study, the authors characterized the effects of hemodilution on gas exchange in a distinct model of diffuse lung injury: venous gas embolization. METHODS: Twelve anesthetized rabbits were mechanically ventilated at a fixed rate and volume. Gas embolization was induced by continuous infusion of nitrogen via an internal jugular venous catheter. Serial hemodilution was performed in six rabbits by simultaneous with

Limbic-predominant neuroimaging correlates of plasma p-Tau217 in preclinical and clinical Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Plasma phosphorylated tau at threonine 217 (p-Tau217) has emerged as a highly sensitive and specific blood-based biomarker for Alzheimer's Disease (AD). However, its regional brain correlates with multimodal neuroimaging, beyond tau-PET, remain underexplored, particularly in early disease phases where limbic involvement may predominate. This study aimed to map the associations of plasma p-Tau217 with amyloid-PET burden, FDG-PET metabolism, and structural brain morphometry in a well-characterized cohort spanning cognitively unimpaired (CU) and cognitively impaired (CI) individuals a

Spatially resolved longitudinal changes in tibial subchondral trabecular bone texture for exploratory prediction of incident knee osteoarthritis.

Although prediction of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (rKOA) using baseline clinical and radiological data has been widely studied, the impact of temporal changes in imaging and clinical biomarkers remains less investigated. This study examined whether longitudinal changes in spatially resolved trabecular bone texture (TBT) improve prediction of incident rKOA. Participants with longitudinal data were selected from the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Incident rKOA was defined as Kellgren-Lawrence grade (KL) 0 at baseline and KL ≥ 2 at 48 months. One knee per participant was included (n=481). Fract

Morphological Characteristics, Sediment Grain Size, and Spatial Distribution Patterns of Caragana tibetica Nabkhas in Desert Steppe.

Nabkhas are a common type of biogenic aeolian landform in arid and semi-arid regions. Their morphological characteristics, surface sediment grain size composition, and spatial distribution patterns can, to some extent, be associated with the interactions between vegetation and the aeolian environment. In this study, nabkhas formed around Caragana tibetica shrubs in the desert steppe of Damao Banner, Inner Mongolia, were selected as the research object. Based on field investigations, UAV image identification, grain size analysis, and spatial point pattern analysis, the characteristics of nabkha
