Genetic lineages of Salmonella enterica serovar Kentucky spreading in pet reptiles.

The purpose of the study was to define genetic diversity of reptilian Salmonella enterica serovar (S.) Kentucky isolates and their epidemiological relations to the ones from poultry, food, and environmental origin in Poland. Between 2010 and 2012 twenty-four S. Kentucky isolates derived from snakes (N=8), geckos (N=7), chameleons (N=4), agamas (N=1), lizard (N=1), and environmental swabs taken from reptile exhibition (N=3) were identified. They were characterized with antimicrobial minimal inhibitory concentration testing, XbaI-PFGE and MLST typing. The profiles compared to S. Kentucky availab

Tracking the feeding patterns of tsetse flies (Glossina genus) by analysis of bloodmeals using mitochondrial cytochromes genes.

Tsetse flies are notoriously difficult to observe in nature, particularly when populations densities are low. It is therefore difficult to observe them on their hosts in nature; hence their vertebrate species can very often only be determined indirectly by analysis of their gut contents. This knowledge is a critical component of the information on which control tactics can be developed. The objective of this study was to determine the sources of tsetse bloodmeals, hence investigate their feeding preferences. We used mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 (COI) and cytochrome b (cytb) gene sequen

Psychometric Properties of a Behavioral Sedation Scale for Green Iguanas (Iguana iguana).

This prospective, randomized, complete crossover study evaluated the psychometric properties of a behavioral sedation scale in 8 adult green iguanas (Iguana iguana) following intramuscular administration of midazolam (2 mg/kg) or saline. Each animal underwent both treatments with a washout period of 7 days. Sedation was assessed in real time using a previously described behavioral scale comprising eye opening, head height, muscle tone, handling, and body righting reflex, with total scores ranging from 1 to 14. Assessments were performed at baseline and at multiple time points up to 360 minutes

A novel peptide isolated from Aphonopelma chalcodes tarantula venom with benefits on pancreatic islet function and appetite control.

Proof-of-concept for therapeutic application of venom-derived compounds in diabetes is exemplified by the incretin mimetic, exenatide, originally extracted from the saliva of the venomous Heloderma suspectum lizard. In this regard, we have isolated and sequenced a novel 28 amino acid peptide named Δ-theraphotoxin-Ac1 (Δ-TRTX-AC1) from venom of the Mexican Blond tarantula spider Aphonopelma chalcodes, with potential therapeutic benefits for diabetes. Following confirmation of the structure and safety profile of the synthetic peptide, assessment of enzymatic stability and effects of Δ-TRTX-AC1 o

Caught on camera: Field imagery reveals the unexpected importance of vertebrates for biological control of the banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus Col. Curculionidae).

Understanding of ecological interactions is necessary for the application of biological control. Banana is the second most produced fruit worldwide and the banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) is the most important pest of banana and plantain. Its biological control remains challenging because of the robustness and cryptic behaviour of the adult and the hidden development of larval stages. Researchers therefore tend to favour conservation biological control of this pest. The commonly used methods for measuring the effects of natural enemies on the regulation of this pest focus on invertebrate

Wide Distribution and Specific Resistance Pattern to Third-Generation Cephalosporins of Enterobacter cloacae Complex Members in Humans and in the Environment in Guadeloupe (French West Indies).

Species belonging to Enterobacter cloacae complex have been isolated in numerous environments and samples of various origins. They are also involved in opportunistic infections in plants, animals, and humans. Previous prospection in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) indicated a high frequency of E. cloacae complex strains resistant to third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs) in a local lizard population (Anolis marmoratus), but knowledge of the distribution and resistance of these strains in humans and the environment is limited. The aim of this study was to compare the distribution and antibiotic

A non-pathogenic Leishmania tarentolae vector based- HCV polytope DNA vaccine elicits potent and long lasting Th1 and CTL responses in BALB/c mice model.

Despite successful anti-viral (DAAs) treatment of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, recent data indicated the need for an effective vaccine. Preexisting anti-vector immunity is an obstacle for application of live vectors for antigen delivery and development of effective T-cell based HCV vaccines. Herein, we report construction of recombinant Leishmania tarentolae, a lizard (non-human) parasite, expressing an HCV polytope DNA, PT-NT(gp96), encoding for several immunogenic HCV epitopes and evaluation of its immunogenicity in three different prime/boost immunization groups (G) of BALB/c mice. Convergence in reduced body size, head size, and blood glucose in three island reptiles.

Many oceanic islands harbor diverse species that differ markedly from their mainland relatives with respect to morphology, behavior, and physiology. A particularly common morphological change exhibited by a wide range of species on islands worldwide involves either a reduction in body size, termed island dwarfism, or an increase in body size, termed island gigantism. While numerous instances of dwarfism and gigantism have been well documented, documentation of other morphological changes on islands remains limited. Furthermore, we lack a basic understanding of the physiological mechanisms that

Epithelial cadherin disassociates from the lateral plasma membrane of uterine epithelial cells throughout pregnancy in a marsupial.

The uterine luminal epithelium is the first site of contact between fetal and maternal tissues during therian pregnancy and must undergo specialised changes for implantation of the blastocyst to be successful. These changes, collectively termed the plasma membrane transformation (PMT), allow the blastocyst to attach to the uterine epithelium preceding the formation of a placenta. There are similarities in the morphological and molecular changes occurring in live-bearing eutherian species during the PMT studied so far. Similar cellular remodelling occurs in a marsupial species, the fat-tailed d

Rattlesnake cytochrome c. A re-appraisal of the reported amino acid sequence.

The amino acid sequence of rattlesnake cytochrome c was originally reported in 1965, and was one of the earlier sequences to be studied. When compared with other mitochondrial cytochromes c, the snake sequence was soon seen to be anomalous. There were several positions in which the snake protein resembled human cytochrome c, although comparable anomalies were not reported for the protein from other reptiles such as lizard and turtle. Explanations of these results have included accelerated evolution in the snake lineage, paralogy rather than orthology, and faulty determination of the sequence,

Adrenomedullin in nonmammalian vertebrate pancreas: an immunocytochemical study.

Adrenomedullin (AM) immunoreactive cells have been identified, by immunocytochemical methods, in the endocrine pancreas of seven nonmammalian vertebrate species, belonging to the cartilaginous and bony fish, amphibian, reptilian, and bird classes. The frequency and distribution of the pancreatic AM cells vary among the different animals. In most species, these cells are found scattered mainly among the exocrine component, with a few present in the islet-like structures. The distribution of AM cells in both fish species and Xenopus shows an inverse pattern, since almost every AM cell is located

An allometric comparison of the mitochondria of mammalian and reptilian tissues: the implications for the evolution of endothermy.

The effects of body size and phylogeny on metabolic capacities were examined by comparing the mitochondrial capacities of 6 mammalian and 4 reptilian species representing 100-fold body weight ranges. The mammals examined included 3 eutherian, 2 marsupial and a monotreme species and the reptiles 2 saurian, 1 crocodilian and 1 testudine species. The tissues examined were liver, kidney, brain, heart, lung and skeletal muscle. Allometric equations were derived for tissue weights, mitochondrial volume densities, internal mitochondrial membrane surface area densities, tissue mitochondrial membrane s

Amino acid sequences of helospectins, new members of the glucagon superfamily, found in Gila monster venom.

The amino acid sequences of two closely related peptides from Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) venom are reported. Helospectin I is a 38-residue peptide, His-Ser-Asp-Ala-Thr-Phe-Thr-Ala-Glu-Tyr-Ser-Lys-Leu-Leu-Ala-Lys-Leu-Ala- Leu-Gln - Lys-Tyr-Leu-Glu-Ser-Ile-Leu-Gly-Ser-Ser-Thr-Ser-Pro-Arg-Pro-Pro-Ser-Ser, and helospectin II is a 37-residue peptide identical to helospectin I except that it lacks serine 38. Helospectins are pancreatic secretagogues with structures and bioactivities similar to vasoactive intestinal peptide and other members of the glucagon superfamily. The relative significa

Zoonotic public health risks in farmed versus wild-caught wildlife for traditional markets for food: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Intensive farming, wildlife trade, and close human-animal contact in traditional markets for food (TMFs) are widely considered drivers of zoonotic disease emergence. However, comparative evidence assessing differences between farmed and wild-caught wildlife at the market interface remains limited. This study evaluated whether animals sourced from farmed versus wild-caught systems differ in pathogen detection as a proxy for zoonotic hazard and does not measure transmission or human infection outcomes. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and MEDLINE were systematically searched up to August 11, 2025

Mapping High-Rate Clusters of Animal Contact-Related Human Salmonella enterica Single-State Outbreaks in the United States, 2009-2022: A Spatial Epidemiological Approach to Inform Public Health Surveillance.

INTRODUCTION: Nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica (NTS) is a major zoonotic enteric pathogen. Animal contact-related NTS outbreaks have increased in the United States over the last decade. Geospatial analysis can identify locations with elevated risk of NTS outbreaks where public health authorities can focus their NTS prevention and intervention efforts. METHODS: We analysed NTS outbreak data reported from individual states to the Centers for Disease Control via the National Outbreak Reporting System between 2009 and 2022 across the continental contiguous United States. Metagenomics reveals cryptic circulation of zoonotic viruses in Nigeria.

Zoonotic spillover events pose an ongoing threat to global health, with historic and recent viral diseases of international concern emerging from animal reservoirs 1-6. In Nigeria, limited surveillance of animal hosts at the human and animal interface continues to hinder our understanding of viruses that are cryptically circulating in animals near human dwellings with potential for consequential spillover events. We performed unbiased metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) on tissue and swab samples collected from 240 individual animals across 11 taxa (rodents, shrews, bats, goats, shee

Gastrointestinal apicomplexan parasites of captive reptiles: diversity, causes, consequences.

BACKGROUND: Captive reptiles frequently suffer from gastrointestinal parasites, which stem from their breeding conditions such as limited space and frequent contact with faeces, high numbers of individuals in inadequate conditions, stress, but also from extensive exports and imports in recent years. In particular, parasites with single-host life cycles are common as they can easily complete their development. This study focused on extensive sampling across a variety of captive reptiles groups including lizards (agamas, chameleons, geckos, iguanas, monitors, skinks), snakes, tortoises, and also

Patterns of Limb and Epaxial Muscle Activity During Walking in the Fire Salamander, Salamandra salamandra.

Salamanders and newts (urodeles) are often used as a model system to elucidate the evolution of tetrapod locomotion. Studies range from detailed descriptions of musculoskeletal anatomy and segment kinematics, to bone loading mechanics and inferring central pattern generators. A further area of interest has been in vivo muscle activity patterns, measured through electromyography (EMG). However, most prior EMG work has primarily focused on muscles of the forelimb or hindlimb in specific species or the axial system in others. Here we present data on forelimb, hindlimb, and epaxial muscle activity
