Bone lesions in an infant with congenital parvovirus b19 infection.

Bone lesions on radiographs of newborns often suggest congenital infections. Skeletal roentgenograms are recommended in the evaluation of suspected congenital syphilis, but bone lesions have been recognized in other congenital infections. We report the case of an infant with hydrops fetalis secondary to congenital parvovirus B19 infection who was found to have bone lesions in multiple long and axial bones on admission to the neonatal ICU. Both the infant and her mother were evaluated for other causes of congenital infection, but no other agents were identified. The bone lesions had nearly comp

[Analysis of complications during pregnancy in women with serological features of acute toxoplasmosis or acute parvovirosis].

OBJECTIVES: Toxoplasma gondii and parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infections in a healthy adult are usually asymptomatic. Congenital toxoplasmosis is the cause of hydrocephalus, chorioretinitis and intracranial calcifications. Hydrops remains the most common complication during the fetal PVB infection. The aim of the study was to analyze the complications during pregnancy in women with serological features of acute toxoplasmosis or acute parvovirosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In our study, we have included 1800 pregnant women, hospitalized in Department of Fetal-Maternal Medicine and Gynecology Research

Viral infections as potential triggers of type 1 diabetes.

During the last decades, the incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) has increased significantly, reaching percentages of 3% annually worldwide. This increase suggests that besides genetical factors environmental perturbations (including viral infections) are also involved in the pathogenesis of T1D. T1D has been associated with viral infections including enteroviruses, rubella, mumps, rotavirus, parvovirus and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Although correlations between clinical presentation with T1D and the occurrence of a viral infection that precedes the development of overt disease have been recognize

Spontaneous resolution of mirror syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Mirror syndrome, a rare condition characterized by maternal anasarca in a pregnancy complicated by fetal hydrops, may have a devastating fetal outcome and significant maternal morbidity. CASE: We report a case of mirror syndrome caused by parvovirus B19 infection, which resolved spontaneously with good fetal and maternal outcome. CONCLUSION: The pathogenesis of mirror syndrome is not understood. The trigger for mirror syndrome may be derived from a compromised fetus or placenta.

Pityriasis lichenoides: a cytotoxic T-cell-mediated skin disorder. Evidence of human parvovirus B19 DNA in nine cases.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) and pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) probably represent the polar ends of the same pathologic process, i.e. pityriasis lichenoides (PL), with intermediate forms in between. Previous studies have demonstrated that the inflammatory infiltrate in PLEVA is composed of cytotoxic suppressor T cells, whereas in PLC the helper/inducer T-cell population drives the immunological answer. Furthermore, monoclonal rearrangement of the T-cell receptor-gamma (TCR-gamma) genes was repeatedly found both in PLEVA and PLC. METHODS: Forty-one

Unusual bone marrow manifestations of parvovirus B19 infection in immunocompromised patients.

Parvovirus B19 is responsible for a spectrum of disease in humans. The usual bone marrow findings in acute parvovirus infections are marked erythroid hypoplasia and occasional giant erythroblasts. Intranuclear inclusions in developing erythroid precursors are rarely described in children or adults with parvovirus infection, although abundant intranuclear inclusions are commonly observed in the placenta and other tissues in infected fetuses. In this study, 8 patients are reported in whom the first evidence of parvovirus infection was the recognition of numerous intranuclear inclusions in erythr

Widespread Exposure to Human Parvovirus B19 in the Brazilian Amazon: Evidence from a Community-Based Seroprevalence Survey in Manaus.

INTRODUCTION: Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) causes a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations but is often asymptomatic. In the Brazilian Amazon, where B19V may mimic endemic arboviral infections, epidemiological data remain limited. This study investigated B19V seroprevalence among residents of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 450 age-stratified participants recruited from 2021 to 2023 across different zones of Manaus. Plasma samples were tested for anti-B19V IgG and IgM by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Associations were estimated using Po

Compelling Increase in Parvovirus B19 Infections: Analysis of Molecular Diagnostic Trends (2019-2024).

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) follows a well-documented cyclical epidemiology, with peaks occurring every 3-4 years. However, recent reports indicate an unusual resurgence in B19V infections across multiple countries, prompting increased surveillance. This study analyzed molecular diagnostic assay results from 826 unique-patient samples tested for B19V DNA between 2019 and 2024 at a large Italian tertiary-care hospital, covering pre-, during, and post-COVID-19 years. Overall, 80 of 826 patients (9.7%) tested positive for B19V DNA. A significant increase in positivity was observed in 2024 (23.4%)

Infections and coinfections by respiratory human bocavirus during eight seasons in hospitalized children.

The human bocavirus (hBoV) has been identified in respiratory infections in children in a large number of studies. Despite this, the pathogenic role of the HBoV is under discussion. The main objectives of the study were: to determine the incidence of HBoV in hospitalized children; to describe the main clinical features of the positive children; and to compare the data with those from other viral infections in the same population. A prospective study was performed between 2005 and 2013 including children up to 14-year old with respiratory infection admitted to the Severo Ochoa Hospital (Spain).

A chimeric human APOBEC3A protein with a three amino acid insertion confers differential HIV-1 and adeno-associated virus restriction.

Old World monkey (OWM) and hominid APOBEC3Aproteins exhibit differential restriction activities against lentiviruses and DNA viruses. Human APOBEC3A(hA3A)has weak restriction activity against HIV-1Δvifbut is efficiently restricted by an artificially generated chimeric from mandrills (mndA3A/G). We show that a chimeric hA3Acontaining the "WVS" insertion (hA3A[(27)WVS(29)]) conferred potent HIV-1restriction activity. Analysis of each amino acid of the "WVS" motif show that the length and not necessarily the charge or hydrophobicity of the amino acids accounted for restriction activity. Our resul

Lack of association between B19 or V9 erythrovirus infection and ANCA-positive vasculitides: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the potential association of human B19 or V9 erythrovirus infection and onset of ANCA-positive vasculitides. METHODS: We tested the sera of 13 adults with newly diagnosed ANCA-positive vasculitides. Each was age- and sex-matched to three sera obtained from healthy controls. All samples were tested for B19- and V9-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM antibodies (Ab) (third-generation ELISA), and B19 or V9 DNA was sought with the polymerase chain reaction. Statistical analysis was performed by conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: Patient diagnoses comprised six ca

Parvovirus B19 DNA in kidney tissue of patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) represents a clinicopathological syndrome with diverse causes. We examined the possibility that some cases of FSGS are associated with parvovirus B19 infection. We studied renal biopsy tissue from 40 patients, including those with idiopathic FSGS, collapsing FSGS, membranous nephropathy, and minimal change disease, as well as normal renal tissue removed at the time of nephrectomy from 4 patients. DNA was extracted from frozen blocks of kidney tissue and amplified using nested polymerase chain reaction. Parvovirus B19 DNA was amplified from 8 of 10 pati

Congenital parvovirus infection.

Congenital parvovirus infection was diagnosed in two liveborn premature infants born at 24 and 35 weeks of gestational age. The illnesses were associated with placentomegaly, petechial rash, edema, hepatomegaly, anemia and thrombocytopenia, respiratory insufficiency, and death at 5 and 6 days of age. The syndromes exhibited by these cases shared common but nonspecific features with other life-threatening congenital infections. Serological studies in one case supported the diagnosis of parvoviral infection. Postmortem examination of both revealed nuclear inclusions in erythroid precursor cells

Human parvovirus B19 nonstructural protein NS1 enhanced the expression of cleavage of 70 kDa U1-snRNP autoantigen.

BACKGROUND: Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is known to induce apoptosis that has been associated with a variety of autoimmune disorders. Although we have previously reported that B19 non-structural protein (NS1) induces mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis in COS-7 cells, the precise mechanism of B19-NS1 in developing autoimmunity is still obscure. METHODS: To further examine the effect of B19-NS1 in presence of autoantigens, COS-7 cells were transfected with pEGFP, pEGFP-B19-NS1 and pEGFP-NS1K334E, a mutant form of B19-NS1, and detected the expressions of autoantigens by various autoantibodies agai
