Three child mummies from the Graeco-Roman Period (332 BCE - c. 395 CE) were examined using CT scans and 3D visualizations generated with Vitrea 2 and MIMICS graphic workstations with the aim of comparing the results with previous X-ray examinations performed by Dawson and Gray in 1968. Although the previous analyses reported that the children had been excerebrated and eviscerated, no evidence of incisions or breaches of the cranial cavity were found; 3D visualizations were generated showing the brain and the internal organs to be in situ. A larger number of skeletal post-mortem damages were id

BACKGROUND: Supernumerary teeth are an alteration of dental developmental and result in the formation of teeth above the usual number. Epidemiologic studies suggested that patients with dentofacial anomalies and their family members may present an increased risk of developing cancer, including female breast cancer and gynecologic cancers. These observations indicate that genetic alterations that result in dental anomalies may be related to cancer development. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between supernumerary teeth and a family history of female breast can

The aim of this study was to introduce a novel method of mesiodens extraction using a vascularized pedicled bone flap by piezosurgery and to compare the differences between a computer-aided design surgical guide template and free-hand operation.A total of 8 patients with mesiodens, 4 with a surgical guide (group I), and 4 without it (group II) were included in the study. The surgical design was to construct a trapdoor pedicle on the superior mucoperiosteal attachment with application of piezosurgery. The bone lid was repositioned after mesiodens extraction. Group I patients underwent surgeries

This study reports on a retrospective survey of 1001 panoramic radiographs in a dental school population of persons with impacted third molars. The objective was to determine the association between pathologic conditions visible on radiographs and third molar teeth. In the series 2872 impacted third molars were examined. The most common problem seen radiolucencies. Other than caries, occurrence rates were low. Statistically significant differences in occurrences rates were seen within and between jaws for various pathologic conditions. The low rates did not offer support for the likely presenc

In mixed and early permanent dentitions, median diastema can be a major esthetic concern for patients and/or their parents. The space can be transient or created by developmental, pathological, or iatrogenic factors. Different treatment techniques have been proposed to manage the situation. This paper reviews the common causes of median diastema and presents four cases to illustrate a range of restorative and orthodontic options.

RATIONALE: Supernumerary teeth are those that teeth in excess number than the normal count. It is usually associated with genetic syndromes when present in more numbers. Several causal genes, such as APC, NHS, TRPS1, EVC and RUNX2, have been identified. However, etiology of supernumerary teeth remains largely unclear.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A family with the clinical diagnosis of supernumerary teeth, short stature and craniofacial dysplasia was examined.
DIAGNOSES: Molecular genetic analysis found that mutation occurred in the RUNX2 gene. On the basis of this finding and clinical manifestations,

BACKGROUND: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a dominantly inherited autosomal disease characterized by typical bone defects including short stature, persistently open or delayed closure of the cranial sutures, and hypoplastic or aplastic clavicles. Oral features are frequent and include supernumerary teeth, delayed eruption or impaction of the permanent teeth, and malocclusion. Heterozygous mutations in RUNX2 gene, which encodes a transcription factor essential for osteoblast differentiation, were identified as the etiological cause of CCD.

PURPOSE: We revisited 42 families with two or more cleft-affected siblings who participated in previous studies. Complete dental information was collected to test the hypothesis that dental anomalies are part of the cleft phenotype spectrum, and can provide new opportunities for identification of cleft susceptibility genes.
METHODS: Genotypes from 1489 single nucleotide polymorphism markers located in 150 candidate genes/loci were reanalyzed. Two sets of association analyses were carried out. First, we ran the analysis solely on the cleft status. Second, we assigned affection to any cleft or
