ABI-auditory brainstem implant.

The Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) is based on the classic cochlear implant (CI) but uses a different stimulation electrode. At MED-EL, the early development activities on ABI started in the year 1994, with the suggestion coming from J. Helms and J. Müller from Würzburg, Germany in collaboration with the Univ. of Innsbruck Austria. The first ABI surgery in a neuro-fibromatosis (NF2) patient with the MED-EL device took place in the year 1997. Later, the indication of ABI was expanded to non-NF2 patients with severe inner-ear malformation, for whom a regular CI will not be beneficial. Key tran

NESH (Abi-3) is present in the Abi/WAVE complex but does not promote c-Abl-mediated phosphorylation.

Abl interactor (Abi) was identified as an Abl tyrosine kinase-binding protein and subsequently shown to be a component of the macromolecular Abi/WAVE complex, which is a key regulator of Rac-dependent actin polymerization. Previous studies showed that Abi-1 promotes c-Abl-mediated phosphorylation of Mammalian Enabled (Mena) and WAVE2. In addition to Abi-1, mammals possess Abi-2 and NESH (Abi-3). In this study, we compared the three Abi proteins in terms of the promotion of c-Abl-mediated phosphorylation and the formation of Abi/WAVE complex. Although Abi-2, like Abi-1, promoted the c-Abl-media

Phytochemistry, Biological, and Pharmacological Properties of Abies alba Mill.

Abies alba Mill. (Pinaceae), silver fir, is a widespread gymnosperm species in Europe, important for its ecological, economic, social, and cultural significance, as well as for its use for food and bioremediation purposes. The various parts of the plant (leaves, branches, cones, wood, bark) are also of pharmaceutical interest due to their composition of active compounds. In the last three decades, an impressive amount of research has been dedicated to this species. The variability of the chemical composition of essential oils (whether they come from leaves, oleoresin from branches, or other pa

In vitro activities of rifamycin derivatives ABI-1648 (Rifalazil, KRM-1648), ABI-1657, and ABI-1131 against Chlamydia trachomatis and recent clinical isolates of Chlamydia pneumoniae.

ABI-1648 (rifalazil) is a semisynthetic rifamycin with potent bactericidal activity against intracellular respiratory bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and a long half-life (approximately 60 h) and thus can be administered once weekly. We therefore tested the in vitro activities of ABI-1648, its derivatives ABI-1657 and ABI-1131, azithromycin, and levofloxacin against 10 strains of Chlamydia trachomatis and 10 recent clinical isolates of Chlamydia pneumoniae. The MICs at which 90% of the isolates were inhibited and the minimal bactericidal concentration at which 90% of the isolat

Virtual ABI: A computationally derived ABI index for noninvasive assessment of femoro-popliteal bypass surgery outcome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Peripheral arterial disease of the lower limbs, which affects 12-14% of the population, is often treated by bypassing a blocked portion of the vessel. Due to the limited ability of clinicians to predict the outcome of a selected bypass strategy, the five-year graft occlusion ranges from 50% to 90%, with a 20% risk of amputation in the first 5 years after the surgery. The aim of this study was to develop a computational procedure that could enable surgeons to reduce negative effects by assessing patient-specific response to the available surgical strategies. METHODS:

The NESH/Abi-3-based WAVE2 complex is functionally distinct from the Abi-1-based WAVE2 complex.

BACKGROUND: Abl interactor (Abi) family proteins play significant roles in actin cytoskeleton organization through participation in the WAVE complex. Mammals possess three Abi proteins: Abi-1, Abi-2, and NESH/Abi-3. Abi-1 and Abi-2 were originally identified as Abl tyrosine kinase-binding proteins. It has been disclosed that Abi-1 acts as a bridge between c-Abl and WAVE2, and c-Abl-mediated WAVE2 phosphorylation promotes actin remodeling. We showed previously that NESH/Abi-3 is present in the WAVE2 complex, but neither binds to c-Abl nor promotes c-Abl-mediated phosphorylation of WAVE2. RESUL

Phytochemical investigation of the needles of Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei.

Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei (Pinaceae) is a species living in a very small population only in a confined area of Sicily. In this study, the dichloromethane extract of the leaves was analyzed. Apart from three already known metabolites namely dehydroabietic acid; maltol; and rheosmin, previously detected in other species of Abies, a lanostane derivative was isolated. Its chemical structure was elucidated by means of extensive spectroscopic methods.

Interaction between silver fir (Abies alba) wood water extract and lactobacilli.

Water extract from silver fir (Abies alba) wood represents a rich source of lignans and other phenols that are effective in different pathological conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and psoriasis. Its interaction with the gastrointestinal environment is crucial when the extract is orally administered. In this study we tested the in-vitro interaction between water extract of silver fir wood and ten different Lactobacillus species that are found in the gastrointestinal tract, vagina or are used in food industry. We tested both ways of interaction: 1) the bacterial influence on

The experiences of wives following acquired brain injury (ABI). A qualitative analysis exploring realisations of change following the ABI of a "loved one.".

The experiences of family members following Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) are well established, with spouses in particular facing multiple relational and personal changes. Qualitative studies have analysed accounts pertaining to a range of sequelae, however, "change" itself has yet to be addressed. This study explored the experiences of realisation of change for married women living with their husbands following ABI. Nine participants took part in semi-structured interviews focussing on becoming aware of changes in both their spouse and themselves post-injury. An Interpretative Phenomenological

Regulation of cell-cell adhesion by Abi/Diaphanous complexes.

Actin polymerization provides the driving force for the formation of cell-cell junctions and is mediated by two types of actin nucleators, Arp2/3 and formins. Proteins required for coordinately linking cadherin-mediated adhesion to Arp2/3-dependent versus formin-dependent nucleation have yet to be defined. Here we show a role for Abi, the Abi-binding partner Nap1, and the Nap1-binding protein Sra1 in the regulation of cadherin-dependent adhesion. We found that Abi, which is known to interact with Wave, leading to activation of the Arp2/3 complex, is also capable of interacting with the Diaphan

Abi activates WASP to promote sensory organ development.

Actin polymerization is a key process for many cellular events during development. To a large extent, the formation of filamentous actin is controlled by the WASP and WAVE proteins that activate the Arp2/3 complex in different developmental processes. WAVE function is regulated through a protein complex containing Sra1, Kette and Abi. Using biochemical, cell biological and genetic tools, we show here that the Abi protein also has a central role in activating WASP-mediated processes. Abi binds WASP through its carboxy-terminal domain and acts as a potent stimulator of WASP-dependent F-actin for

Hybrid Resins Derived from Abies alba Exudate as Matrices for Composite Materials.

This study investigates the utilization of Abies alba exudate resin for the development of hybrid resins intended as matrices for composite materials. The novelty of this work lies in demonstrating that physically hybridized, bio-derived resin systems based on Abies alba exudate can exhibit distinct mechanical and dynamic behaviors solely by adjusting the solvent-assisted formulation route, without intentional chemical modification and without spectroscopic evidence of co-network formation within the limits of ATR-FTIR analysis, although limited interfacial interactions cannot be excluded. Abies holophylla Leaf Essential Oil Alleviates Allergic Rhinitis Based on Network Pharmacology.

Abies holophylla is an evergreen coniferous species that has been widely used for treating pulmonary diseases and colds. Previous research has demonstrated the anti-inflammatory effect of Abies species and the anti-asthmatic activities of Abies holophylla leaf essential oil (AEO). As asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) share pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutic interventions, AEO inhalation can also ameliorate upper respiratory allergic diseases. This study explored the protective effects of AEO on AR with network pharmacological pathway prediction. The potential target pathways of AEO were a
