Electromyographic (EMG) recordings of the reticulum, abomasal corpus, pyloric antrum and duodenum of six dairy cows with left displacement of the abomasum (LDA) were made in order to substantiate abomasal atony as a prerequisite to abomasal displacement. EMG recordings were made when LDA was present as well as when absent. The histological development of the bovine abomasum during fetal and neonatal periods was studied. Right displaced abomasum (RDA) and abomasal volvulus (AV) are common diseases in cattle. However, presently there is no consensus regarding the pathogenesis and nomenclature of the different positions that the abomasum can adopt in the right side of the cow. High-concentrate diets apparently inhibit abomasal motility by increasing the amount of volatile fatty acids (VFFA) which enter the abomasum. The goal of this study was to determine whether Helicobacter pylori or similar bacteria are present in the abomasum of cows. The abomasa of 112 clinically healthy cows were examined at slaughter. This paper describes an abomasal body-antral excitatory reflex in acute experiments in sheep anaesthetized with chloralose. The abomasum was either surgically intact or acutely transected to form separate compartments of the abomasal body and antrum.
