Coping with academic failure, a study of Dutch children with dyslexia.

This paper reports the results of a study of strategies that Dutch children with dyslexia employ to cope with recurrent academic failure. All of the students in the study had developed strategies for protecting their self-esteem. Using Harter's theory of coping with discrepancies between performance and standards, we distinguish four strategies: (1) working hard and committing to standards, (2) lowering standards, (3) seeking support from significant others (i.e. parents and teachers), and (4) avoiding comparisons with significant others (i.e. peers). Although self-talk emerged as an important

Academic Failure and Child-to-Parent Violence: Family Protective Factors.

A reduction in academic achievement over the course of adolescence has been observed. School failure is characterized by difficulties to teaching school goals. A variety of other behavioral problems are often associated with school failure. Child-to-parent violence has been associated with different school problems. The main objective of current study was to examine the contribution of family variables (parental education level, family cohesion, and positive family discipline) on academic failure and child-to-parent violence of adolescents from a community sample. Moreover, a goal was to explo

How to optimize the prescription of laboratory tests? Success and failures in an academic hospital.

In the context of the flat-rate reimbursements in healthcare, we reviewed physicians' behavior towards laboratory test ordering. We demonstrated how it could be improved when a specific stage of the patient management is considered. We took a multi-step approach to analyze the laboratory test orders in the context of planned laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a general teaching hospital. A reference order set was defined through a collaborative analysis between clinicians and laboratory physicians. The clinical and financial impacts were then evaluated over a period of 24 months. After the introd

Academic success or failure in nursing students: results of a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing student academic failure is a phenomenon of growing international interest, not only because of its economic impact but also because it negatively affects the availability of future nurses in different healthcare systems. To recruit the students with the highest probability of academic success, an open challenge for universities is to recruit students who have previously demonstrated superior scholastic aptitudes that appear to be associated with a greater likelihood of academic success. Documenting the relationship between the selection methods used when selecting nursing

Reciprocal associations among fear of failure, academic buoyancy, and academic procrastination in primary school students: a three-wave cross-lagged panel study.

Academic procrastination is common in late elementary school and is associated with lower academic achievement and poorer well-being. Drawing on achievement motivation theory, the Study Demands-Resources (SD-R) framework, academic buoyancy theory, and Conservation of Resources theory, this three-wave longitudinal study examined reciprocal associations among fear of failure, academic buoyancy, and academic procrastination in Grade 5-6 students (N = 542). Participants completed self-report measures of fear of failure, academic buoyancy, and academic procrastination at three time points across on

Extrinsic and intrinsic factors in graduation and academic failure among LD college students.

A group of 110 LD college students were compared to a random stratified sample (RSS) of 153 peers attending the same moderately selective college between 1980 and 1988. The LD students received comprehensive, highly coordinated support services for at least one semester. The groups were matched on gender, college experience, semester, and year of entry to the college. The LD and RSS groups were compared on high school preparation and performance, ACT and college performance, and graduation and academic failure rate. Although the LD students' high school records, ACT scores, and college perform

Screen use, sleep duration, daytime somnolence, and academic failure in school-aged adolescents.

In this study, we examined the relationship between screen time use, sleep characteristics, daytime somnolence, and academic performance in school-aged adolescents. We surveyed 1,257 12- to 18-year-old adolescents attending 52 schools in urban or suburban areas of Argentina. We recorded the daily exposure to various screen-based activities, including video- and online-gaming, social media, TV or streaming. Screen time and device type in the hour before bedtime, sleep patterns during weekdays and weekends, somnolence (Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale score), and grades in language and mathema

Parental Socialization of Academic Failure and Adolescent School Burnout: The Mediating Role of Failure Mindset and Moderating Role of Learning Orientations.

School burnout is an important developmental concern during adolescence, yet less is known about the role of parent socialization, particularly in response to adolescent academic failure, in the development of school burnout over time. More specifically, limited research has examined how different forms of parental failure socialization contribute to adolescents' failure-related mindsets and how adolescents' own learning motivations may condition these associations. Using three-wave longitudinal data from 806 Chinese parent-adolescent dyads (Adolescents: Mage = 13.92 years, SD = 0.66; 53% fema

The role of fear of failure in the relationship between the Dark Triad personality traits and academic burnout.

Academic burnout is a growing concern among Dutch university students, with research suggesting that 59% of them experience such symptoms. This study investigated the relationship between the Dark Triad traits - psychopathy, grandiose narcissism, vulnerable narcissism, and Machiavellianism - and academic burnout, examining fear of failure as a potential mediator and gender as a moderator. It was hypothesized that all traits, except grandiose narcissism, would be positively associated with academic burnout. Moreover, it was expected that fear of failure will be a potential mediator in the effec

Aetiology and outcome of acute hepatic failure in Greece: experience of two academic hospital centres.

Introduction: In Western countries, the most frequent aetiology of acute liver failure (ALF) is acetaminophen overdose, while in developing countries viral infections [hepatitis A virus and hepatitis B virus (HBV)] predominate. Aim: To evaluate the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, outcome and prognostic factors of survival of patients with ALF in Greece during the last 6 years. Results: A total of 40 patients, 28 females (70%), with a median age of 37.4+/-18.6 years (range: 15-84) with ALF were studied. HBV infection was the cause in 53% of them (compared with 74% from a previous study

A model of school problems, academic failure, alcohol initiation, and the relationship to adult heroin injection.

The current study uses structural equation modeling to investigate factors associated with alcohol initiation and injection heroin use. Baseline data from the NEURO-HIV Epidemiologic Study in Baltimore, Maryland, were used. Participants were 404 injection heroin users (M(age) = 32.72) with a history of regular injection in their lifetime. Latent variables were created for self-reported school problems and academic failure. The final model indicated that greater school problems were associated with earlier alcohol initiation (ß = -0.22, p < .001) and earlier alcohol initiation was associated wi

Risk of Treatment Failure in Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy From an Academic Medical Center in Kentucky.

BACKGROUND: Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) has many benefits, yet factors contributing to treatment failure are not well understood. This study aimed to identify risk factors for OPAT failure by comparing successful patients to those failing therapy. METHODS: Adult patients referred and discharged to receive OPAT in the home from August 2019 and May 2021 were included. Patients were excluded if they received OPAT at a nonhome location or had creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min. Patient demographics, as well as admission-related information, were collected. The primary

Evaluation of aldosterone antagonist utilization in heart failure with reduced and preserved ejection fraction at an academic medical center.

BACKGROUND: Aldosterone antagonists (AA) have historically been underutilized despite evidence that they reduce morbidity, mortality, and readmission rates to the hospital when used appropriately. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if AAs were being prescribed in accordance with the 2013 ACCF/AHA guidelines and if there was any benefit surrounding 30-day readmissions or 30-day mortality for patients taking AAs with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of adult patients

The systemic breach of AI in academic publishing: Infrastructural failures and authorial misconduct across seven major publishers.

In academic publishing, there is a crisis that is both authorial and infrastructural; however, the discussion around the topic is heavily skewed toward the former rather than the latter. This paper presents an empirical map of both issues. Using a convenience sample of N = 323 retracted articles obtained from the Retraction Watch Database from seven of the major publishers: Springer Nature, Elsevier, Wiley, SAGE, Taylor & Francis, Emerald, and MDPI, we have used a mixed methods approach, namely, qualitative content analysis of the retraction notices and quantitative reporting of the coded freq

The effects of perceived daily social and academic failure experiences on school-age children's subsequent interactions with parents.

The hypothesis that perceived failure experiences at school would increase the likelihood of aversive parent-child interactions after school was supported in a study of 167 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Children completed measures of mood, school events, and parent-child interaction 3 times each day for 2 consecutive days. Reports of social and academic failure experiences at school (e.g., peer problems and difficulty with schoolwork) were associated with increases in child self-reports of demanding and aversive behavior toward parents that evening. There was no evidence of the reverse eff

Use and Discontinuation of Milrinone for Advanced Heart Failure in an Academic Palliative Care Unit: A Case Report and Discussion of Recommendations.

The use of intravenous inotropic medications in advanced heart failure (HF) has been shown to improve symptoms and decrease hospitalizations, prompting support for their use as a palliative measure for symptom management. Recommendations regarding inotrope management and method of discontinuation at the end of life are not specifically detailed in the literature and current guidelines. This case report describes the use of milrinone in a patient with advanced HF during the terminal phase of illness in a non-monitored palliative care unit setting, including dose reduction and discontinuation of

Longitudinal Impact of Perfectionism on Suicidal Ideation among Chinese College Students with Perceived Academic Failure: The Roles of Rumination and Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide has become a nonnegligible cause of death among emerging adults, and academic performance is one of the most significant factors in Chinese college students' suicidal ideation. Based on this, we examined the risk and protective sides of perfectionism on suicidal ideation among college students with perceived academic failure experiences. METHOD: In the current study, a total of 674 Chinese college students (63.6% females, Mage = 19.96, SD = 1.31) with perceived academic failure in the past six months participated in a survey and completed self-report measures assessing perf

Variation in academic medical centers' coding practices for postoperative respiratory complications: implications for the AHRQ postoperative respiratory failure Patient Safety Indicator.

BACKGROUND: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety Indicator (PSI) 11 uses International Classification of Disease, 9th Clinical Modification diagnosis code 518.81 ("Acute respiratory failure")-but not the closely related alternative, 518.5 ("Pulmonary insufficiency after trauma and surgery")-to detect cases of postoperative respiratory failure. We sought to determine whether hospitals vary in the use of 518.81 versus 518.5 and whether such variation correlates with coder beliefs. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of administrative data from July 200
