Atopic Dermatitis and Academic Performance.

IMPORTANCE: Atopic dermatitis (AD) may impair school performance through sleep disturbance, comorbidities, or psychosocial effects; however, population-based longitudinal evidence is limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of AD with academic performance and whether this association is modified or confounded by disease phenotype and socioeconomic background. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Parallel, population-based cohort studies in Denmark and England, including children with or without AD. In Denmark, children born between 1986 and 2000 from nationwide linked registries were

Association of sleep and academic performance.

Poor school performance by adolescent students has been attributed in part to insufficient sleep. It is recognized that a number of factors lead to diminished total sleep time and chief among these are early school start times and sleep phase delay in adolescence. Political initiatives are gaining momentum across the United States to require later school start times with the intent of increasing total sleep time and consequently improving school performance. Later school start times come with significant costs and impact other activities of families and communities. The decision to implement l

Academic selection criteria and subsequent performance.

In this paper we have attempted to determine if there are any aspects of the academic history of a student, prior to admission to the University of Leicester medical course, that correlate with his or her subsequent performance in that course. The analyses presented suggest that a student's overall performance in GCE O- and A-level examinations correlates with subsequent performance at various stages of the medical course. In addition, there is a correlation between performance in the medical course and performance in A-level chemistry and biology but not mathematics, physics or general studie

Sleep quality, sleep propensity and academic performance.

We examined associations between measures of sleep propensity on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, sleep quality on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and academic performance by GPA and grades in introductory psychology for 414 students. In the total sample, neither sleep propensity nor sleep quality correlated with GPA or introductory psychology grades. However, among students carrying a full course load, those reporting poor sleep quality performed less well on academic measures than those reporting a better quality of sleep. Further research is needed to assess the moderating influence of over

To be a professor: Academic mobility and publishing performance.

Many aspiring academics target a professorship, but only some succeed. This study examines academic market concentration and its consequences in a post-communist country. We analyzed the field of economic sciences over a 22-year period, combining official data on the appointment process with manually collected data on applicants' publishing performance in the Czech Republic. Using correlation and linear regression analyses, we investigated whether the mobility of candidates for full professorships is related to their research productivity and research visibility. Our findings revealed low migr

Predicting academic and National Board Dental Hygiene Examination performance based on Academic Factors.

PURPOSE: Numerous studies have explored reliable variables that predict student success in dental hygiene programs and on the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE). However, no studies were found using data collected since the NBDHE format changed in 1998 to investigate if traditional predictors hold true. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between pre-admission requirements, basic college science requirements, site of academic preparation, cumulative dental hygiene grade point average (CDHYGPA) and the NBDHE score. METHODS: Data from the academic records

Brain structure links trait conscientiousness to academic performance.

In the long history of identifying factors to predict academic performance, conscientiousness, a so-called 'big five' personality trait describing self-regulation and goal-directed behavior, has emerged as a stable predictor for this purpose. However, the neuroanatomical substrates of trait conscientiousness and the underlying brain mechanism linking trait conscientiousness and academic performance are still largely unknown. Here, we examined these issues in 148 high school students within the same grade by estimating cortical gray matter volume (GMV) utilizing a voxel-based morphometry method

Simulated astigmatism impairs academic-related performance in children.

PURPOSE: Astigmatism is an important refractive condition in children. However, the functional impact of uncorrected astigmatism in this population is not well established, particularly with regard to academic performance. This study investigated the impact of simulated bilateral astigmatism on academic-related tasks before and after sustained near work in children. METHODS: Twenty visually normal children (mean age: 10.8 ± 0.7 years; six males and 14 females) completed a range of standardised academic-related tests with and without 1.50 D of simulated bilateral astigmatism (with both academi

[Private education and academic performance among medical students].

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of Norwegian medical students have some private education behind them. The question raised here is whether the educational performance of these students is lower than that of other students. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis is based on data from the National Educational Database, which includes information on the total population. The dependent variable is grades obtained early in medical training. The impact of private education is estimated by linear regression models. The analysis controls for time between completing secondary school and entering medical sc

Vision and academic performance of learning disabled children.

The purpose of this study was to assess difference in academic performance among myopic, hyperopic, and emmetropic children who were learning disabled. More specifically, myopic children were expected to perform better on mathematical and spatial tasks than would hyperopic ones and that hyperopic and emmetropic children would perform better on verbal measures than would myopic ones. For 439 learning disabled students visual anomalies were determined via a Generated Retinal Reflex Image Screening System. Test data were obtained from school files. Partial support for the hypothesis was obtained.

The impact of adolescent innovation on academic resilience, distance learning self-efficacy, and academic performance.

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced considerable challenges for adolescents as they adapted to the demands of remote learning, necessitating effective strategies to sustain their academic engagement and performance. This study investigates the relationship between adolescents' self-perceived innovativeness and their academic resilience, confidence in managing distance learning, and overall academic performance. Using data from a sample of 906 Chinese middle and high school students, the study identifies three primary findings: adolescents with higher levels of self-perceived innovativeness tend t

Abuse and empowerment in the academic field on the academic performance of medical students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Academic abuse remains a concerning and under-recognized factor affecting medical students' well-being and academic achievement. Empowerment, on the other hand, may mitigate negative experiences and enhance performance. This study aimed to examine the relationship between academic abuse, empowerment, and academic performance among medical students in a Latin American setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 255 medical students at a private university in Lima, Peru. Participants were selected using stratified sampling by year of study. Formation of homophily in academic performance: Students change their friends rather than performance.

Homophily, the tendency of individuals to associate with others who share similar traits, has been identified as a major driving force in the formation and evolution of social ties. In many cases, it is not clear if homophily is the result of a socialization process, where individuals change their traits according to the dominance of that trait in their local social networks, or if it results from a selection process, in which individuals reshape their social networks so that their traits match those in the new environment. Here we demonstrate the detailed temporal formation of strong homophil

Individual Differences in Learning and Cessation Predict Academic Performance.

Most research on learning emphasizes knowledge learning, yet an equally important skill is knowing when to stop. This study examined learning cessation-when to disengage from further attempts once performance has stabilized-and its relation to academic performance. A sample of 183 undergraduates completed three perceptual discrimination problems varying in solvability and mastery criteria. Performance curves were analyzed by measuring error rates, allowing for the measurement of performance within the learning and cessation phases. Learners demonstrated wide variability across all three proble

Academic performance and associated factors among female university students.

BACKGROUND: Education serves as a vital instrument for empowering citizens to engage fully in the development process. However, various factors can impact the quality and competency of female students in higher education. In Ethiopian institutions, the proportion of female students is significantly lower than that of their male counterparts, highlighting the unique challenges faced by females that can hinder their academic success. Understanding these challenges and the factors influencing female academic performance is essential for enhancing educational outcomes and promoting greater equity
