This study was designed to investigate the protective effects of the polysaccharide isolated from Tarphochlamys affinis (PTA) against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Liver injury was induced in rats by the administration of CCl4 twice a week for 2 weeks. During the experiment, the model group received CCl4 only; the treatment groups received various drugs plus CCl4, whereas the normal control group received an equal volume of saline. Compared with the CCl4 group, PTA significantly decreased the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline pho

Recent research towards a revision of Neotropical Mendoncia has confirmed the existence of a new species growing in the semideciduous seasonal forest (mata de planalto) component of the Atlantic Forest. As became evident from fieldwork carried out in Southeastern Brazil and following the study of numerous herbarium specimens, the new species is distinct from M.velloziana, from the coastal and septentrional ombrophilous forests, due to its golden-green bracteoles, densely pubescent ovary and puberulous fruits. A description of the new species is provided, along with a distribution map, conserva

Background: Thunbergia alata is employed in traditional medicine to treat culture-bound syndromes such as "susto" (fright) or "espanto" (fearfulness). These conditions may correlate with depressive disorders. However, there is no evidence that this species has antidepressant properties. Aims: To characterize the antidepressant-like effect of an aqueous extract of T. alata in different paradigms and to analyze the role of brain monoamines in such actions. Methods: Independent groups of mice were treated with saline or the extract (1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 mg/kg; p.o.) and evaluated in the tail sus

The evolution of microbes in response to conventional antimicrobials leads to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and multidrug resistance (MDR), and it is a global threat to public health. Natural products are possible solutions to this massive challenge. In this study, the potential of Acanthus polystachyus extracts was investigated for phytochemical composition and biological properties as antimicrobials. Gas chromatography-mass spectra (GC-MS) analysis of methanol extract (ME) and essential oil (EO) detected 79 and 20 compounds, respectively. The major compounds identified in ME and their abund
