The typical clinical appearance of acanthamoeba keratitis includes pseudodendritic epitheliopathy, perineuritis, ring infiltrates or multifocal stromal infiltrates and in some cases limbitis with infiltration of the conjunctiva and/or sterile anterior uveitis. In 83-93 % of cases of acanthamoeba keratitis the patients were contact lens wearers. Acanthamoeba keratitis is diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), confocal biomicroscopy, in vitro cultivation and histopathological examination. Information on reliability and efficacy of conservative and surgical therapy of acanthamoeba keratiti

Acanthamoeba species are an important cause of microbial keratitis that may cause severe ocular inflammation and visual loss. The first cases were recognized in 1973, but the disease remained very rare until the 1980s, when an increase in incidence mainly associated with contact lens wear was reported. There is an increased risk when contact lens rinsing and soaking solutions are prepared with nonsterile water and salt tablets. The clinical picture is often characterized by severe pain with an early superficial keratitis that is often treated as herpes simplex infection. Subsequently a charact

Acanthamoeba keratitis has become a clinical problem together with the widespread use of soft and rigid contact lenses. The number of cases with this kind of infection is growing, but many of cases are diagnosed too late or misdiagnosed. The authors presented, for the first time in Polish literature, a case of acanthamoeba keratitis concerning a 62 aged man. The disease was diagnosed in the right aphakic eye after a 5-year use of soft contact lens, just after cataract operation performed in the clinic in the left eye.

1. Acanthamoeba keratitis is an uncommon but increasingly prevalent infection with the potential to cause severe ocular damage. Acanthamoeba is a nonflagellated free-living amoeba that is ubiquitous in the environment. The most common type is A castellani, but A polyphagia, A rhysodes, A culbertson, and A hatchetti have been isolated from infected eyes. 2. Clinical features include foreign body sensation, blurred vision, tearing, and photophobia. There is minimal pain in the early stages of infection, but severe pain is a manifestation of the advanced stages of the disease. 3. The incidence of

In seventeen patients who suffered of corneal ulcer, and were negative in bacteriological and mycological examinations, parasitological tests were performed between 1990-1992. Acanthamoeba keratitis was diagnosed in one patient with characteristic corneal changes of right eye following trauma. The patient was not a contact lens wearer. The amoeba found in direct smears of scraping from corneal ulcer and isolated and cloned in in vitro conditions (isolate-clone-No. 2961) belonged to Acanthamoeba polyphaga species. The trophozoites showed a low degree of invasiveness and high virulence when test

Early diagnosis and appropriate therapy are key elements for a good prognosis in Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). AK should be considered in any case of corneal trauma complicated by exposure to soil or contaminated water, and in all contact lens (CL) wearers. A presumptive diagnosis of AK can be made clinically and with in vivo confocal microscopy, although a definitive diagnosis requires identification of Acanthamoeba on direct scraping, histology, or identification of Acanthamoeba DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We use cysticidal drugs for treating AK because encysted forms are more res

Acanthamoeba keratitis, common in soft lens wearers, is not commonly isolated. The reports of Acanthamoeba keratitis in Indian literature are few. We report here a case of Acanthamoeba Keratitis in a medical student using soft contact lenses, initially diagnosed and treated as a bacterial and later as a viral corneal ulcer, who responded extremely well to medical line of therapy.

A 41-year-old woman underwent a corneal transplant in her right eye because of a nonhealing ulcer. The graft failed within weeks of surgery and was eventually removed. Both the primary host cornea and the failed graft contained numerous Acanthamoeba cysts and trophozoites. Awareness of the causes of infectious keratitis should increase the likelihood of establishing the correct diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Acanthamoeba keratitis is a severe, painful corneal infection found in contact lens wearers. The entity can easily be confused with herpetic or fungal keratitis, especially if no ocular pain is reported.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 32-year old myopic female presented a unilateral keratitis of unknown etiology since 3 weeks. Administration of topical antiviral substances and corticosteroids led only to temporary improvement of the condition. The patient complained of photophobia but not of ocular pain. The affected eye showed corneal edema, central stromal thickening, descemet's striae as

BACKGROUND: Given the protracted clinical course, diagnostic difficulties, frequent treatment failures and the increasing incidence, keratitis caused by free-living acanthamoeba represents a clinical challenge.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 37-year-old healthy female who wore gas-permeable contact lenses for ten years developed bilateral keratouveitis, pseudodentritic subepithelial infiltrates and corneal ring ulcers. Cultures were obtained from corneal scrapings, contact lenses and storage container. Medical treatment during the clinical course included propamidine isethionate, miconazole, ketocona

PURPOSE: To report fungal infection complicating Acanthamoeba keratitis.
METHODS: Case report. A 45-year-old woman with contact lens-related bilateral Acanthamoeba keratitis developed corneal ulcer, corneal perforation, and mature cataract in the left eye, which was managed by penetrating keratoplasty, lensectomy, and vitrectomy.
RESULTS: Histopathologic examination of the keratoplasty specimen from the left eye revealed extensive lamellar stromal necrosis with the coexistence of both empty cysts and branching hyphae. Cultures from the keratoplasty specimen grew Scedosporium apiospermum.

This is a comprehensive review after a thorough literature search in PubMed-indexed journals, incorporating current information on the pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis, medical and surgical therapy, as well as outcomes of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). AK is a significant cause of ocular morbidity, and early diagnosis with timely institution of appropriate therapy is the key to obtaining good outcomes. The varied presentations result in frequent misdiagnosis, and co-infections can increase the morbidity of the disease. The first line of therapy continues to be biguanides and diamidi

In recent years, Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) has became a clinically significant problem because of the broad use of contact lenses that are the major risk factor of the disease. The treatment presents considerable difficulties due to similarity of clinical manifestations of AK to other keratites (bacterial, herpetic, and fungal). This often leads to late diagnosis and formation of drug-resistant cysts. There is currently no specific drug universally suitable for monotherapy of AK. Instead, 2 agents (usually chlorhexidine and poligexametilen biguanide) are used that, if combined, are effective

PURPOSE: Acanthamoeba keratitis is a potentially blinding microbial disease that has been increasing in incidence during the past two decades. Prognosis of this serious disease had been dismal, but improvement in diagnosis, a better understanding of the natural course of the disease, and recent introduction of multiple and effective therapeutic agents have resulted in improvement of visual outcomes.
METHODS: A review of literature pertaining to Acanthamoeba keratitis.
RESULTS: Contact lens wear and exposure to contaminated water sources remain the most important risk factors; however, in viv

Acanthamoeba species are vision-threatening agents by causing cornea infections known as Acanthamoeba keratitis. A 5 year-old kid with the complaints of erythema, eyelid edema, inflammation, limitation of eye movements in the right eye, and having no history of wearing contact lenses or trauma, was diagnosed of Acanthamoeba conjunctivitis through laboratory examinations in the Ophthalmology clinic. The visual sharpness of the patient improved after the treatment. A 44 year-old female patient suffering from pain, stinging, irritation, and inability to see in the left eye with the history of wea

AIM: To investigate the frequency, outcomes, and risk factors for acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) in England during the past 4 years.
METHODS: An ophthalmologist in 12 of the 14 regional health authorities (RHAs) coordinated identification of patients in their region presenting with AK between 1 October 1992 and 30 September 1996. Clinical and postal patient questionnaire data were analysed.
RESULTS: 243 patients (259 eyes) with an AK diagnosis were identified, equating to an annualised incidence of 0.14 per 100,000 individuals. UK resident patients for each year numbered 50, 71, 73, and 32 resp

A 42-year-old woman was referred to an emergency department. She had an unresponsive corneal ulcer that was initially diagnosed as Herpes simplex virus keratitis. Later, the microbiological studies revealed fungal keratitis. Although the patient was given topical antifungal medication, the clinical presentation did not support improvement. Despite using antifungal medication, the infiltration continued to progress, and the patient underwent therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty (T-PKP). Corneal tissue was collected and sent for histopathologic and molecular examination. The results revealed the
