In this review recent morphological and histochemical descriptions have been compiled of (mainly outer) features of all developmental stages of the Acanthocephala as well as what is known about the host's defence measures directed against these worms. From acanthors, for instance, it is documented how they escape melanization inside the haemocoel of a suitable intermediate host after they have been activated and released from their eggshell enclosure in the gut of the arthropod. Acanthors possess a complex set of eggshell-envelopes and interstices that fulfil different tasks. While the sequenc

This study was carried out in order to identify acanthocephalan species complexes, based on morphological variability, infecting Barbonymus schwanenfeldii from Lake Kenyir, Terengganu, Malaysia. Acanthocephala were fixed in ethanol, stained with aceto-carmine and studied morphologically by using a light microscope. Variation in morphological traits such as proboscis, proboscis receptacle, egg, testes shape and location, number of hooks and cement gland has been traditionally used to diagnose the acanthocephalans species but the delimitations between closely related species are still confusing

Knowledge concerning the taxonomy and biology of species of Acanthocephala, helminth parasites of the helminth species of the phylum Acanthocephala, parasites of lizards in Brazilian Amazonia, is still insufficient, but reports of Acanthocephala in reptiles are becoming increasingly common in the literature. Cystacanth-stage Acanthocephalan larvae have been found in the visceral peritoneum during necropsy of Ameiva ameiva ameivalizards from the "Osvaldo Rodrigues da Cunha" Herpetology Collection of the Emílio Goeldi Museum, Belém, Pará, Brazil. The aim of this study was to present the morpholo

Acanthocephalans, in their adult stage, are obligatory parasites of many types of vertebrates, including anuran amphibians. Their complex life cycle always involves an arthropod intermediate host but may include non-obligatory strategies that could improve transmission success, such as paratenic infections. In paratenic hosts, these parasites are normally found loose in the body cavity or encysted in internal organs. Here, we present the first report of acanthocephalans found encysted under the skin of an amphibian (i.e., external to its body cavity). The specimen, a clay robber frog [Haddadus

In whole Moniliformis moniliformis spontaneous muscle contractions were rhythmic; longitudinal contractions were measured with a force transducer. The cholinergic agonists levamisole and nicotine significantly increased muscle tension in whole worms; these contractions were tonic and were antagonised by the ganglionic blocker pentolinium and by piperazine. In addition, levamisole-induced contractions were inhibited by gallamine, hexamethonium, and norepinephrine. In worm segments, where drugs in solution were injected through the worms, acetylcholine (ACh) and nicotinic agonists were effective

BACKGROUND: The Northern pike, Esox lucius, is a large, long-lived, top-predator fish species and occupies a broad range of aquatic environments. This species is on its way to becoming an important model organism and has the potential to contribute new knowledge and a better understanding of ecology and evolutionary biology. Very few studies have been done on the intestinal pathology of pike infected with helminths. The present study details the first Italian record of adult Acanthocephalus lucii reported in the intestine of E. lucius.
RESULTS: A total of 22 pike from Lake Piediluco (Central

Acanthocephaliasis is a zoonotic parasitic infection of vertebrates. The phylum Acanthocephala contains nearly 1500 acanthocephalan species. The Archiacanthocephala class is observed in terrestrial habitats and usually has a large, spineless trunk. Acanthocephalans are parasitic worms that use insects as intermediate hosts in their two-host life cycles. Insects, millipedes, and crustaceans in terrestrial areas serve as intermediate hosts and birds and mammals as definitive hosts. Acanthocephalans collected from the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) found dead on the road to Sarıkamış-Kars in 1995 and st

Examination of 1905 arthropods from a swamp and surrounding pasture in sothern Louisiana revealed larval specimens of Mediorhynchus centurorum in 8 of 228 woodroaches, Parcoblatta pensylvanica, but in no other species. The life cycle was confirmed by feeding eggs of M. centurorum to laboratory-reared woodroaches. Cystacanths later recovered from the woodroaches developed into mature worms when pipetted into esophaguses of red-bellied woodpeckers, Centurus carolinius: red-headed woodpeckers, Melanerpes erythrocephalus; yellow-shafted flickers, Colaptes auratus; and a hairy woodpecker, Dendrocop

Dead specimens of Corynosoma cetaceum were used to describe the trunk musculature of this species and to infer the use of the trunk as a secondary holdfast. Inferences were based on trunk muscle arrangement, changes in trunk shape, size and distribution of spines, and geometry of tegument thickness. The foretrunk of C. cetaceum is swollen and forms a spiny disk that is bent ventrally. The disk is flattened by several groups of muscles not described previously, which seem able to finely adjust the disk surface over the substratum. Disk attachment appears to be accomplished by two dorsal neck re

PURPOSE: The infection of brown trout (Salmo trutta) by the acanthocephalan parasite Echinorhynchus truttae is initiated by the ingestion of gammarid crustaceans harbouring the cystacanth form. Gammarus pulex has been reported as the common intermediate host of this parasite species. The absence of G. pulex in the rivers of Spain suggests that native gammarid species may play the role of intermediate host for E. truttae, which is the only acanthocephalan species reported in salmonids in this country. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether native gammarid species of Galician ri

BACKGROUND: Acanthocephalans of the genus Bolbosoma Porta, 1908 are trophically transmitted parasites that infect marine mammals (mostly cetaceans and less frequently pinnipeds) worldwide. There are 12 species currently considered as valid; however, most records lack information on the maturity stage of the specimens. This, coupled with the scarce phylogenetic information available, hinders a correct understanding of their patterns of host specificity, evolutionary history, and taxonomy. A particularly intriguing case is that of Bolbosoma vasculosum (Rudolphi, 1819), which has been frequently

Rats harbouring 35-day-old primary infections of Moniliformis moniliformis and Hymenolepis diminuta were inoculated with equal doses of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and were autopsied 10 days later. Significant reductions were found in the dry weight of Moniliformis and Hymenolepis and in the numbers of Nippostrongylus recovered compared with single infections. Similarly, in infections with two parasites, the numbers of Nippostrongylus were reduced when concurrent with Moniliformis and the dry weights of Moniliformis and Hymenolepis decreased in the presence of each other. A comparison of the

A case of small bowel obstruction caused by Bolbosoma sp. infection is reported. A 27-year-old woman admitted with abdominal pain was diagnosed as small bowel obstruction. Laparoscopic surgery revealed induration in jejunum at ca. 120 cm distal to the ligament of Treiz, attributed to a band connecting the serosa to the ascending mesocolon. Resected band contained an acanthocephalan accompanying foreign body reaction with abscess formation. The parasite belonged to the genus Bolbosoma, of which identification was made by DNA sequence analysis. This is the eighth case of Bolbosoma infection in h

We report the fauna of the Acanthocephala of 120 Patagonian blennies Eleginops maclovinus (Cuvier) from northern Patagonia, Argentina. A total of 535 acanthocephalans belonging to five species were collected and identified using light microscopy. Juvenile and adult forms were only observed for Hypoechinorhynchus magellanicus Szidat, 1950 (Arhythmacanthidae). Juvenile forms of Corynosoma australe Johnston, 1937, Corynosoma cetaceum Johnston et Best, 1942 and Corynosoma shackletoni Zdzitowiecki, 1978 (Polymorphidae) were found encapsulated in the mesenteries. Juveniles of Profilicollis chasmagna

We provide the first report of Acanthocephala ( Prosthenorchis elegans) in Mexican non-human primates. There has been no known treatment against this parasite except for surgical removal, and this has been relatively ineffective because of the small juveniles. We report the presence of P. elegans in a captive breeding colony of squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus) in Mexico, and we describe a successful treatment protocol. Treatment involved 2 steps: oral administration of the drugs loperamide chlorhydrate (0.5 mg/0.9 kg/3 days) and niclosamide (0.2 mg/0.9 kg/3 days) followed by surgical remov

The aim of this study was to record Centrorhynchus sp. associated with the exotic species Aquarana catesbeiana (bullfrog) in southern Brazil and to present a checklist of vertebrate hosts in South America. Twenty-nine adults and juveniles of A. catesbeiana were collected in Capão do Leão, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between October 2019 and December 2020. We found 275 specimens of Centrorhynchus sp. cystacanths in the stomach musculature and coelomic cavity of 55.1% of hosts (16). There was no significant differences in the prevalence and mean intensity of infection with cystacanths wh

The structure of the praesoma in the acanthocephalan Arhythmorhynchus teres Van Cleave, 1920 at the middle acanthella I stage has been examined by light and transmission electron microscopy methods. Acanthocephalan specimens were retrieved from naturally infected intermediate hosts, Bulychevia ochotensis (Brandt, 1851) (Amphipoda, Talitridae). In the studied acanthellae, the primordia of the proboscis receptacle, proboscis, circular muscles, proboscis retractor, and cerebral ganglion are clearly differentiated in the praesoma. The tegument contained giant nuclei arranged into annular rows orie

Pseudocorynosoma constrictum (Van Cleave, 1918) is a polymorphid acanthocephalan that attaches to the digestive tract of waterfowl to complete its life cycle, causing severe histological damage to its definitive avian hosts. In the present study, we present a histopathological analysis of the lesions that P. constrictum induced in the layers of the ileum of the blue-winged teal Anas discors. The results revealed that worms insert the attachment structures into the inner gut muscular layer, which causes substantial swelling, haemorrhaging and necrosis in the tissue near the parasite's proboscis
