The anatomy of the adult uropodid Fuscouropoda agitans (Arachnida; Acari), with comparative observations on other Acari.

A thin, compressible, lateral suture and ventral plate overlap permit limited movement of the thick and rigid dorsal and ventral plates of Fuscouropoda agitans. Seven pairs of large dermal glands debouch onto the surface. Trochanteral rotation permits defensive leg adpresion and an insectan type of ambulation. The complex hypopharynx-pedipalpal-coxae has a buccal and cheliceral cavity separated by an atriculated epipharynx. The pharynx is Y-shaped in cross section. Extensive paired salivary glands lie above the very long and dexterous 3-segmented chelicerae, and a large pair of coxal glands de

[Allergy to squid and acari in a child].

UNLABELLED: Anaphylactic reactions after consumption of squid by patients sensitized to house dust mites have been reported several times. CASE REPORT: A child allergic to dust mites developed an angioneurotic edema after eating squid. An immunoallergological assessment, including the prick test, labial test and IgE RAST revealed an allergy associated to both dust mites and squid. CONCLUSIONS: In light of the potential seriousness of anaphylactic reactions, parents of children allergic to dust mites and these children should be made aware of the increased risk of allergies to squid that they

Ixodes chilensis (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) in Argentina.

The aim of this note is to report the first record of Ixodes chilensis Kohl, 1956 in Argentina. In June 2023, ticks were collected on bat belonging to the genus Histiotus from Dina Huapí, Rio Negro Province, Patagonian region, Argentina. Based on morphological characteristics and analysis of an obtained partial 16S rDNA gene sequence, these ticks (five nymphs) were determined as I. chilensis. This result represents the first record of this tick species outside Chile and expands the knowledge of its geographical distribution in the southern cone of South America.

Genome size estimation and evolution trends in Acari.

Acari, including mites and ticks, pose significant challenges in agriculture, horticulture, and medicine. Among these, agricultural concerns are particularly critical, as many mite species directly affect crop health and productivity. The genome sizes of Acari vary widely, reflecting their diverse ecological roles and life history traits. This variation often corresponds to differences in reproductive strategies, parasitic behaviors, and adaptation to specific environments. Here, to better understand evolution trends in Acari, we (1) estimated the genome size of six mite species using flow cyt

Lack of parthenogenesis by Amblyomma cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae).

Some reproductive parameters of adult stages of Amblyomma cajennense ticks were studied. The capacity of virgin females to reproduce by parthenogenesis was evaluated, during an experimental infestation, in absence of males, on a horse (Equus cabalus). Ticks were spread either completely free or in limited sites on the body of the animal. The engorged virgin females showed longer feeding periods and lighter body weights than those that had been fertilized. Some of these unmated females produced smaller egg masses, which had no embryonary development. On the other hand, females that had been ins

A Proteomic Analysis of Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae).

The pruritic skin disease scabies is caused by the burrowing of the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer). It is difficult to diagnose this disease because its symptoms often resemble those of other skin diseases. No reliable blood or molecular diagnostic test is available. The aim of this project was to begin to characterize the scabies proteome to identify scabies mite proteins, including those that may be useful in the development of a diagnostic test or vaccine. Various scabies mite extracts were separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis, and 844 Coomassie Blue-stained protein spots wer

Raillietia caprae (Acari: Raillietidae) and Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae) in the ears of goats in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil.

Ear canals of 145 domestic goats including the breeds Saanen, Toggenburg, Anglobian, Alpine, Moxoto (native) and crossbred goats from 10 smallholder farms were examined by flushing for the presence of ear mites. Prevalence of Raillietia caprae Quintero, Bassols and Acevedo, 1980 was much more higher than Psoroptes ovis (Hering, 1838) in the studied area, respectively 62% (90/145) and 4% (6/145). The youngest animal parasitized was eight months old and the oldest was 10 years old. Subclinical otitis is a common feature of infestation by both species but increase of wax and the presence of pus w

Effect of temperature on life table parameters of the predatory soil mite Blattisocius mali (Acari: Blattisociidae) fed on Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Acari: Acaridae).

Temperature impacts the development, survival, and fecundity of edaphic predatory mites. This study examined the biological and life table parameters of the edaphic predatory mite Blattisocius mali (Oudemans) (Acari: Blattisociidae) feeding on Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Acari: Acaridae) at four different temperatures, 15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C. The developmental period, reproductive period, and adult longevity of B. mali shortened with rising temperature. The lower temperature threshold and thermal constant ranged between 13.02 and 13.73 °C, and 83.36-89.04 oD, respectively. Mate

Acaricidal activity of methanol extract of Acmella oleracea L. (Asteraceae) and spilanthol on Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) and Dermacentor nitens (Acari: Ixodidae).

We evaluated the acaricidal activity of Acmella oleracea methanol extract and spilanthol on Rhipicephalus microplus and Dermacentor nitens. The extract was made through maceration with methanol. From this extract, a dichloromethane fraction with 99% spilanthol was obtained and tested on R. microplus larvae and engorged females and D. nitens larvae. For evaluation against larvae, the modified larval packet test was used, and both the methanol extract and dichloromethane fraction were tested at concentrations of 0.2-50mg/mL. The modified larval packet test was also used in the lethal time (LT) t

Acetylcholinesterase 1 of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus (Say) [Acari: Ixodidae].

The cattle fever ticks Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1888) and Rhipicephalus annulatus (Say, 1821) transmit pathogens responsible for bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Although eradicated from the United States, these ticks and the pathogens they transmit are endemic in Mexico and other countries, and pose a serious risk to the U.S. cattle industry. Cattle imported into the U.S. are inspected and treated with an acaricide, coumaphos, to prevent tick reentry into the U.S. Coumaphos is an organophosphate (OP) that kills ticks by inactivating acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme vital

First record of Haemaphysalis concinna (Acari: Ixodidae) in Lithuania.

The relict tick Haemaphysalis concinna Koch, 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae) has high medical and veterinary importance as it is known as a vector or a carrier of various pathogens causing human and animal diseases. Haemaphysalis concinna is a widely distributed species in forests of temperate Eurasia. In Europe, it is found mainly in deciduous or mixed forests near shores of lakes or rivers. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about current distribution, relative density, and other ecological parameters of H. concinna. On June 30th, 2019, one specimen of H. concinna was found on the fur of a h

Integrative taxonomy of Afrotropical Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) (Acari: Ixodida: Argasidae).

Afrotropical Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) ticks are revised based on qualitative morphology of females and nymphs, as well as tarsus I shape outlines of females measured in a geometric morphometric framework. These lines of evidence corroborate lineages based on 16S rRNA nucleotide sequence data. Four previously unrecognized species are described, along with a revived nomen nudum that was previously considered a synonym. Afrotropical Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) now comprise ten species. Ornithodoros moubata and Ornithodoros porcinus are separated from three other species in southern Africa (Orn

New Wolbachia supergroups detected in quill mites (Acari: Syringophilidae).

Wolbachia is the most abundant intracellular bacterial genus infecting a wide range of arthropods and filarial nematodes. Wolbachia have evolved parasitic, mutualistic and commensal relationships with their hosts but in arthropods generally act as reproductive parasites, inducing a wide range of phenotypic effects such as cytoplasmic incompatibility, parthenogenesis, feminization and male-killing. Up to now, the genus has been divided into 14 supergroups successively named A-O. Here, we describe two new Wolbachia supergroups from syringophilid mites (Acari: Cheyletoidea).
