[Acceptance and commitment therapy].

INTRODUCTION: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a third generation of cognitive-behavioral therapies. The point is to help patients to improve their psychological flexibility in order to accept unavoidable private events. Thus, they have the opportunity to invest energy in committed actions rather than struggle against their psychological events. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: (i) To present the ACT basic concepts and (ii) to propose a systematic review of the literature about effectiveness of this kind of psychotherapy. METHOD: (i) The core concepts of ACT come from Monestès (2011), Scho

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Eating Disorders.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) conceptualizes eating disorders (EDs) as rigid attempts to solve the problem of human suffering through food, eating or weight control. Case formulation and intervention is based on functional assessment of ED behaviors and informed by common patterns of psychological flexibility observed across dimensions of cognition, emotion, self, motivation, and overt action. ACT interventions, combined with other evidence-based practices for EDs, can be used to disrupt ED behaviors and increase the individual's capacity to meet their physical and emotional needs ad

Current empirical status of acceptance and commitment therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is one of the several psychotherapies that have been described as 'third wave' cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs). The present editorial review examines the current status of ACT with a focus on previous reviews, a meta-analysis and new studies that have been published between January 2006 and August 2008. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies on ACT suggest that ACT may be effective for a variety of disorders, including several anxiety disorders, depression, pain, trichotillomania, psychotic disorder, drug abuse and the management of ep

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

While exposure and response prevention (ERP) remains the gold standard for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) offers a complementary approach by enhancing psychological flexibility, focusing on valued actions, and addressing experiential avoidance. The article highlights ACT's potential to improve engagement and outcomes in OCD treatment, particularly for those who do not respond fully to traditional ERP. Empirical evidence supports ACT's effectiveness, suggesting it as a viable alternative or adjunctive therapy for OCD.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Hypersexuality: A Pilot Study.

Hypersexuality refers to the inability to control sexual desire. Despite it has shown serious consequences for physical, psychological and social health, the evidence of available psychological interventions is still insufficient. In this open-label pilot study, an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention was conducted with adults with clinically significant levels of hypersexuality aimed to examine its feasibility and usefulness. The intervention consisted of eight weekly online individual psychological intervention sessions. Outcome self-report measures were administered at basel

Acceptance and commitment therapy for fibromyalgia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by widespread pain and co-morbid symptoms such as fatigue and depression. For FM, medical treatments alone appear insufficient. Recent meta-analyses point to the utility of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), but effects are moderate. Within the continuous development of CBT, the empirical support for acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) has increased rapidly. ACT focuses on improving functioning by increasing the patient's ability to act in accordance with personal values also in the presence of pain and distress (i.e., psychological flexibilit

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Narrative Review.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is prevalent in the United States and while useful treatments exist, more treatment development work is needed. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for GAD has growing empirical support, but this literature has not yet been summarized for GAD alone. In this paper we provide a narrative review of the current literature on ACT for GAD. Our search yielded 21 studies of ACT for GAD with 15 included in this review (one case study, two open trials, one multiple baseline single subject design, three semi-experimental designs, and eight randomized clinical trials

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Case Study.

Recent years have witnessed an increased interest in the use of "third-wave" psychotherapies in treating psychiatric disorders. These newer therapies are fundamentally different from the existing techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy in terms of their guiding principles and processes of change. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is the most prominent among these "third wave" psychotherapies. However, there have not been any reports from India, thus far, that have studied the use of ACT in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We describe a case of OCD that was successful

Internet-Delivered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Anxiety Treatment: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety conditions are debilitating and prevalent throughout the world. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an effective, acceptance-based behavioral therapy for anxiety. However, there are treatment barriers (eg, financial, geographical, and attitudinal), which prevent people from accessing it. To overcome these barriers, internet-delivered ACT (iACT) interventions have been developed in recent years. These interventions use websites to deliver ACT information and skill training exercises on the Web, either as pure self-help or with therapist guidance. OBJECTIVE: This syst

A Conceptual and Empirical Review of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Hoarding.

This review provides a conceptual and empirical overview of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as a treatment for hoarding. ACT uses a functional contextual model to conceptualize hoarding as a narrowed behavioral repertoire caused by psychological inflexibility. ACT for hoarding focuses on fostering psychological flexibility to expand the behavioral repertoire in ways that align with values. ACT can be tailored to address common clinical issues in hoarding such as problems in insight and motivation, relational difficulties, and executive dysfunction. Initial evidence from three clinical

Initial Acceptability and Outcomes of Group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Adolescent Anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety among adolescents is pervasive, necessitating novel treatment approaches, such as DNA-v (Discoverer, Noticer, Advisor, along with values), a developmental adaptation of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). METHODS: This study was a preliminary test of group DNA-v with a racially diverse sample of youths (N=7; mean age=16.28 years) already receiving mental health services for anxiety. Treatment comprised eight 90-minute weekly group sessions. Participants completed measures of psychological flexibility weekly, as well as anxiety and psychological inflexibility at pretrea
