[Accidental falls].

Falls are common cause of injuries among elderly people, and fractures are the most serious consequence of falls. For seniors, hip fractures are the second major cause of bedridden. The feature and acute care of head injury, spinal cord injury, vertebrae fracture, and hip fracture are described. Just had fracture fixation, the patient can not go back to the original ADL. In order not to become bedridden, both medication and physical examination are important based on the new disease concept of locomotive syndrome. To do so, requires hospital and clinic cooperation. Sufficient cooperation is no

[Accidental falls in the elderly].

Falls in the elderly are common with consecutive high mortality and morbidity. Recent consecutive data focus on identification and therapy of intrinsic risk factors. Sarcopenia, imbalance and gait disorders represent the major risk factors. Sarcopenia is caused by a disequilibrium of protein synthesis and breakdown, probably in consequence of age-related changes in protein metabolism. Protein supplements in combination with strength training shows the best benefit. Disorders in balance and gait are caused by age-related or pathologic changes in a complex regulation system of gait. The individu

[Spinal injuries in accidental falls].

The case histories of 247 patients with spinal damages caused by a fall from a height are analysed. In 180 (75.3%) patients the damage to the spine was combined with traumas of other localization. The author emphasizes the specific features of the diagnosis and the tactics of management of patients with trauma attended by multiple and concurrent injuries and calling for physicians of allied specialties to take part in the examination and treatment. The methods of treatment of spinal damages are chosen strictly individually and are combined with nonoperative or operative management of injuries

Accidental falls and injuries among seniors.

This study analyzes data on accidental falls for those aged 65 and older. The data are based on mortality statistics from 1980 to 1989 and morbidity statistics from 1985 to 1989. These statistics are provided to the Canadian Centre for Health Information by the provincial governments. Mortality rates and hospital separation rates for accidental falls are highest for those aged 65 and older. Accidents are one of the leading causes of death and hospitalization among seniors. In 1989, for those aged 65 and older, accidental falls accounted for 56% of accidental deaths and 65% of accident-related

[Epidemiology of accidental falls in the elderly].

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of epidemiological data on falls and fall-related injuries for the aged population in Germany. The purpose of the article is to present the available data focusing on the incidence of the fracture types that carry the highest risk for mortality, hospitalization and persisting disabilities. METHODS: The paper reports on a 10% representative sample that was drawn by the Federal Bureau of Statistics. A medline search for 1980-1998 was performed to identify relevant articles. The OECD database was used for mortality rates after injurious falls. If no sufficient data

[Diagnosis of the risk of accidental falls in the elderly].

The steep increase in the incidence of hip fractures and other fall-related fractures with advancing age is caused by an age-associated combination of increased fall frequency, typical fall mechanisms and reduced bone strength. This article reviews the current knowledge related to fall risk factors and fall mechanisms. Non-syncopal falls during normal daily activities are predominantly age-associated occurrences with serious consequences. 5% of all falls cause fractures, another 10 to 15% lead to a variety of further injuries. The most serious consequences of the geriatric fall syndrome are fr

[Role of psychiatry in prevention of accidental falling in the aged].

The high incidence of falling among the psychogeriatric patients has recently been acknowledged. Elderly patients with depression and dementia, and long-term hospitalized schizophrenic patients are particularly prone to falling. By sustaining falling, these patients suffer from not only injuries including femoral neck fracture but also consequent fall-phobia. As the results, quality of life and the prognosis of psychiatric illnesses of the fallers are affected. In order to prevent fallings, we must pay attention to the prescribed drugs, nursing issues and environmental aspects of wards. Muscle

Fatal Hip Fractures From Accidental Falls From a Ground-Level Fall.

Accidental femur fractures in older adults are a public health concern with a considerably high rate of mortality and morbidity. We performed a retrospective review of all deaths reported to the Connecticut Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) over a 5-year period that involved a femur fracture resulting from a ground-level fall. Data on cause of death, contributing conditions, age, ethnicity, sex, comorbidities, and interval between surgery and death were extracted. There were 470 deaths caused by a hip fracture due to a ground-level fall. The majority were woman (n = 312 or 66.1%) and Whi

Bilateral Parietal Skull Fractures in Infants Attributable to Accidental Falls.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple skull fractures, including bilateral parietal skull fractures (BPSFs) in infants are considered to be suspicious for abusive head trauma (AHT). The aim of this report is to describe a series of BPSF cases in infants which occurred due to accidental falls. METHODS: We searched our neuroradiology database for BPSF in infants (<1 year old) diagnosed between 2006 and 2019; we reviewed initial presentation, mechanisms of injury, clinical course, head imaging, skeletal survey X-rays, ophthalmology, social work and child abuse physicians (CAP) assessments, and long-term follow

Renal disease and accidental falls: a review of published evidence.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of falling is complex, and identification of risk factors may be essential for prevention. The relationship between renal disease and falls is unclear, and the goal of this study was to collect the available evidence and investigate the relationship between accidental falls and renal dysfunction. METHODS: Electronic searches were performed in the MEDLINE, Scopus, Ovid SP and Web of Science databases to identify the appropriate literature. The themes used were: falls (combined in the title/abstract fall or falls or falling or faller* or fallen or slip* or trip* or

Accidental Falls in Patients with Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The significance of falls and their repercussions in Parkinson's disease has been extensively researched. However, despite potentially serious effects on health and quality of life and negative impact on the healthcare system, there is not a sufficient understanding of the role of falls in hyperkinetic movement disorders (HKMDs). This review aims to provide an overview of the prevalence of falls, injuries, and preventive measures in the most common HKMDs. METHODS: Studies up to May 1, 2022 were searched in PubMed using Medical Subjects Headings of relatively prevalent HKMDs associ

Direct medical costs of accidental falls for adults with transfemoral amputations.

BACKGROUND: Active individuals with transfemoral amputations are provided a microprocessor-controlled knee with the belief that the prosthesis reduces their risk of falling. However, these prostheses are expensive and the cost-effectiveness is unknown with regard to falls in the transfemoral amputation population. The direct medical costs of falls in adults with transfemoral amputations need to be determined in order to assess the incremental costs and benefits of microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees. OBJECTIVE: We describe the direct medical costs of falls in adults with a transfemoral

Relationship between use of sleep medication and accidental falls during hospitalization.

Falls are common in elderly patients, and prevention of fall is important for safety and for reduction of health care costs. Sleep medications are among many potential causes of fall. In this study, we examined relationship of sleep medication with fall from January 2017 to December 2017. 726 falls occurred in 442 patients, and the average age at the time of fall was 60.7 ± 23.8 years. Fall was most common in patients with neurological disease, followed by gastroenterological, ophthalmological, respiratory, and orthopedic conditions. Sleep medication was used in 223 falls (31%). Fall occurred

Risk factors for accidental falls during pregnancy - a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Falls during pregnancy occur in 25-27% of women and can cause serious harm to both the mother and the fetus. The objective of this systematic review was to identify intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for falls during pregnancy by reviewing original studies and addressing possible forms of prevention. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Cochrane library, and Web of Science databases for studies assessing risk factors for falling after a fall has occurred or by using posturographic assessment. RESULTS: Fourteen studies were included in the review. The identified extrinsic risk factors

Multidisciplinary approach to "accidental" falls in the elderly: a case report.

Falls in the elderly are commonly and often wrongly identified as "accidental". We report a case of an elderly woman admitted to first aid for a trauma due to an accidental fall. Geriatric multidisciplinary evaluation revealed mild cognitive impairment associated with depressive symptoms; both findings made the anamnesis uncertain. Syncope algorithm was applied and "tachy-brady form of sick sinus syndrome" was diagnosed. Differential diagnosis between "accidental" and "apparently accidental" falls in elderly patients is very difficult but a multidisciplinary geriatric evaluation can clarify th

[Fractures following accidental falls among the elderly in the county of Aarhus].

The incidence rates of common fall-related fractures were investigated in a Danish population of elderly people (> 64 years). One thousand one hundred and eighty fractures in 1016 patients were observed. About 26/1000 suffered a fracture per year, 47% being hip fractures, and 33% fractures of the wrist. Incidence rates increased with age, most markedly for fractures in the weight-bearing skeleton (hip, pelvis and vertebral column). Patients with a fall-related fracture had a four times higher risk of getting a new fracture. Increased mortality, adjusted for age and sex, ranged from 10 to 30 pe
