[Accidental circular saw injuries].

Two hundred twenty-six accident reports and medical statements concerning circular-saw injuries were evaluated. All injuries occurred on hands. Left and right hands were hurt share and share alike. Among the 125 isolated one-finger injuries an obvious stepwise decrease in frequency from thumb to little finger and from fingertip to finger basis was found. The more proximal the wound lay, the more frequent a localization diagonal or parallel to finger axis was registered. Most accidents hurt skin or soft tissue. Bone lesions occurred less frequent and were characterized by splinters or fractures

[Spinal injuries in accidental falls].

The case histories of 247 patients with spinal damages caused by a fall from a height are analysed. In 180 (75.3%) patients the damage to the spine was combined with traumas of other localization. The author emphasizes the specific features of the diagnosis and the tactics of management of patients with trauma attended by multiple and concurrent injuries and calling for physicians of allied specialties to take part in the examination and treatment. The methods of treatment of spinal damages are chosen strictly individually and are combined with nonoperative or operative management of injuries

A descriptive study of accidental skeletal injuries and non-accidental skeletal injuries of child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Lack of awareness and recognition of child maltreatment is the major reason behind underreporting. All victims often interact with the health care system for routine or emergency care. In several research works, non-accidental fractures are the second most common injury in maltreated children and it is represented up to one-third of cases. AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine the incidence of different types of accidental and non-accidental skeletal injuries among children, estimate the severity of injuries according to the modified injury severity score and to determine the degree of f

Accidental falls and injuries among seniors.

This study analyzes data on accidental falls for those aged 65 and older. The data are based on mortality statistics from 1980 to 1989 and morbidity statistics from 1985 to 1989. These statistics are provided to the Canadian Centre for Health Information by the provincial governments. Mortality rates and hospital separation rates for accidental falls are highest for those aged 65 and older. Accidents are one of the leading causes of death and hospitalization among seniors. In 1989, for those aged 65 and older, accidental falls accounted for 56% of accidental deaths and 65% of accident-related

Ocular injuries from accidental laser exposure.

This report presents 29 cases of ocular injury (31 eyes) caused by accidental laser exposure. Twenty-eight eyes were injured during laser adjustment and alignment. Nineteen eyes were damaged by Q-switched lasers at a wavelength of 1064 nm. Macula damage occurred in 25 eyes. During the early phase after injury, there were different degrees of retinal coagulation, edema or hemorrhage in exposed spots and there occurred immediate reduction of visual acuity. Effusion of blood and exudate was absorbed in most injured eyes under treatment lasting several weeks; meanwhile, gray-white scars appeared.

Accidental tear gas injuries in security agents.

BACKGROUND: Tear gas is a noxious vapour used in quelling civil disturbances. The law enforcement agents who usually handle this are well trained and rarely injured by the use of this weapon especially during peace times. METHODS: We report injuries sustained by two policemen handling tear gas as a result of accidents. Case notes of the patients were the source of information. RESULTS: Two policemen were injured while handling tear gas. The equipment accidentally dropped and exploded on attempting to pick them. The mechanisms of injuries and parts of the body injured were similar ie the hand

Fracture characteristics to distinguish between accidental injury and non-accidental injury in dogs.

Non-accidental injury (NAI) refers to trauma arising from deliberate physical abuse and is increasingly recognised as an important differential diagnosis in veterinary medicine. Given the sensitivity and importance of identifying NAI, clinicians, pathologists, and veterinary forensic experts need clear scientific evidence to support their diagnosis. The aim of this study was to investigate fractures occurring in accidental and NAI in dogs by comparing the radiographic features of fractures in 19 dogs with abuse fractures and 135 dogs with accidental fractures. Radiographic findings indicated t

Accidental injuries among older adults: An incidence study.

BACKGROUND: To date, the majority of studies assessing accidental injuries among the elderly have focused on fall injuries, while studies of other mechanisms of injuries have been lacking. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate all injury-related visits among older adults to an emergency department and risk factors for injuries. METHODS: Data were collected on all registered visits of adults, ≥67 years old, living in the capital of Iceland, to the emergency department of Landspitali, the National University Hospital, in 2011 and 2012. RESULTS: The yearly incidence rat

Accidental hanging injuries in children: recognition and management.

Accidental hanging is rare in childhood but is often fatal. Window blind cords pose a particular and unique risk to young children in the UK, accounting for one to two deaths annually. These accidents are frequently associated with non-adherence to the safety instructions provided by the manufacturers. Early discovery of the child and initiation of effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the site of the incident are likely to improve the outcome. Prolonged suspension, children who are pulseless at first contact by the emergency paramedic responder, and patients with prolonged periods of rem

Iatrogenic and accidental colon injuries--what to do?

PURPOSE: This study was designed to formulate management guidelines for a variety of rare iatrogenic and accidental injuries to the colon and rectum. METHODS: This review collates the available evidence in the literature. RESULTS: Both investigative and therapeutic maneuvers involving the colon, particularly endoscopy and radiographic contrast studies, are the most common cause of significant injury although the incidence is low. Even less common are injuries produced, at open surgery and minimally invasive surgery, by foreign bodies, enemas, or compressed air. The mechanisms and management

Accidental firearm fatalities and injuries among recreational hunters.

Injuries and fatalities from recreational hunting accidents have been studied much less than firearm accidents occurring in urban populations. The available data indicate that hunting accidents may account for a significant number of unintentional firearm accidents in areas outside commonly studied urban settings. Legislative efforts to control handgun availability can be expected to have little impact on hunting accident statistics. The development of automatic firearm safety devices, promotion of hunter safety programs, and greater participation by the medical community in preventive measure

Inflicted injury versus accidental injury.

The morbidity and mortality that are associated with child abuse is a serious concern for the practicing pediatrician. If abuse is to be prevented, physicians must become skilled in recognizing factors that place a child at risk for abuse. Early and minor signs of abuse and neglect must be recognized and reported to assure services if more serious abuse and neglect are to be prevented. Instruments that are used to strike children or burn them leave their imprint on the child. Marks on the skin may signal the existence of internal injuries. Nonaccidental injuries may be difficult to distinguish

[Risk factors for accidental injuries in preschool children].

OBJECTIVE: To measure the main risk factors associated with the occurrence of accidental injuries in children aged 4-5 years. METHODS: The study included a prospective cohort of children whose parents filled in a diary recording accidents and injuries during a period of one-month. The children represented a systematic subsample from a population-based birth cohort in southern Brazil. The outcome was the number of reported injuries per child during one month. Multivariate analysis (Poisson regression) was used to assess confounding factors. RESULTS: The monthly frequency of accidents was 53.8

Accidental injuries and blood exposure to cardiothoracic surgical teams.

A survey was undertaken over a 15-week period (62 working days) to find out the incidence and common mechanism of accidental injuries and blood exposure in cardiothoracic surgical teams. Two hundred and seventy events were reported: 70% glove penetrations, 18% skin punctures, 4% non-bleeding skin lesions and 8% lacerations with bleeding. Eye splashes occurred in 14% of the cases. The risk to the team was higher for cardiac surgery (1.6) than for thoracic surgery (0.5) and endoscopy (0.01). Most of the events were self-inflicted by experienced personnel. The surgeon's left index finger was most
