[Home accidents associated with anosmia].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk of home accidents related to severe hyposmia. METHODS: A questionnaire, completed by 57 hyposmic patients and 49 control subjects with a normal sense of smell, asked about four specific types of olfactory-related home accidents: undetected fires, undetected gas leaks, consumption of spoiled food, and incidents of food burning. Level of olfactory function was determined by olfactory testing (Biolfa). RESULTS: Olfactory testing revealed that 60% of the patients were anosmic and 40% had severe hyposmia. They reported cooking-related accidents most often (63%), foll

Home accidents in the elderly in Turkey.

Houses may accommodate environmental barriers that pose a risk for older people. This study aimed to identify the main characteristics of the dwellings of the elderly, and to assess the impact of those on home accidents. In that cross-sectional study, 3,277 people over 60 years of age living in Aydin province of Turkey were evaluated in December 2004, using a questionnaire and a home safety check list. The results indicated that 38.6% of the elderly have had any type of home accident within the last 12 months, and the most common type of accident was falls (31.9% of all accidents). Possible ca

[Risk factors in home accidents among preschool children].

The present investigation is part of an investigation concerning preschool children's accidents at home. A total of 3,011 homes with preschool children were examined with the object of reducing the number of accidents involving preschool children. Selected risk factors were registered (falls, burns, poisoning) responsible for accidents to preschool children in their homes and this information was compared with information about the type of housing, district and the social status. The investigation revealed that 30% of the homes had "dangerous" windows, 30% had taps which could be swung out ove

Measuring severity of injuries to children from home accidents.

The severity of injuries from home accidents was assessed in 402 children under the age of 5 treated in the accident department of an inner London hospital. Our child injury severity scale comprises three grades of severity for six types of injury. There was moderate agreement between the observer and an assessor in categorising the cases. Burns and scalds and poisoning caused more severe injuries than other accidents. A strong correlation was found between the parent's social class and the severity of the accident, but there was no correlation with ethnic group as indicated by the parents' co

Home accidents in elderly patients presenting to an emergency department.

A prospective study was carried out in an Accident and Emergency department (A&E) to (1) examine the pattern of home accidents in elderly patients presenting to the A&E; (2) determine the nature and mechanisms of the accidents; and (3) investigate the associated factors in these accidents. All patients aged 65 or above with a history of injury at home within one week were included. Patients who needed immediate resuscitation and patients with mental illness or violent behaviour were excluded. A convenient sample was chosen during an 8-week period. A standardized questionnaire was used to colle

Incidence and causes of home accidents at Ankara Cigiltepe apartments in Turkey.

This is a 3-month prospective study aimed at determining the incidence and causes of home accidents in an Ankara military staff resident with 637 households. The study also determined risk factors in the home environment and the families' need of health education. Of all families, 1.5% were exposed to home accidents and the incidence of home accidents was found to be 0.104/person/years. Among the accidents, falls were most common at 44%, whereas cuts constituted 22% and burns 19%. Insomnia and accidents: cross-sectional study (EQUINOX) on sleep-related home, work and car accidents in 5293 subjects with insomnia from 10 countries.

The link between sleepiness and the risk of motor vehicle accidents is well known, but little is understood regarding the risk of home, work and car accidents of subjects with insomnia. An international cross-sectional survey was conducted across 10 countries in a population of subjects with sleep disturbances. Primary care physicians administered a questionnaire that included assessment of sociodemographic characteristics, sleep disturbance and accidents (motor vehicle, work and home) related to sleep problems to each subject. Insomnia was defined using the International Classification of Sle

Severe aortic regurgitation following blunt chest trauma due to home accident.

Aortic valve rupture is a rare manifestation in comparison to cardiac rupture or contusion following blunt chest trauma. We report a case of aortic valve leaflet rupture with severe aortic regurgitation after a fall from a ladder. The aortic valve rupture had been missed in the emergency ultrasound and was only detected on comprehensive echocardiography after failure of weaning from a mechanical ventilator. The patient underwent aortic bioprosthetic valve replacement that dramatically changed the clinical course.

Home Safety Fall and Accident Risk Among Prematurely Aging, Formerly Homeless Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Homelessness prematurely ages people. A large subgroup of formerly homeless adults between ages 40 and 64 yr have health conditions similar to or worse than people categorized as elderly. Little is known about the impact of this group's chronic health conditions on their ability to safely function in supportive housing. METHOD: Home safety visits were carried out with 25 formerly homeless adults, ages 40-64 yr, now residing in supportive housing. RESULTS: Participants had physical, cognitive, and mental health problems that significantly interfered with their ability to perform da

The epidemiology of accidents: U.S. home safety and the slippages between methods, data, and applications, 1940-1980.

After years of focussing on infectious and degenerative illnesses, U.S. public health turned to the problem of accidents. Over the course of the twentieth century, safety practitioners repurposed the models of infectious disease control, risk-factor medicine, and biomechanics to improve the precision of injury data and to guide its applications. The resulting set of frameworks, methods, and practices, collectively referred to as 'the epidemiology of accidents', changed how health professionals analysed injuries but never produced a lasting consensus on appropriate safety interventions. Was the Risk from Nursing-Home Evacuation after the Fukushima Accident Higher than the Radiation Risk?

After the 2011 accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, nursing-home residents and staff were evacuated voluntarily from damaged areas to avoid radiation exposure. Unfortunately, the evacuation resulted in increased mortalities among nursing home residents. We assessed the risk trade-off between evacuation and radiation for 191 residents and 184 staff at three nursing homes by using the same detriment indicator, namely loss of life expectancy (LLE), under four scenarios, i.e. "rapid evacuation (in accordance with the actual situation; i.e. evacuation on 22 March)," "deliberate ev

Suspected paediatric pesticide poisoning in the UK. II--Home Accident Surveillance System 1989-1991.

1. Between 1989 and 1991, 121,708 children less than 10 years old attended 22 Accident and Emergency (A & E) Departments in the UK as a result of an accident at home; 6,478 of these were cases of suspected poisoning. 2. Two hundred and fifty (124 boys and 126 girls) of 6,478 cases involved pesticides. Forty two per cent of these children were thought to have been poisoned by rodenticides, 33% by a different animal poison, 13% by an herbicide or fungicide, 7% by creosote and 5% by mothballs; a pattern similar to that observed in previous years. 3. Fifty-seven of 250 children (23%) were admitted

[An experience providing home care to a victim of cerebral vascular accident and purple urine bag syndrome].

This article presents the case of a victim of cerebral vascular accident with long duration of urinary catheterization, who developed a purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) because of deficiency of knowledge and skills in home care and lack of communication and support among family members. In this case, the main caregivers also experienced psychophysical fatigue and fear, which diminished family coping ability. During the period of nursing care, from March 10 to August 15, 2006, we carried out 10 home care visits and eight telephone consultations. Exiting urinary tract infection, constipation, an

[Swedish study of home accidents: children with young mothers and children in families on welfare are at greater risk].

In this study we used data from Swedish national registers to describe socio-demographic patterns of hospital admissions after injuries in the home (poisonings, falls, scald injuries and ingestion/intrusion of foreign objects) in children 0-2 years of age. Infants and toddlers in families with young mothers and in families on social welfare were at particular risk, while children with foreign-born parents and children in single parent households were at greater risk for scald injuries only. The relative risk for poisonings, scald injuries and ingestion of foreign objects respectively was found
