An organization's performance is constantly compared with that of other similar businesses and is challenged to comply with industry standards. Accreditation by an external standard-setting body officially sanctions a business and differentiates it from competitors. Various industries have external standard-setting entities to which they can apply for accreditation. Compounding pharmacists are encouraged to seek accreditation by the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation board. The accreditation process may seem daunting, but it can be simplified and more clearly understood if you divide the appli

CONTEXT: Ohio is the only state that requires local health departments (LHDs) to be accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). As of May 2024, 80% of Ohio's 111 LHDs achieved accreditation, making Ohio the state with the highest proportion of accredited LHDs in the country.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the experience of public health accreditation in Ohio including the perceived value of PHAB accreditation for LHDs. It also explored the extent to which perspectives on the value of mandatory accreditation differed between state and local health officials.
DESIGN: Data for

We have recently published the experience of the accreditation body of undergraduate medical education in Iran on developing and validating standards based on the WFME framework (Gandomkar et al., BMC Med Educ 23:379, 2023). Agabagheri et al. extended our work and proposed a blueprint for post-accreditation monitoring based on their experience in developing an official guide in their Matters Arising (Aghabagheri et al., BMC Med Educ). The authors have used post-accreditation monitoring as a process of monitoring and controlling accreditation activities, procedures often referred to as meta-eva

Accreditation is fundamental to nursing program quality, graduate/completer eligibility for licensure and certification, and admission to graduate study. Traditionally, faculty expectations have been organized around three pillars: teaching, scholarship, and service/practice. Although these categories remain essential, they no longer fully capture the scope of contemporary faculty responsibilities. This article proposes that accreditation activities constitute a fourth cornerstone of the faculty role, integral rather than supplementary to academic work. Nurse practitioner faculty often transit

Accreditation provides an incentive to promote processes improving quality and enhancing patient safety, both in hospital and community settings. For the past three decades, many western, as well as developing countries, have adopted this methodology. Israel too has taken this pathway to adopt accreditation in general, geriatric and psychiatric hospitals as part of a national mission. Beyond the benefits to the patient, accreditation has numerous advantages: raising the professional accountability of healthcare providers, defining targets for improvement based on the strategies of the Ministry

Tremendous confusion exists concerning the issues of physician certification and practice accreditation in obstetric and gynecologic ultrasonography. Certification speaks to physician competence. All obstetrician-gynecologists who have finished residency training since 1982 are deemed "competent" to perform obstetric and gynecologic ultrasonography by virtue of their training. Those trained before 1982 need to be able to describe their level of experience in performing obstetric and gynecologic ultrasonography. Accreditation deals with issues of patient safety and quality control, including eq

Accreditation systems create and enforce the rules for medical education. When accreditors expand their scope or change their standards or protocols, every medical school they regulate must change, with lasting impacts on large numbers of graduating physicians. Because the accreditation of undergraduate medical education (UME) has become globally accepted and widespread, one may assume it is supported by strong evidence. Such is not the case. This article recounts the origins of accreditation in the U.S. over 100 years ago as an effort to distinguish allopathic physicians from their competitor

BACKGROUND: Program accreditation is central to quality assurance in higher education. However, evidence on accreditation outcomes under Vietnam's first national program accreditation framework remains limited, particularly regarding criterion-specific quality gaps in pharmacy education. Identifying these gaps is needed to prioritize quality improvement and inform implementation of the revised framework, which places greater emphasis on outcome-based education (OBE) and continuous quality improvement.
OBJECTIVE: To examine accreditation outcomes of Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) programs in Vi

Soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms which may be subclassified into over 70 specific histologies and may be distributed throughout the body. Approximately one-half arises in the extremities and one-third arises in the abdomen, pelvis, and retroperitoneum. The diversity and rarity of sarcomas combined with the quite large number of affected patients are factors which underline of the importance of networking in diagnosis, therapy, and research dealing with rare cancers. The expertise of the treating center is one of the most significant factors affecting survival i

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Healthcare systems increasingly rely on standardized diagnostic information to support clinical decision-making, reimbursement, and public health governance. Although accreditation of medical laboratories underpins trust in diagnostic services, in practice, it is encountered primarily through the way in which accredited status is communicated in routine healthcare documentation. This study examines national rules that govern the communication of accreditation-related information and their relevance for healthcare management and policy.
METHODS: A descriptive, document-b

BACKGROUND: The aim of accreditation is to improve quality of care and patient safety. However, studies on the effectiveness of accreditation on clinical outcomes are limited and inconsistent. Comparative studies have contrasted accredited with non-accredited hospitals or hospitals without a benchmark, but assessments of clinical outcomes of patients treated at hospitals undergoing accreditation are sparse. The Faroe Islands hospitals were accredited for the first time in 2017, making them an ideal place to study the impact of accreditation.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the association

In the US, accreditation and certification of residency training are functions of separate public sector agencies. Accrediting decisions are made directly by 26 Residency Review Committees, which represent the primary medical specialties and function under the authority of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The accrediting bodies may consider only educational issues and are prohibited by the government from controlling physician supply. Only the programme, not the institution in which it is conducted, is accredited. The US residency is a structured educational programme

This paper describes how the Huron Perth and Area Ontario Health Team implemented a multi-partner, single-survey accreditation collaborative across independently governed organizations. By reframing accreditation as a system-level integration strategy, the collaborative aligned governance, policies and quality improvement efforts across sectors. Key lessons highlight the importance of shared governance, trust, continuous improvement and coordinated leadership. Evidence shows reduced duplication, improved policy consistency and enhanced system-level risk visibility. The model demonstrates how c

The development of the Netherlands system for accreditation of hospitals started in 1989 in the Pilotproject Accreditation (PACE). This resulted in the establishment of the Netherlands Institute for Accreditation of Hospitals (NAIH) early 1999, by the Dutch Association of Hospitals, the Dutch Association of University Hospitals, the Dutch Organisation of Medical Specialists and the PACE foundation. Dutch hospitals may request (voluntary) for an accredition for their whole organisation or for parts of it, independent of the used quality system. An accreditation assesses whether organizational r

BACKGROUND: Hospital accreditation is a systematic evaluation program conducted by an independent external accreditation body. It is the most common health assessment approach for enhancing hospital quality and safety. However, its implementation in Afghanistan faces substantial governance challenges. This study examined accreditation governance challenges and proposed solutions in Afghanistan.
METHODS: A qualitative study using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) conducted in 2024. Semi-structured interviews carried out with 75 key stakeholders including policymakers, accreditatio

In recent decades, medical imaging has experienced a technological revolution. After conducting several surveys to assess the quality and safety of diagnostic imaging services in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) developed a basic accreditation program that can be implemented by the ministry of health of any developing country. Patterned after the American College of Radiology's accreditation program, the PAHO program relies on a national accreditation committee to establish and maintain accreditation standards. The process involves a peer review eval

This study aimed to assess the laboratory professional perceptions on how the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Laboratory Accreditation Program (LAP) is associated with the laboratory processes and patient safety across multiple countries in the Middle East and South Asia. The objective was to determine how CAP LAP influences laboratory quality and safety culture, and participants reported that error-related events appeared to decrease following the CAP LAP. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was used, employing a structured electronic questionnaire distributed to CAP-accredited labo

JACIE (Joint Accreditation Committee of the ISCT and the EBMT) launched its first official inspection programme in January 2004. Since then, 35 centres in Europe have been inspected. Almost all were found to be functioning at a high level of excellence, with the majority having only minor deficiencies in compliance with the standards. In one-third of centres there were more significant deficiencies. The most common deficiencies were in quality management, and a survey of the applicant centres confirmed this was the area where centres experienced most difficulty in preparation for accreditation
