Suspected red maple (Acer rubrum) toxicosis with abortion in two Percheron mares.

Horses develop severe and often fatal hemolytic anemia after ingesting dried leaves from red maple (Acer rubrum) trees. Toxicosis appears related to an unknown oxidant present in the dried or wilted leaves. This case report describes 2 horses that aborted and developed fatal hemolytic anemia after consuming wilted leaves from red maple (Acer rubrum). While an absolute diagnosis was not confirmed due to lack of proper antemortem and postmortem examinations, red maple toxicosis appeared a reasonable diagnosis based on clinical signs and laboratory findings. Other differentials include equine inf

Phenotypic plasticity of leaf shape along a temperature gradient in Acer rubrum.

Both phenotypic plasticity and genetic determination can be important for understanding how plants respond to environmental change. However, little is known about the plastic response of leaf teeth and leaf dissection to temperature. This gap is critical because these leaf traits are commonly used to reconstruct paleoclimate from fossils, and such studies tacitly assume that traits measured from fossils reflect the environment at the time of their deposition, even during periods of rapid climate change. We measured leaf size and shape in Acer rubrum derived from four seed sources with a broad

Excretion of laccase by sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) cells. Effects of a copper deficiency.

Copper-deprived sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) cells do not excrete molecules of active laccase in their culture medium. In the range of 2-100 micrograms of copper initially present per litre of nutrient solution, the total laccase activity measured in the cell suspensions at the end of the exponential phase of growth was closely proportional to the amount of added copper. However, copper-deprived cells excreted the laccase apoprotein (laccase without copper) at the same rate as copper-supplied cells excreted the active, copper-containing, laccase. When the culture medium was initially supplie

Heinz body anemia and methemoglobinemia in ponies given red maple (acer rubrum L.) leaves.

Ponies given dried red maple (Acer rubrum L.) leaves at a dose of 3.0 gm/kg body weight became ill and died one to five days after administration of the leaves. Two clinical patterns of disease were seen. Ponies given dried leaves collected after September 15 died by 18 hours, while ponies given dried leaves collected before September 15 became ill with a hemolytic syndrome and died by three to five days. Freshly harvested leaves administered immediately after collection did not produce disease in ponies, but when dried, they became toxic and remained so for at least 30 days. Overnight freezin

Cost-effectiveness of dengue control strategies in Bangladesh: An optimal control and ACER-ICER analysis.

The prevalence of the dengue virus in Bangladesh is extensive, significantly contributing to both illness and death. Managing outbreaks of dengue fever poses a challenge in tropical regions like Bangladesh, where consistently warm temperatures allow mosquitoes to breed and the virus to proliferate. This study introduces a deterministic model with four compartments to represent the transmission of the dengue virus, with parameters estimated using the 2023 outbreak data in Bangladesh. Utilizing the next generation method, we calculate the basic reproduction number (Rb) and conduct sensitivity an

In vitro exposure of Acer negundo pollen to atmospheric levels of SO₂ and NO₂: effects on allergenicity and germination.

In the last years, a rising trend of pollen allergies in urban areas has been attributed to atmospheric pollution. In this work, we investigated the effects of SO(2) and NO(2) on the protein content, allergenicity, and germination rate of Acer negundo pollen. A novel environmental chamber was assembled to exposure pollen samples with SO(2) or NO(2) at two different levels: just below and two times the atmospheric hour-limit value acceptable for human health protection in Europe. Results showed that protein content was lower in SO(2)-exposed pollen samples and slightly higher in NO(2)-exposed p

Protective effect of Acer mono Max. sap on water immersion restraint stress-induced gastric ulceration.

Acer mono Max. sap (AmMs) is called 'Gol-Li-Su' or 'Go-Lo-Soe' in Korean, which means 'water beneficial to the bones'. It is reported that the sap contains several types of minerals and sugars. In particular, the calcium concentration of the sap is 36.5 times higher than that of commercial mineral water. Apart from its anti-osteoporosis effect, no reports have addressed the biological activities of AmMs against degenerative diseases. In the present study, we investigated whether AmMs alleviates gastric ulcer-related symptoms in a stress-induced mouse model. To assess the effect of AmMs on gast

Multi-omics of the endangered Acer miaotaiense reveal nervonic acid biosynthesis, population evolution, and environmental adaptation.

Climate change threatens global forest biodiversity, particularly affecting long-lived, endangered tree species. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their population evolution and environmental adaptation remain unclear. Here, we employed multi-omics analyses, including pan-genomes, transcriptomics, metabolomics, population genomics, and epigenomics, to decipher nervonic acid biosynthesis and population evolutionary history of the endangered tree Acer miaotaiense. A high-quality, chromosome-level genome of A. miaotaiense was first assembled (645.94 Mb). Pan-genome characterization sho

Warm springs compress budbreak, affecting floral freezing risk in red (Acer rubrum) and silver maple (A. saccharinum).

Red (Acer rubrum) and silver maple (Acer saccharinum) flower before leafing out in the early spring, making them vulnerable to post-budbreak freezing (false springs), a risk climate change exacerbates. They also show interannual variation in fruit production (masting), but it is unknown whether this pattern is related to freezing damage after budbreak. We observed budbreak phenology and measured cold hardiness of floral and vegetative buds of both maple species from dormancy to spring budbreak in 2024 and 2025. We also collected buds three times in 2025, incubated them in growth chambers up to

Lipidomics reveal the cognitive improvement effects of Acer truncatum Bunge seed oil on hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy rats.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is one of the leading causes of acute neonatal death and chronic neurological damage, and severe HIE can have secondary sequelae such as cognitive impairment and cerebral palsy, for which effective interventions are lacking. In this study, we found that continuous 30-day intake of Acer truncatum Bunge seed oil (ASO) reduced brain damage and improved cognitive ability in HIE rats. Using lipidomic strategies, we observed that HIE rats had decreased unsaturated fatty acids and increased lysophospholipids in the brain. However, after 30 days of ASO treatment,
