Contrasting responses of cuticular bacteria of Pardosa pseudoannulata under cadmium stress.

Although research into how spiders respond to cadmium (Cd)-induced toxicity is ongoing, little is known about the effects of Cd contamination on the exogenous microorganisms of spiders. The current study used 16 S rRNA gene sequencing to evaluate the richness and structure of external bacterial communities in the wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata under long- and short-term Cd stress. Our results showed that Proteobacteria and Acidibacter were the dominating bacterial phylum and genus. The alpha diversity analysis showed that the high background of Cd concentration (Cd) reduced bacterial alpha

Two novel Fe(III)-reducing bacteria, Geothrix campi sp. nov. and Geothrix mesophila sp. nov., isolated from paddy soils.

In this research, two novel Fe(III)-reducing bacteria, SG10T and SG198T of genus Geothrix, were isolated from the rice field of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China. Strains SG10T and SG198T were strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped and Gram-stain-negative. The two novel strains exhibited iron reduction ability, utilizing various single organic acid as the elector donor and Fe(III) as a terminal electron acceptor. Strains SG10T and SG198T showed the highest 16S rRNA sequences similarities to the type strains of Geothrix oryzisoli SG189T (99.0-99.5%) and Geothr

Weathered granites and soils harbour microbes with lanthanide-dependent methylotrophic enzymes.

BACKGROUND: Prior to soil formation, phosphate liberated by rock weathering is often sequestered into highly insoluble lanthanide phosphate minerals. Dissolution of these minerals releases phosphate and lanthanides to the biosphere. Currently, the microorganisms involved in phosphate mineral dissolution and the role of lanthanides in microbial metabolism are poorly understood. RESULTS: Although there have been many studies of soil microbiology, very little research has investigated microbiomes of weathered rock. Here, we sampled weathered granite and associated soil to identify the zones of l

A respiro-fermentative strategy to survive nanoxia in Acidobacterium capsulatum.

Microbial soil habitats are characterized by rapid shifts in substrate and nutrient availabilities, as well as chemical and physical parameters. One such parameter that can vary in soil is oxygen; thus, microbial survival is dependent on adaptation to this substrate. To better understand the metabolic abilities and adaptive strategies to oxygen-deprived environments, we combined genomics with transcriptomics of a model organism, Acidobacterium capsulatum, to explore the effect of decreasing, environmentally relevant oxygen concentrations. The decrease from 10 to 0.1 µM oxygen (3.6 to 0.036 pO2

[Influence of methane and trichloroethylene domestication on bacterial community structure in landfill cover soil.].

The biological oxidation capacity and change of microbial community structure of typical landfill cover soil cultured in situ by methane and trichloroethylene (TCE) were studied. The rates of CH4 oxidation and TCE degradation were 0.20-0.87 Μmol·g-1 soil·h-1 and 0.009-0.013 mg·L-1·h-1 among these landfill cover soils, respectively. The activity of CH4 oxidation in Shandong landfill cover soil was higher than that in landfill cover soils sampled from Guangdong, Shanghai and Chongqing. The α-diversity and microbial community structure before and after co-metabolism degradation were then investig

[Effects of Mercury Pollution on Soil Organic Carbon Stability and Carbon-fixing Microbial Communities].

To elucidate the effects of Hg pollution on soil organic carbon stability and autotrophic microbial carbon assimilation, the characteristics of soil CO2 emission rate, organic carbon components, and cbbL and cbbM functional microorganisms before and after 29 d of Hg pollution were studied using indoor culture experiments and molecular biology techniques. The results showed that the effects of different levels of Hg pollution on soil CO2 emission rates were different. High levels of Hg (S2,S3,and S5) inhibited soil CO2 cumulative emissions, whereas low levels of Hg (S1,S4,and S6) promoted soil

Soil Microbial and Metabolomic Shifts Induced by Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacterial Inoculation in Torreya grandis Seedlings.

Phosphorus is crucial for plant growth and development, but excess fertilizer not absorbed by plants often binds with metal ions like iron and manganese, forming insoluble compounds that contribute to soil environmental pollution. This study investigates the impact of Burkholderia sp., a phosphate-solubilizing bacterium utilized as a biofertilizer, on the fertility of T. grandis soil, alongside the associated shifts in soil metabolites and their relationship with microbial communities after inoculation. The soil microbial community structures and metabolite profiles were analyzed via amplicon

Soil Humic Acid Stimulates Potentially Active Dissimilatory Arsenate-Reducing Bacteria in Flooded Paddy Soil as Revealed by Metagenomic Stable Isotope Probing.

Dissimilatory arsenate reduction contributes a large proportion of arsenic flux from flooded paddy soil, which is closely linked to soil organic carbon input and efflux. Humic acid (HA) represents a natural ingredient in soil and is shown to enhance microbial arsenate respiration to promote arsenic mobility. However, the community and function profiles of metabolically active arsenate-respiring bacteria and their interactions with HA in paddy soil remain unclear. To probe this linkage, we performed a genome-centric comparison of potentially active arsenate-respiring bacteria in anaerobic micro

Multi-level comparisons of cloacal, skin, feather and nest-associated microbiota suggest considerable influence of horizontal acquisition on the microbiota assembly of sympatric woodlarks and skylarks.

BACKGROUND: Working toward a general framework to understand the role of microbiota in animal biology requires the characterisation of animal-associated microbial communities and identification of the evolutionary and ecological factors shaping their variation. In this study, we described the microbiota in the cloaca, brood patch skin and feathers of two species of birds and the microbial communities in their nest environment. We compared patterns of resemblance between these microbial communities at different levels of biological organisation (species, individual, body part) and investigated

Effects of different types of microbial inoculants on available nitrogen and phosphorus, soil microbial community, and wheat growth in high-P soil.

Irrational application of chemical fertilizers causes soil nutrient imbalance, reduced microbial diversity, soil diseases, and other soil quality problems and is one of the main sources of non-point pollution. The application of microbial inoculant (MI) can improve the soil environment and crop growth to reduce problems caused by irrational application of chemical fertilizers. Field experiments were carried out in high-phosphorus soils to study the effects of the addition of various MIs combined with chemical fertilizers on soil properties, wheat growth, and soil microbial composition and stru

Legume-microbiome interactions unlock mineral nutrients in regrowing tropical forests.

Legume trees form an abundant and functionally important component of tropical forests worldwide with N2-fixing symbioses linked to enhanced growth and recruitment in early secondary succession. However, it remains unclear how N2-fixers meet the high demands for inorganic nutrients imposed by rapid biomass accumulation on nutrient-poor tropical soils. Here, we show that N2-fixing trees in secondary Neotropical forests triggered twofold higher in situ weathering of fresh primary silicates compared to non-N2-fixing trees and induced locally enhanced nutrient cycling by the soil microbiome commun

Alternation of nasopharyngeal microbiota in healthy youth is associated with environmental factors: implication for respiratory diseases.

The nasopharynx is a key niche of the upper respiratory tract which contains many commensal bacteria and potential pathogens. Dysbiosis of the nasopharyngeal (NP) microbiota is associated with a variety of respiratory diseases. Little is known about NP flora in healthy youth, nor about its relationship with environmental factors. We characterized NP microbiota using the 16S rRNA gene sequencing method, and compared microbial composition from subjects sampled in Spring and Fall when exposed to different environmental factors. Results showed that beta diversity was significantly different. Phyla

Evaluation of the Bacterial Diversity in the World's Deepest Cave-Veryovkina, Arabika Massif, Western Caucasus.

Veryovkina Cave is the world's deepest known cave (2212 m deep). It is located in the Arabika Massif of Gagra Mountain in the Western Caucasus. Its microbiome remains unknown because of difficulties in access. Ten sediment samples were collected at vertical depths ranging from 300 m to 2204 m; they varied by substrate type, moisture content, and visitor accessibility. Total microbial DNA was isolated, and 16S ribosomal gene metabarcoding was applied for taxonomic identification. Seven samples showed reliable content, whereas three samples indicated no recoverable reads. Proteobacteria, Acidoba

Bacterial communities profiles of soil in Hulu Langat recreational parks, Selangor.

OBJECTIVE: Recreational Park soils with higher human disturbance harbor a more diverse bacterial communities, including genera associated with opportunistic pathogens. This raises concerns about the potential transmission of soil-borne diseases such as leptospirosis and melioidosis. Despite this, microbial compositions within specific environments remain poorly understood. This study investigates the diversity and profiles of bacterial communities across four recreational areas in Hulu Langat, Selangor, using 16 S rRNA gene metabarcoding. RESULTS: Results reveal diverse bacterial communities

Microbial and volatile profiling of soils suppressive to Fusarium culmorum of wheat.

In disease-suppressive soils, microbiota protect plants from root infections. Bacterial members of this microbiota have been shown to produce specific molecules that mediate this phenotype. To date, however, studies have focused on individual suppressive soils and the degree of natural variability of soil suppressiveness remains unclear. Here, we screened a large collection of field soils for suppressiveness to Fusarium culmorum using wheat (Triticum aestivum) as a model host plant. A high variation of disease suppressiveness was observed, with 14% showing a clear suppressive phenotype. The mi
