Eight new sesquiterpenes (1-8) and one new norsesquiterpene (9) named calamusins A-I were isolated from the ethanol extract of Acorus calamus rhizomes. The absolute configuration of compound 8 was determined by comparing its experimental and calculated ECD spectra. The absolute configurations of the other compounds were determined from their CD spectra. Furthermore, in in vitro assays, compounds 3, 4, 7, and 9 (10 μM) exhibited weak hepatoprotective activities against APAP-induced HepG2 cell damage.

The constituents and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from Acorus calamus were analysed. Methyl isoeugenol and cyclohexanone were identified as the major constituents of the essential oil. The essential oil was tested for antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeast, and has shown strong antibiotic activities against most of the tested microbes, except Escherichia coli. The hexane extract has shown a similar pattern of antimicrobial activity as the essential oil. Methyl isoeugenol, the most abundant constituent in the essential oil, has also shown similar antimicrobial activity

Acorus gramineus has a number of beneficial effects, including protective effects against age-related disorders. In this study, the effects of A. gramineus on testosterone production and andropause symptoms were evaluated. We first treated TM3 mouse Leydig cells, responsible for testosterone production, with A. gramineus aqueous extract at different concentrations. In TM3 cells, the testosterone concentration increased in a concentration-dependent manner compared with those in the control. In addition, at 400 μg/mL extract, the mRNA expression level of the steroidogenic enzyme CYP11A1 was incr

An ethanol extract of Acorus calamus rhizomes was screened for CNS effects using a battery of 20 tests in rats and mice. The extract exhibited a large number of actions similar to alpha-asarone (an active principle of A. calamus) but differed from the latter in several other respects including the responses to electroshock, apomorphine- and isolation-induced aggressive behaviour, amphetamine toxicity in aggregated mice, behavioural despair syndrome in forced swimming, etc. These differences could be due to chemical substances yet to be isolated from the plant extract.

Anticonvulsant property of Acorus calamus is known. Since combination therapy can lower the dose of individual drug and dose related toxicities, in this study, the effect of co-administration of hydroalcoholic extract of A. calamus (HAEAC) on conventional antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), sodium valproate and carbamazepine was determined using pentylenetetrazole-induced seizures model in rats. On combining the subanticonvulsant doses of HAEAC with sodium valproate and carbamazepine, greater protection as compared to either drug alone was observed. This was not related to change in levels of the AEDs

Acorus gramineus has long been used in East Asia and exhibits diverse biological activities, yet its effects on melanogenesis under oxidative stress remain unclear. This study evaluated the antioxidant capacity of Acorus gramineus ethanol extract (AGEE) and its regulatory effects on melanogenesis in B16F1 melanoma cells under normal and oxidative stress conditions. AGEE showed concentration-dependent antioxidant activity in DPPH radical scavenging, reducing power, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and lipid peroxidation assays, while maintaining low cytotoxicity up to 25 µg/mL. In cell-free systems

Volatile phenylpropenes, including α- and β-asarone, are characteristic aromas of sweet flag (Acorus calamus) and have been used as ingredients in pharmaceutical applications. However, studies on the biosynthetic enzymes involved in the production of volatile phenylpropenes in A. calamus remain limited. In this study, we analyzed volatile phenylpropenes, including α- and β-asarone, in the A. calamus plants. Using RNA-sequencing analysis, we identified a gene encoding S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent O-methyltransferase (AcCOMT), which converts caffeic acid to ferulic acid via the methylation

INTRODUCTION: Malaria is a significant global health concern and adversely affects people in developing countries including Bangladesh. The causative agent Plasmodium falciparum is resistant to several currently available anti-malarial drugs, such as mefloquine, chloroquine, and artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), and this has been a major global challenge towards the control of the disease. There is urgent need for novel anti-malarial chemotherapeutic agents.
METHODOLOGY: The present study aimed to evaluate antimalarial activity of methanolic extracts of three Bangladeshi medicinal
