An infection with Actinobacillus lignieresii, which was spread by a veterinary surgeon, caused problems after caesarean sections in cows on several farms. The wounds became hard about six weeks after the operation, and a few weeks later small abscesses developed and later the wounds were covered with small and large granulomas. The general health of about 20 per cent of the affected cows was poor and in these cows multiple granulomas could be detected in the abdomen by rectal palpation.

Actinobacillosis usually is a sporadic infection that affects the tongue in cattle ("wooden tongue") with possible spread to the digestive tract. In a representative cross-sectional study during 12 months of the years 2008/2009 in four abattoirs in Switzerland, lung and pleura lesions as well as lesions of slaughter carcasses and organs of 34 706 pigs were studied for frequency and type of macroscopic lesions. Of the 24276 examined pigs, 91.2% of the lungs, 94.4% of the heart and 95.5% of the livers showed no macroscopically visible lesions. The actinobacillosis is rare and to date the biological profile of the agent is not yet fully understood. In the horse described herein, Actinobacillus lignieresii was associated with a syndrome identical to wooden tongue in cattle. It responded rapidly to systemic sodium iodide and antibiotic therapy. The definitive diagnosis was based on cytologic examination and culture. If actinobacillosis is suspected, immediate treatment with sodium iodide should be instituted along with supportive therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether an outbreak of Actinobacillus lignieresii was caused by one or multiple strains.
METHODS: Nine isolates of A. lignieresii were obtained from the lymph nodes of 15 affected cattle from two farms to determine whether a single strain was involved. In the winter of 1987/88 a previously unrecognized septicemic disease syndrome - actinobacillosis in mature sows and gilts - was diagnosed in two minimal-disease swine herds in southwestern Ontario. In herd 1, 34 sows, 2 boars, 13 feeder pigs, and 30 suckling pigs were affected; 11 sows, 2 feeders, and 18 suckling pigs died.
