Invasive infections of Aggregatibacter (Actinobacillus) actinomycetemcomitans.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Aggregatibacter (Actinobacillus) actinomycetemcomitans, part of the normal flora of the mouth, is frequently found in human periodontal cultures and is an important pathogen causing various invasive infections, particularly infective endocarditis. In this study, we describe the clinical course and outcome of patients with A. actinomycetemcomitans infection. METHODS: All patients suffering invasive A. actinomycetemcomitans infections at the National Taiwan University Hospital from January 1985 to December 2004 were included in this study. Relevant data regarding clinical pr

[Role of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in human infection].

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (AA), is a cocobacillus thin and small, non motile, uncapsulate and capnophilic. AA, is: one of the species encountered in the mouth's comensal flora being able to be isolated in gingival crevices culture and oral mucosa in a 20% of the healthy population. An important number of pathogenic factors make it well equipped, to protect itself from host's defense mechanisms, and to destroy the periodontal tissue. Between the most important we find lipopolisacarides and leucotoxines which promote tisular invasion and destructive qualities of this microorganism. Si

Experimental transmission of Actinobacillus seminis infection to rams.

Nine groups of four 18- to 24-month-old rams were inoculated with Actinobacillus seminis by the following routes: intraconjunctival, intranasal, oral, intravenous, intramuscular, intraepididymal, vas deferens, intraurethral or intrapreputial. Eight similar rams were left uninoculated as controls. Systemic clinical signs were minimal and were confined primarily to the inoculation sites and the scrotal contents. Mild to severe epididymitis resulted from all the routes of inoculation except intraconjunctival and intranasal. Direct inoculation into the genital tract, especially into the cauda epid

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae infections in closed swine herds: infection patterns and serological profiles.

Many farrow-to-finish herds are endemically infected with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. In order to control the disease efficiently, a better knowledge of the ages at which pigs become infected is necessary. Furthermore, no information is available concerning the influence of maternally derived antibodies on the colonization of the upper respiratory tract. Therefore, A. pleuropneumoniae infection patterns were studied in five farrow-to-finish pig herds (A-E) with a history of pleuropneumonia. A longitudinal study was carried out in herds A and B. In these herds, piglets from sows carrying A

Transmission of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae in pigs is characterized by variation in infectivity.

Ten transmission trials with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae were carried out. The observed transmission was highly variable, which was surprising since the design of the trials was very similar. We investigated whether the variable transmission could be explained by variation in infectivity of A. pleuropneumoniae infected pigs. We looked for measurable characteristics, which could be indicative for infectious pigs or for the level of infectivity. The characteristic that appeared to be most indicative for a pig being infectious was an A. pleuropneumoniae positive tonsil at necropsy. The charac

Infection due to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans: 15 cases and review.

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a small fastidious gram-negative coccobacillus that fails to grow on MacConkey's agar. Slow growth in broth may lead to delays in diagnosis. First described in 1912, A. actinomycetemcomitans has been recognized since 1962 as capable of causing serious infections in humans. Such infections include periodontal infection, soft tissue abscess (often in association with Actinomyces species), and systemic infection, most commonly endocarditis. Fifteen cases and a review of the English-language literature are presented to define the epidemiology and clinical fe

Cerebral hemorrhage in infective endocarditis caused by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.

Cerebral hemorrhage occurs rarely in endocarditis caused by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. A 51-year-old man with a prosthetic mitral valve, who had been prophylactically treated (7 years) with warfarin, presented with intermittent fever. On admission, a Levine grade II/VI systolic cardiac murmur was detected. A transthoracic echocardiogram was negative for valve vegetation. Cefepime (1 g every 8 hours) was administered intravenously. On day 4, culturing of Gram-negative bacilli from blood and a transesophageal echocardiogram revealed a small oscillating filament attached to lateral mit

Immunohistological characteristics of periodontal lesions associated with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans infections.

In this study, various phenotypes of infiltrating cells in the periodontium adjacent to pockets harboring Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans were evaluated. Furthermore, the pattern of class II antigen expression in the periodontal tissues was determined. Eight lesions were associated with the presence of P. gingivalis and 12 with A. actinomycetemcomitans. Predominant cells in the inflammatory infiltrate were T- and B-cells. In most biopsies T-cells dominated over B-cells. The proportion of P. gingivalis, but not of A. actinomycetemcomitans, was positively correl

Downregulation of a protective Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae antigen during the course of infection.

The persistence of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae in convalescent pigs significantly contributes to the distribution of disease. The downregulation of protective antigens in vivo as one possible mechanism responsible for this phenomenon was investigated using the small iron-regulated transferrin binding protein (TbpB-protein) as exemplary protective antigen. From a total of 21 pigs experimentally infected with A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 7 in three trials, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was obtained on day 1 or 2, day 7, day 14 and day 21. Employing double immunofluorescence of BALF wit

Rhein kills Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, reduces biofilm formation, and effectively treats bacterial lung infections in mice.

Background. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, a member of the Pasteurellaceae family, is known for its highly infectious nature and is the primary causative agent of infectious pleuropneumonia in pigs. This disease poses a considerable threat to the global pig industry and leads to substantial economic losses due to reduced productivity, increased mortality rates, and the need for extensive veterinary care and treatment. Due to the emergence of multi-drug-resistant strains, Chinese herbal medicine is considered one of the best alternatives to antibiotics due to its unique mechanism of action an

Early sequential findings in the genitalia of rams experimentally infected with Actinobacillus seminis.

AIM: To investigate and assess the sequential pathological changes in the epididymis and testis of young rams injected intra-epididymally with Actinobacillus seminis. METHODS: Twenty yearling Suffolk and Suffolk-cross rams were randomly divided into two groups comprising 16 test and four control animals. Each test ram received 2.3 x 109 cfu/ml of A. seminis injected intra-epididymally. Every 24 h post-inoculation (p.i.), two test rams were randomly selected, euthanised, and necropsied, until the end of the experiment at 192 h p.i. One control animal was euthanised at 24 h, 48 h, 96 h and 144

Microbiological, molecular, and histopathological findings in goats experimentally infected with Actinobacillus seminis.

The objective of this study was to experimentally evaluate the pathogenicity of an Actinobacillus seminis isolate named SAAS01 in goats. Animals were challenged with 2 mL of a suspension containing 1,5 × 108 CFU/mL of A. seminis (SAAS01 isolate) through the intrapreputial, epididymis tail, and conjunctival routes. Epididymis and testicular fragments were submitted to histopathological exam, and semen samples underwent microbiological and molecular diagnoses. Clinically, a unilateral increase in firm consistency was observed in the epididymis and testicles of two animals inoculated in epididymi

Septicemic Actinobacillus suis infection in a neonatal piglet with multifocal necrotic glossitis.

Five-day-old neonatal piglets presented with debilitation and ananastasia. At the necropsy of one piglet, the apex of the tongue was found to be discolored dark red, and disseminated white foci were found on the cut surface. Many white foci were also found in the lungs and on the serosa of the liver and spleen. Histopathological findings revealed multifocal necrotic glossitis and pneumonia with Gram-negative bacilli. The bacilli were identified as Actinobacillus suis through immunohistochemical, biochemical, and genetic tests, including 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Although A. suis usually causes

Transmission of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae among weaned piglets on endemically infected farms.

Clinical outbreaks due to Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae occur recurrently, despite the wide-scale use of antimicrobials or vaccination. Therefore, new approaches for the prevention and control of these outbreaks are necessary. For the development of alternative measures, more insight into the transmission of the bacterium on farms is necessary. The aim of this cohort study was to quantify transmission of A. pleuropneumoniae amongst weaned piglets on farms. We investigated three possible transmission routes: (i) indirect transmission by infected piglets within the same compartment, (ii) trans

Clinical effects of scaling and root planing in adults infected with Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.

The periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans can frequently be isolated from subgingival plaque of adults with chronic inflammatory periodontal disease and individuals with plaque-induced gingivitis. Problems with the persistence of the organism after thorough debridement of root surfaces have been reported. In the present study clinical effects of the hygienic phase of periodontal therapy in ten adult patients with moderate or advanced periodontitis harbouring A. actinomycetemcomitans were analysed. Since proper analysis of highly correlated data within a given patient is cru
