[Actinomycetales in cutaneous pathology].

After discussing the classification of the Actinomycetales, the authors give a detailed description of the epidemiology and particularly of the clinical features of cutaneous diseases induced by genera such as Actinomyces, Norcardia and Streptomyces. Histopathological and immunological studies, together with laboratory and differential diagnostics, are also examined. In the last section, present therapeutic treatments are briefly outlined.

Actinomycetales infection in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Four parenteral drug abusers with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome had nonmycobacterial actinomycetales infections. Three patients had nocardiosis and one developed a streptomyces lymphadenitis. There was pericardial involvement in two patients, and two patients died. Presumptive diagnoses were often incorrect, highlighting the risks of empiric therapy in these patients. Four of the nine patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and nocardia or streptomyces infections whose cases were reported to the Centers for Disease Control also had mycobacterial disease. A common suscepti

Aerobic mineralization of vinyl chloride by a bacterium of the order Actinomycetales.

A gram-positive branched bacterium isolated from a trichloroethylene-degrading consortium mineralized vinyl chloride in growing cultures and cell suspensions. Greater than 67% of the [1,2-14C]vinyl chloride was mineralized to carbon dioxide, with approximately 10% of the radioactivity appearing in cell biomass and another 10% appearing in 14C-aqueous-phase products.

Actinomycetales infections in slender-horned gazelles: six cases (1987-1989).

Disseminated Actinomycetales infections were diagnosed in 6 slender-horned gazelles at a zoologic park over a 17-month period. Nocardia and Mycobacterium spp were isolated. Possible predisposing causes leading to infection were investigated. Environmental contamination where the gazelles were housed was not high, and other breeds of gazelles at the park did not become infected, indicating that environmental exposure was not the sole factor involved. Information gathered from questionnaires sent to other zoologic parks and personnel communications indicated that this was not an isolated inciden

Epidemiology and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of aerobic Actinomycetales in a clinical setting.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of infections caused by aerobic actinomycetes is increasing. Recent changes in taxonomy and the variability in susceptibility patterns among species make necessary a proper identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-three strains of aerobic actinomycetes were identified by MALDI-TOF MS using the VITEK MS Mycobacterium/Nocardia kit (bioMérieux, France) in a tertiary hospital in Spain during a six-year period. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the isolates was performed using the Sensititre Rapmycoi microdilution panel (Th

The Beneficial Effects of Actinomycetales Immune Modulators in the Pancreas of Diabetic Rats.

Purpose: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has dramatically increased in recent years, especially in young people, and limits the life quality of the patients involved. Thus, many researchers are performing extensive studies to find alternative treatments for DM. Methods: Here, we evaluated the improvement effects of the heat-killed Actinomycetales species, including Gordonia bronchialis, and Tsukamurella inchonensis in streptozotocin (STZ)- diabetic rats by biochemical, immunological, and histopathological examinations. Results: The present findings exhibited a dramatic and progressive alterati

Modulation of eukaryotic cell apoptosis by members of the bacterial order Actinomycetales.

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is normally responsible for the orderly elimination of aged or damaged cells, and is a necessary part of the homeostasis and development of multicellular organisms. Some pathogenic bacteria can disrupt this process by triggering excess apoptosis or by preventing it when appropriate. Either event can lead to disease. There has been extensive research into the modulation of host cell death by microorganisms, and several reviews have been published on the phenomenon. Rather than covering the entire field, this review focuses on the dysregulation of host cell a

Characterization of bafilomycin biosynthesis in Kitasatospora setae KM-6054 and comparative analysis of gene clusters in Actinomycetales microorganisms.

Bafilomycins A1, C1 and B1 (setamycin) produced by Kitasatospora setae KM-6054 belong to the plecomacrolide family, which exhibit antibacterial, antifungal, antineoplastic and immunosuppressive activities. An analysis of gene clusters from K. setae KM-6054 governing the biosynthesis of bafilomycins revealed that it contains five large open reading frames (ORFs) encoding the multifunctional polypeptides of bafilomycin polyketide synthases (PKSs). These clustered PKS genes, which are responsible for bafilomycin biosynthesis, together encode 11 homologous sets of enzyme activities, each catalyzin

Long-term ferrocyanide application via deicing salts promotes the establishment of Actinomycetales assimilating ferrocyanide-derived carbon in soil.

Cyanides are highly toxic and produced by various microorganisms as defence strategy or to increase their competitiveness. As degradation is the most efficient way of detoxification, some microbes developed the capability to use cyanides as carbon and nitrogen source. However, it is not clear if this potential also helps to lower cyanide concentrations in roadside soils where deicing salt application leads to significant inputs of ferrocyanide. The question remains if biodegradation in soils can occur without previous photolysis. By conducting a microcosm experiment using soils with/without pr

Evidence of differential microbiomes in healing versus non-healing diabetic foot ulcers prior to and following foot salvage therapy.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) contribute to 80% of lower extremity amputations. Although physicians currently rely on clinical signs along with non-specific biomarkers of infection, such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein, to diagnose and monitor DFU, there is no specific and sensitive measure available to monitor or prognosticate the success of foot salvage therapy (FST). To address this we performed a prospective, observational microbiome analysis to test the hypotheses that: (i) the initial microbiomes of healed versus non-healed DFU are distinct; (ii) the microbial load,

Actinomycosis, nocardiosis, and actinomycetoma.

Cases of actinomycosis, nocardiosis, and actinomycetoma are seen infrequently but consistently in the United States. When they are found, diagnosis can be difficult because of their resemblance to other bacterial, mycobacterial, and fungal infections. This article reviews the clinical presentation, therapy, and laboratory diagnosis of these actinomycetales.

Nocardia gypsoides corneal ulcer.

Nocardia gypsoides, a species characterised by its ability to produce calcium sulphate granules, has been isolated for the first time from a corneal ulcer. In vivo this pseudomycete also forms gypsum. Every effort should be made to identify Actinomycetales to species level. The names Leptothrix and Streptothrix should be abandoned.

Palatal Actinomycosis and Kaposi Sarcoma in an HIV-Infected Subject with Disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare Infection.

Actinomyces and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare are facultative intracellular organisms, members of the bacterial order actinomycetales. Although Actinomyces can behave as copathogen when anatomic barriers are compromised, its coinfection with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare has not previously been reported. We present the first reported case of palatal actinomycosis co-infection with disseminated MAC, in an HIV-infected subject with Kaposi sarcoma and diabetes. We discuss the pathogenesis of the complex condition of this subject.

Bilateral actinomycotic blepharokeratoconjunctivitis.

Actinomycotic conjunctivitis is usually unilateral and secondary to canaliculitis. We report an unusual case of bilateral actinomycotic blepharokeratoconjunctivitis in the absence of canaliculitis. Keratitis occurred without any preceding ocular trauma. Both eyes had remissions and relapses in response to the antibiotic-steroid drops. Diagnosis of A. israelii infection was made on the basis of Gram staining, culture and biochemical characteristics. Complete excision of the conjunctival ulcer along with penicillin therapy resulted in cure. This case highlights that microorganisms of the order A

Actinomycetoma by Cellulosimicrobium cellulans in a Young Man from Guinea-Bissau: Short Literature Review Regarding a Case Report.

Mycetoma is caused by the subcutaneous inoculation of filamentous fungi or aerobic filamentous bacteria. Cellulosimicrobium cellulans is a gram-positive bacterium from the order Actinomycetales that rarely causes human disease. The diagnosis is based on the clinical presentation and identification of the causative microorganism. We present a short literature review regarding the case report of a young man diagnosed with actinomycetoma due to Cellulosimicrobium cellulans and who received treatment with an association of amikacin and sulfamethoxazole/ trimethoprim (Welsh regimen).

Pulmonary streptomyces infection in patient with sarcoidosis, France, 2012.

TO THE EDITOR: Streptomyces spp. are aerobic, gram-positive bacteria of the order Actinomycetales, known for their ability to produce antimicrobial molecules such as streptomycin. Streptomyces spp., usually saprophytic to humans, can cause local cutaneous fistulized nodules known as actinomycetoma or mycetoma. Severe invasive infections have seldom been reported, but most cases reported have occurred in immunocompromised patients (1-5). We report a case of invasive pulmonary infection caused by a Streptomyces sp. in a splenectomized patient with sarcoidosis.
