Ocular stability and set-point adaptation.

A fundamental challenge to the brain is how to prevent intrusive movements when quiet is needed. Unwanted limb movements such as tremor impair fine motor control and unwanted eye drifts such as nystagmus impair vision. A stable platform is also necessary to launch accurate movements. Accordingly, nature has designed control systems with agonist (excitation) and antagonist (inhibition) muscle pairs functioning in push-pull, around a steady level of balanced tonic activity, the set-point Sensory information can be organized similarly, as in the vestibulo-ocular reflex, which generates eye moveme

Saccade and vestibular ocular motor adaptation.

PURPOSE: This paper focuses on motor learning within the saccadic and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) oculomotor systems, vital for our understanding how the brain keeps these subsystems calibrated in the presence of disease, trauma, and the changes that invariably accompany normal development and aging. We will concentrate on new information related to multiple time scales of saccade motor learning, adaptation of the VOR during high-velocity impulses, and the role of saccades in VOR adaptation. The role of the cerebellum in both systems is considered. METHODS: Review of data involving saccade

Adaptation to telescopic spectacles: vestibulo-ocular reflex plasticity.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is a mechanism for the production of rapid compensatory eye movements during head movements. To investigate the adaptation of this reflex to spectacle magnifiers, the effect on the VOR of a brief period of wearing telescopic spectacles during head rotation was studied in normal subjects. VOR gain, as measured in darkness, was defined to be the ratio of compensatory slow phase eye velocity to head velocity. Initial VOR gain as measured for vertical axis sinusoidal head rotation at 0.1 Hz, amplitude 60 degrees/sec, was about 0.7. After 15 min adaptation by sinus

Developing a Measure to Quantify Ocular Pain Postoperatively: The Adaptation of the Ocular Pain Assessment Survey.

PURPOSE: Since quantification and communication of ocular pain is important for a healthier patient follow-up and postoperative guidance, reliable measures like the Ophthalmic Pain Assessment Survey (OPAS) are needed to assess the outcome and management of different operations. To address that need, we carried out the adaptation of OPAS into Turkish to reach different age groups and backgrounds, widening the use of OPAS on patients who underwent an ophthalmic operation. METHODS: We used back-translation method and achieved cultural adaptation through content validity scoring by 5 independent

Adaptations and deficits in the vestibulo-ocular reflex after peripheral ocular motor palsies.

Palsy of a nerve might be expected to lower vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) responses in its fields of motion, but effects of peripheral neuromuscular disease were unknown. We recorded the VOR during sinusoidal head rotations in yaw, pitch, and roll at 0.5-2 Hz and static torsional gain in 43 patients with unilateral nerve palsies. Sixth nerve palsy (n = 21) reduced both abduction and adduction VOR gains in darkness. In light, horizontal visually enhanced VOR (VVOR) gains were normal in moderate and mild palsy. In severe palsy, horizontal VVOR gains remained low in the paretic eye when it was fi

Adapting to blur produced by ocular high-order aberrations.

The perceived focus of an image can be strongly biased by prior adaptation to a blurred or sharpened image. We examined whether these adaptation effects can occur for the natural patterns of retinal image blur produced by high-order aberrations (HOAs) in the optics of the eye. Focus judgments were measured for 4 subjects to estimate in a forced choice procedure (sharp/blurred) their neutral point after adaptation to different levels of blur produced by scaled increases or decreases in their HOAs. The optical blur was simulated by convolution of the PSFs from the 4 different HOA patterns, with

Effects of adaptation of vestibulo-ocular reflex function on manual target localization.

The goal of the present study was to determine if adaptive modulation of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) function is associated with commensurate alterations in manual target localization. To measure the effects of adapted VOR on manual responses we developed the Vestibular-Contingent Pointing Test (VCP). In the VCP test, subjects pointed to a remembered target following passive whole body rotation in the dark. In the first experiment, subjects performed VCP before and after wearing 0.5X minifying lenses that adaptively attenuate horizontal VOR gain. Results showed that adaptive reduction in hor

Transiently worse postural effects after vestibulo-ocular reflex gain-down adaptation in healthy adults.

Suffering an acute asymmetry in vestibular function (i.e., vestibular neuritis) causes increased sway. Non-causal studies report associations between lateral semicircular canal function and balance ability, but direct links remain controversial. We investigate the immediate effect on body sway after unilateral vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain down adaptation simulating acute peripheral vestibular hypofunction. Eighteen healthy adults, mean age 27.4 (± 12.4), stood wearing an inertial measurement device with their eyes closed on foam before and after incremental VOR gain down adaptation to si

On the Maintenance of Normal Ocular Dominance and a Possible Mechanism Underlying Refractive Adaptation.

PURPOSE: Do humans with uncorrected anisometropia who have not developed anisometropic amblyopia exhibit a shift in ocular dominance nonetheless, reflecting a more subtle form of deprivation? Also, is such a change in dominance, if it occurs, permanent or could it be rectified by an extended period of optical correction? METHODS: A total of 25 normal controls (27.5 ± 2.1 years; mean ± SD); 28 anisometropes (20.7 ± 5.6 years) who were fully corrected for more than 16 weeks prior to this investigation; and 24 anisometropes who had never been corrected (21.2 ± 9.8 years) participated in this stu

Adaptations and deficits in the vestibulo-ocular reflex after sixth nerve palsy.

PURPOSE: The effects of paralytic strabismus on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) have not been systematically investigated in humans. The purpose of this study was to analyze the VOR in patients with unilateral peripheral sixth nerve palsy. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with unilateral peripheral sixth nerve palsy (6 severe, 7 moderate, 8 mild) and 15 normal subjects were studied. Subjects made sinusoidal +/-10 degrees head-on-body rotations in yaw and pitch at approximately 0.5 and 2 Hz, and in roll at approximately 0.5, 1, and 2 Hz. Eye movement recordings were obtained using magnetic scler

Spanish Cross-Cultural Adaptation, Rasch Analysis and Validation of the Ocular Comfort Index (OCI) Questionnaire.

The Ocular Comfort Index (OCI) assesses ocular surface irritation and grades the severity of dry eye disease. This study sought to adapt the OCI questionnaire into Spanish, and then to assess the psychometric performance and validity of the new adapted version (OCI-versión española, OCIVE). The questionnaire was translated, back translated, and then cross-culturally adapted for use with Spanish-speaking individuals. The OCIVE was completed by 450 participants, including 53 subjects that were diagnosed with dry eye disease. Through a Rasch analysis, the psychometric properties of item fit, targ

Adaptation of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex to head movements in rotating frames of reference.

Head movements in a rotating frame of reference are commonly encountered, but their long term effects on the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) are not well understood. To study this, monkeys were oscillated about a naso-occipital (roll) axis for several hours while rotating about a spatial vertical axis (roll-while-rotating, RWR). This induced oscillations in roll and pitch eye velocity and continuous horizontal (yaw) nystagmus. For several hours thereafter, simple roll in darkness induced horizontal nystagmus and pitch and roll oscillations. The rising and falling time constants of the h

Negligible contribution of adaptation of ocular opponency neurons to the effect of short-term monocular deprivation.

INTRODUCTION: Modeling work on binocular rivalry has described how ocular opponency neurons represent interocular conflict. These neurons have recently been considered to mediate an ocular dominance shift to the eye that has viewed a backward movie for long during which time the other eye is presented with a regular movie. Unlike typical short-term monocular deprivation, the visual inputs are comparable across eyes in that "dichoptic-backward-movie" paradigm. Therefore, it remains unclear whether the ocular opponency neurons are also responsible for the short-term monocular deprivation effect

An adaptive drug-releasing contact lens for personalized treatment of ocular infections and injuries.

This research introduces an innovative solution to address the challenges of bacterial keratitis and alkali burns. Current treatments for bacterial keratitis and alkali burns rely on the frequent use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. However, these approaches suffer from poor bioavailability and fluctuating concentrations, leading to limited efficacy and potential drug resistance. Our approach presents an adaptive drug-releasing contact lens responsive to reactive oxygen species (ROS) at ocular inflammation sites, synchronously releasing Levofloxacin and Diclofenac. Gait Adaptability and the Effect of Ocular Disorders on Visually Guided Walking in Parkinson's Disease.

Gait disorders are a disabling feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). To avoid falls, people with PD should be able to adequately adapt their gait. This requires correct response inhibition and integration of visual information. In this small pilot study, we investigated PD-related impairments in gait adaptability and the influence of ocular disorders thereon. Compared with controls, persons with PD were less able to adapt their gait in unexpected situations (U = 21.5, p = 0.013), with only a small influence of ocular disorders on precision stepping (U = 6, p = 0.012 in the ML-direction and in t
