Physiological constraints on heat adaptation in birds.

Rising global temperatures and compound climatic extremes outpace avian thermoregulatory capacity. Yet, heat tolerance has been studied in only 1-2% of birds, mostly from the southern subtropics. The field requires research in two main areas. First, temperature and humidity must be considered in unison, and we provide a guiding, biophysical, framework for how these factors interact across climates. Second, we need experiments integrating ecology, evolution, and physiology. To that end, we introduce a life-history model relating thermoregulatory effort and the accumulation of heat-related damag

Brain Physiological Response and Adaptation During Spaceflight.

More than half of astronauts returning from long-duration missions on the International Space Station present with neuro-ocular structural and/or functional changes, including optic disc edema, optic nerve sheath distension, globe flattening, choroidal folds, or hyperopic shifts. This spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) represents a major risk to future exploration class human spaceflight missions, including Mars missions. Although the exact pathophysiology of SANS is unknown, evidence thus far suggests that an increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) relative to the upright pos

Physiological adaptation of the growth-restricted fetus.

The growth-restricted fetus in utero is exposed to a hostile environment and suffers undernutrition and hypoxia. To cope with the stress, the fetus changes its physiological functions. These adaptive changes aid intrauterine survival; however, they can lead to permanent functional and structural changes that can contribute to the development of serious chronic diseases later in life. Epigenetic mechanisms are an important part of the pathophysiological processes behind this "developmental origin of adult diseases." The dominant cardiovascular adaptive change is the redistribution of blood flow

Physiological adaptation in early human pregnancy: adaptation to balance maternal-fetal demands.

After conception, the corpus luteum, placenta, and developing embryo release hormones, growth factors, and other substances into the maternal circulation. These substances trigger a cascade of events that transform the functioning of the maternal cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal systems, which in turn alter the physicochemical determinants of [H(+)]. Following implantation, maternal adaptations fulfill 4 important functions that support fetal growth. Increased availability of substrates and precursors for fetal-placental metabolism and hormone production is mediated by increases in dieta

[Physiology and physiopathology of postnatal pulmonary adaptation. 1: Physiology].

The aim of the review consists of the help to understand the complex physiological mechanisms of the onset of breathing and the regulation of the respiration during the early newborn period. The lungs of the newborn contain nearly no alveoli. Postnatal formation of alveoli enlarges the gas exchange surface until the 20th year of life, the lung volume increases by a factor of 27. Immediately postnatal the aeration of the lungs is performed by several deep inspirations with breath hold and following crying. The fetal lung liquid is resorbed via both, lymph and blood vessels. Stability of the fun

Integrating molecular networks and physiological adaptation for heat-resilient crops.

As global temperatures increase, heat stress has become a key limiting factor affecting crop yield and quality. Against the backdrop of growing global food demand and increasingly frequent extreme high-temperature events, this dual pressure poses a threat to global food security. This review systematically analyzes the physiological effects of heat on major crops, focusing on source-sink relationships and nutrient transport processes. We summarize key heat-related genes identified in these crops through forward and reverse genetic approaches, elucidating the mechanisms underlying heat signal p

Physiological Adaptation Buffers Personality-Linked Psychopathology Under High-Altitude Hypoxia.

PURPOSE: High-altitude hypoxia imposes persistent physiological stress that may influence psychological health. While personality traits such as neuroticism are known predictors of psychological symptom burden, little is known about whether physiological adaptation-specifically hematologic compensation-is associated with personality-related differences in psychological symptoms under chronically hypoxic conditions. METHODS: Healthy adults residing at high altitude completed the Chinese version of the Big Five Inventory-2 and provided blood data for RBC, HGB, and HCT. k-Means clustering identi

Physiological adaptation of Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain TCE1 to tetrachloroethene respiration.

Desulfitobacterium spp. are ubiquitous organisms with a broad metabolic versatility, and some isolates have the ability to use tetrachloroethene (PCE) as terminal electron acceptor. In order to identify proteins involved in this organohalide respiration process, a comparative proteomic analysis was performed. Soluble and membrane-associated proteins obtained from cells of Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain TCE1 that were growing on different combinations of the electron donors lactate and hydrogen and the electron acceptors PCE and fumarate were analyzed. Among proteins increasingly expressed

Molecular aspects of oxygen sensing in physiological adaptation to hypoxia.

Oxygen is an essential substrate in aerobic metabolism for most eukaryotic organisms. Thus organisms and cells have developed numerous immediate and long-term compensatory mechanisms for dealing with oxygen deprivation. Adaptation to hypoxia at the organismal level includes reflex hyperventilation, polycythemia and angiogenesis, which lead to increased O2 delivery to the tissues. Adaptation at the cellular level involves a shift from oxidative phosphorylation to anaerobic glycolysis, increased glucose metabolism, and expression of hypoxic stress-related proteins. Regulation of many proteins pa

Physiological mechanisms and adaptation in high-performance shooting: a biomarker review.

Precision shooting depends on the coordinated integration of multiple psychophysiological systems. This review summarizes the current literature on quantifiable biomarkers associated with high performance in shooting sports, examining neural, cardiac, oculomotor, muscular, postural, and respiratory activity. Special attention is given to individual variability in postural control and sensorimotor integration as key factors distinguishing expert from novice shooters. Electroencephalographic studies show that experienced shooters exhibit characteristic patterns of cortical activity, including le

RNA Processing in Cardiac Hypertrophy: Coordinating Physiological Adaptation and Pathological Remodeling.

Cardiac hypertrophy represents a complex remodeling process involving extensive reprogramming of gene expression. While transcriptional regulation has been well characterized, post-transcriptional RNA processing has recently emerged as a crucial determinant of cardiac homeostasis. This review summarizes current knowledge of RNA modifications, alternative splicing, mRNA stability, and RNA editing in physiological and pathological hypertrophy. We highlight key epitranscriptomic marks such as N6-methyladenosine (m6A), 5-methylcytosine (m5C), and 7-methylguanosine (m7G), as well as the functions o

Physiological adaptation of the jugular venous pulse during long-duration spaceflight.

The jugular venous pulse (JVP) offers a non-invasive window into right atrial pressure. In microgravity, the serial JVP waveform during long-duration spaceflight had never been characterised. Using ECG-synchronised high-resolution ultrasound and a validated AI model, we quantified internal jugular vein cross-sectional area (IJV-CSA) throughout the cardiac cycle in four astronauts before and after flight, with in-flight measurements in one astronaut. Mean IJV-CSA fell significantly post-flight in three astronauts (ASTRO 0: from 0.723 ± 0.076 to 0.453 ± 0.061 cm2, ASTRO 2: - 46.0%, ASTRO 3: - 48

The physiology of dark adaptation: Progress and future directions.

Exposure of the eye to bright bleaching light produces a large decrease in photoreceptor sensitivity, followed by a slow return during adaptation to darkness. Although much progress has been made understanding the nature of this phenomenon, particularly its biochemistry, less is known about the physiology of dark adaptation. In this review, we summarize the evidence for desensitization produced by photoproducts of bleaching, especially apo-opsin, that is opsin without bound chromophore. We describe the relationship between these studies and diseases such as vitamin A deprivation and congenital

Nutrition and human physiological adaptations to space flight.

Space flight provides a model for the study of healthy individuals undergoing unique stresses. This review focuses on how physiological adaptations to weightlessness may affect nutrient and food requirements in space. These adaptations include reductions in body water and plasma volume, which affect the renal and cardiovascular systems and thereby fluid and electrolyte requirements. Changes in muscle mass and function may affect requirements for energy, protein and amino acids. Changes in bone mass lead to increased urinary calcium concentrations, which may increase the risk of forming renal s

Autophagy modulates physiologic and adaptive response in the liver.

Autophagy is a physiological process that is ubiquitous and essential to the disposal or recycling of damaged cellular organelles and misfolded proteins to maintain organ homeostasis and survival. Its importance in the regulation of liver function in normal and pathological conditions is increasingly recognized. This review summarizes how autophagy regulates epithelial cell- and non-epithelial cell-specific function in the liver and how it differentially participates in hepatic homeostasis, hepatic injury response to stress-induced liver damage such as cholestasis, sepsis, non-alcoholic and al

Physiological and Genetic Adaptations to Diving in Sea Nomads.

Understanding the physiology and genetics of human hypoxia tolerance has important medical implications, but this phenomenon has thus far only been investigated in high-altitude human populations. Another system, yet to be explored, is humans who engage in breath-hold diving. The indigenous Bajau people ("Sea Nomads") of Southeast Asia live a subsistence lifestyle based on breath-hold diving and are renowned for their extraordinary breath-holding abilities. However, it is unknown whether this has a genetic basis. Using a comparative genomic study, we show that natural selection on genetic vari

Physiological adaptations to velocity-controlled resistance training.

The force-velocity characteristics of skeletal muscle are such that maximal force is inversely related to the velocity of shortening. This relationship has been observed using isolated muscle preparations and intact muscle groups (e.g. knee extensors). Isokinetic dynamometry has revealed some specific physiological adaptations to different velocities of training: an increase in torque and power that are greater at or near the velocity of training; a transfer of torque gains to slower and faster angular velocities after intermediate velocity resistance training; increases in maximal oxygen cons
