Adaptive Algorithms for DPOAE Level-Map Acquisition.

Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) are intermodulation products stimulated by two tones and reflect the nonlinear mechanical processing within the inner ear by the so-called cochlear amplifier. Therefore, they are interpreted as a diagnostic measure of its functional state. Due to their small amplitudes and the correspondingly long averaging time, current clinical systems measure one DPOAE amplitude at approximately seven fixed frequencies, representing a one-dimensional (1D) scan. More advanced systems record input-output functions of the distortion-product amplitudes, where bot

Biomarkers and Stimulation Algorithms for Adaptive Brain Stimulation.

The goal of this review is to describe in what ways feedback or adaptive stimulation may be delivered and adjusted based on relevant biomarkers. Specific treatment mechanisms underlying therapeutic brain stimulation remain unclear, in spite of the demonstrated efficacy in a number of nervous system diseases. Brain stimulation appears to exert widespread influence over specific neural networks that are relevant to specific disease entities. In awake patients, activation or suppression of these neural networks can be assessed by either symptom alleviation (i.e., tremor, rigidity, seizures) or ph

Adaptive bandit algorithms increase efficiency of mobile tuberculosis screening programs.

Community-based tuberculosis screening using mobile X-ray units can effectively increase case detection rates by reducing barriers to accessing services. This study evaluated the multi-armed bandit (MAB) framework, a machine learning approach, for optimizing mobile screening locations. Using simulations, we compared two MAB algorithms-Exp3 and LinUCB-with strategies based on historical case rates and random placement. The MAB algorithms continually updated site selection based on observed screening yields, and LinUCB additionally incorporated local socioeconomic indicators associated with tube

Control Algorithms for Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease.

Thirty years on from the introduction of deep brain stimulation as a therapy for Parkinson's disease, adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) is poised to transform neural stimulation for the treatment of motor disorders. Implementation of aDBS has been facilitated by the identification of biomarkers that reflect patients' clinical states and the introduction of hardware allowing simultaneous sensing and stimulation. However, the most appropriate algorithms for aDBS remain unclear. This review provides an overview of control algorithms used in computational, animal and human studies of aDBS in

Positive airway pressure therapy with adaptive servoventilation: part 1: operational algorithms.

The beginning of the 21st century witnessed the advent of new positive airway pressure (PAP) technologies for the treatment of central and complex (mixtures of obstructive and central) sleep apnea syndromes. Adaptive servoventilation (ASV) devices applied noninvasively via mask that act to maintain a stable level of ventilation regardless of mechanism are now widely available. These PAP devices function by continually measuring either minute ventilation or airflow to calculate a target ventilation to be applied as needed. The apparatus changes inspiratory PAP on an ongoing basis to maintain th

Genetic algorithms for adaptive psychophysical procedures: recipient-directed design of speech-processor MAPs.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of the research is to evaluate the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) in listener-directed optimization of audio-processing designs. We hypothesize that cochlear-implant recipients can use a GA-guided adaptive psychophysical search procedure to select useful designs from among a large number of speech processor MAPS. DESIGN: An adaptive psychophysical procedure was developed in which a listener's preferred four out of eight speech processor MAPs were updated according to a genetic algorithm. Experiments involving cochlear-implant recipients were conducted to characte

Pregnancy-adapted YEARS Algorithm: A Retrospective Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an imperative diagnosis to make given its associated morbidity. There is no current consensus in the initial workup of pregnant patients suspected of a PE. Prospective studies have been conducted in Europe using a pregnancy-adapted YEARS algorithm, which showed safe reductions in computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) imaging in pregnant patients suspected of PE. Our objective in this study was 1) to measure the potential avoidance of CTPA use in pregnant patients if the pregnancy-adapted YEARS algorithm had been applied and 2) to serve as an

LoAd: a locally adaptive cortical segmentation algorithm.

Thickness measurements of the cerebral cortex can aid diagnosis and provide valuable information about the temporal evolution of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and schizophrenia. Methods that measure the thickness of the cerebral cortex from in-vivo magnetic resonance (MR) images rely on an accurate segmentation of the MR data. However, segmenting the cortex in a robust and accurate way still poses a challenge due to the presence of noise, intensity non-uniformity, partial volume effects, the limited resolution of MRI and the highly convoluted shape of the cortical folds. Development of Control Algorithms for an Adaptive Running Platform for a Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation System.

An essential component of modern musculoskeletal rehabilitation systems is treadmills of various sizes, the control of which may rely either on manual adjustment of treadmill speed, fixed for the entire training session, or on automatic regulation based on analysis of the user's movements and velocity. The aim of this study was to experimentally compare the control functions of an adaptive treadmill designed for musculoskeletal rehabilitation and to assess the influence of the hardware configuration and tracking systems on user stability and the smoothness of transient processes. Two running p

Beyond Bio-Inspired Algorithms: Using Bird Landing Dynamics to Design Adaptive Parameter Control in Metaheuristics.

Bio-inspiration has mainly been used to represent organisms, behaviors, or natural processes in the design of metaheuristics. This study proposes a different use: drawing on a biological phenomenon to model the temporal evolution of an internal parameter in an existing algorithm. Logarithmic Mean Optimization (LMO) is adopted as a case study, focusing on β, which scales the stochastic perturbation term and regulates the balance between exploration and exploitation. Inspired by the progressive transition observed during bird landing, a normalized arctangent trajectory controlled by m and k is p

A smart pen prototype with adaptive algorithms for stabilizing handwriting tremor signals in Parkinson's disease.

This study presents a smart pen prototype designed to dynamically mitigate hand tremors, thereby enhancing writing quality and user comfort for individuals with conditions such as Parkinson's disease. The device employs an accelerometer for real-time tremor detection, a microcontroller for rapid data processing, and a vibration motor to counteract tremor effects. Adaptive algorithms-including Fx-LMS, Fx-NLMS, a combined Fx-LMS/NLMS approach, RLS, and the Kalman Filter-were evaluated using signals from the NewHandPD dataset. Simulation results revealed that although the RLS algorithm achieved t

Improved Gravitational Search Algorithm Based on Adaptive Strategies.

The gravitational search algorithm is a global optimization algorithm that has the advantages of a swarm intelligence algorithm. Compared with traditional algorithms, the performance in terms of global search and convergence is relatively good, but the solution is not always accurate, and the algorithm has difficulty jumping out of locally optimal solutions. In view of these shortcomings, an improved gravitational search algorithm based on an adaptive strategy is proposed. The algorithm uses the adaptive strategy to improve the updating methods for the distance between particles, gravitational

An adaptive gyroscope-based algorithm for temporal gait analysis.

Body-worn kinematic sensors have been widely proposed as the optimal solution for portable, low cost, ambulatory monitoring of gait. This study aims to evaluate an adaptive gyroscope-based algorithm for automated temporal gait analysis using body-worn wireless gyroscopes. Gyroscope data from nine healthy adult subjects performing four walks at four different speeds were then compared against data acquired simultaneously using two force plates and an optical motion capture system. Data from a poliomyelitis patient, exhibiting pathological gait walking with and without the aid of a crutch, were

An Adaptive Algorithm for Detection of Arterial Blood Pressure Pulses.

Clinically relevant cardiovascular system metrics can either be directly measured (e.g., systolic and diastolic pressure) or estimated (e.g., arterial compliance and resistance) from arterial blood pressure waveforms. Accurate characterization of such information requires identification of each individual arterial pressure pulse. This task is difficult due to variability in pulse morphology over time and throughout the arterial tree. While various pulse detection methods have been developed, many rely on arbitrary rules and thresholds or are computationally complex. We propose a simple real-ti

Introducing a workflow algorithm for adaptive DBS programming in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) utilizing BrainSense™ technology by Medtronic Percept™ stimulator, is a recent advancement that dynamically adjusts stimulation in real-time based on the power of frequency-specific neural signals. Although clinical trials have shown the feasibility of aDBS, real-world implementation remains underreported. We describe the development and implementation of a structured workflow for aDBS activation and programming at a tertiary movement disorders center. METHODS: This quality improvement project included the first 50 patients with Parkinson's d

An Adaptive Track Segmentation Algorithm for a Railway Intrusion Detection System.

Video surveillance-based intrusion detection has been widely used in modern railway systems. Objects inside the alarm region, or the track area, can be detected by image processing algorithms. With the increasing number of surveillance cameras, manual labeling of alarm regions for each camera has become time-consuming and is sometimes not feasible at all, especially for pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras which may change their monitoring area at any time. To automatically label the track area for all cameras, video surveillance system requires an accurate track segmentation algorithm with small memor

Pregnancy-Adapted YEARS Algorithm for Diagnosis of Suspected Pulmonary Embolism.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary embolism is one of the leading causes of maternal death in the Western world. Because of the low specificity and sensitivity of the d-dimer test, all pregnant women with suspected pulmonary embolism undergo computed tomographic (CT) pulmonary angiography or ventilation-perfusion scanning, both of which involve radiation exposure to the mother and fetus. Whether a pregnancy-adapted algorithm could be used to safely avoid diagnostic imaging in pregnant women with suspected pulmonary embolism is unknown. METHODS: In a prospective study involving pregnant women with suspecte

An adaptive optimal viewing angle determination algorithm for TEVAR operation.

BACKGROUND: The determination of the right x-ray angiography viewing angle is an important issue during the treatment of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). An inaccurate projection angle (manually determined today by the physicians according to their personal experience) may affect the placement of the stent and cause vascular occlusion or endoleak. METHODS: Based on the acquisition of a computed tomography angiography (CTA) image before TEVAR, an adaptive optimization algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal viewing angle of the angiogram automatically. This optimal view aims
