Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) of the lung is a rare disease. It is about an abnormal proliferation of mesenchymal elements and failure of maturation of bronchiolar structures, characterized by the replacement of normal pulmonary tissue with "cysts" in variable size and number. These lesions communicate with the tracheobronchial tree. During fetal period hydrops and polyhydramnios can be associated with CCAM. A cystic adenomatoid malformation can be detected by antenatal ultrasound, and, at the birth, it is confirmed by chest radiography. From January 1990 to December 1998,

OBJECTIVE: Sheep pulmonary adenocarcinoma (SPA), a chronic contagious lung neoplasm induced by jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV), represents a unique animal model for studying virus-driven lung carcinogenesis. This study aimed to systematically dissect host transcriptional reprogramming in naturally infected lung tissues using whole-transcriptome sequencing and to identify core regulatory factors associated with SPA pathogenesis.
METHODS: Lung tumor tissues from naturally SPA-infected sheep and matched healthy lung tissues were collected as experimental samples. High-throughput whole-transcr

A survey of sheep with chronic respiratory tract disease was conducted in the central sierra of Peru. Histopathologic examinations coupled with an agar-gel immunodiffusion test for ovine progressive pneumonia (OPP) revealed that sheep pulmonary adenomatosis and OPP were present in these flocks. Of 80 sheep examined, 22 had lesions of sheep pulmonary adenomatosis, and 4 had metastases to regional lymph nodes. Four sheep had lesions consistent with OPP and 9 had lesions indicating the coexistence of both diseases. The agar-gel immunodiffusion test revealed that at least 26% of the sheep had been

Microscopic examination of pneumonic lungs of the Ethiopian highland sheep (n = 35) was made and compared with the pneumonic lungs from ten sheep and 66 goats from the lowlands. Lesions compatible with sheep pulmonary adenomatosis (SPA; 8/35, 22.8%), and maedi-visna (MV; 9/35, 25.7%) were recorded only in sheep from the central highlands. Interstitial pneumonia (43.2%), bronchopneumonia (35.1%), and verminous pneumonia (6.3%) were recorded in both sheep and goats from the high- and the lowlands. SPA was documented for the first time in sheep from Ethiopia in this report. We believe that MV and

Ovine pulmonary adenomatosis (OPA) is a contagious pulmonary tumor of sheep caused by Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus, whereas Maedi is a chronic lentiviral infection characterized by persistent pulmonary inflammation. Although both diseases affect the lung, their interaction during natural co-infection remains poorly understood. This study investigated how chronic Maedi infection may influence inflammatory, oncogenic, and apoptotic signaling pathways in OPA-affected lung tissue. Lung samples from naturally infected sheep were classified by PCR and histopathological examination into Maedi (n = 6),

Surfactant covers the inner surface of lung alveoli and lowers the surface tension to prevent alveoli from collapsing. A lack of surfactant or its dysfunction causes dyspnea. The Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus (JSRV) causes ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA), whose typical clinical appearance is fluid running from nostrils. This fluid might contain surfactant as alveolar type II pneumocytes (AEII) are target cells for JSRV. Therefore, the progressive dyspnea during OPA might be caused partially by surfactant alterations. Bronchoalveolar and intracellular surfactant as well as the biophysical fu

The clinical and histopathological findings are presented in two cases of diffuse interstitial pulmonary fibrosis in which carcinoma of the lung developed. In one case with rheumatoid arthritis and diffuse interstitial pulmonary fibrosis there was ;malignant pulmonary adenomatosis', an association which does not appear to have been reported before. In the second case idiopathic diffuse interstitial pulmonary fibrosis was complicated by large cell anaplastic carcinoma of the lung. It is suggested that in both cases the development of carcinoma of the lung was a complication of the epithelial hy

Betaretrovirus-induced transmissible respiratory tumors in sheep arise at 2 distinct anatomic locations, either deep in the lung tissue caused by jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) or in the nasal cavity induced by ovine enzootic nasal tumor virus (ENTV-1). JSRV and ENTV-1 are found in many countries worldwide and have a significant economic and animal health impact. Although JSRV is endemic in sheep in the British Isles, ENTV-1 has not been reported. We report herein a nasal adenocarcinoma in a cull 8-y-old Belclare ewe from Ireland. The gross and microscopic features and immunohistochemistry

Visceral leishmaniasis is not unusual in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), but lung infiltration is uncommon. Leishmaniasis involving the lung often manifests as interstitial pneumonitis. We report a case in which the discovery of amastigotes in the transbronchial biopsy led to a diagnosis of leishmaniasis. However, the findings from x-rays and study of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were consistent with bronchiolitis obliterans, possibly caused by the AIDS virus. In addition, the transbronchial biopsy findings were consistent with a diagnosis of bronchioloalveolar ade

Contrary to conditions in human pathology, primary pulmonary neoplasms are rare in animals. The so-called pulmonary adenomatosis of sheep (PAS) is of greater importance among the epithelial lung tumors of domestic animals. PAS is a chronic, lethal pneumopathy caused by an oncogenic retrovirus. It is associated with the category of slow virus infections for its extremely long incubation period. PAS is characterized as a primary multicentric epithelial neoplasm which develops from proliferating alveolar pneumocytes II and non-ciliated bronchial epithelial cells. It has been recently classified a

Following the discovery that a flock of sheep in England was infected with the virus of maedi-virus, several seropositive sheep were brought to the Central Veterinary Laboratory and kept isolated and under observation for up to three years before being further examined at necropsy. Meanwhile, sheep in the infected flock which died or were culled were examined after death for evidence of the actual disease. At necropsy pulmonary disease was a common (although not always the sole) finding, the lesions being mostly chronic pasteurellosis and pulmonary adenomatosis. One of the 45 carcases examined

In the course of attempts to grow the jaagsiekte retrovirus in cell culture, a typical lentivirus was isolated for the first time in South Africa from adenomatous lungs. Morphologically the virus could not be distinguished from other lentiviruses, but serologically it was shown to be more closely related to visna virus than to caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus. However, a preliminary restriction enzyme analysis of the linear proviral DNA of this new lentivirus (SA-DMVV) revealed that it is significantly district from visna virus and CAEV and therefore may represent a third type of lentiviru

Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA), caused by Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV), is a contagious neoplastic pulmonary disease of sheep. Early OPA diagnosis is challenging as the disease can remain subclinical until advanced disease. Lung ultrasound offers the potential of identifying OPA lesions as small as 1-2 cm in diameter involving the visceral pleural surface. Although the procedure lends itself to screening large commercial flocks, further research is needed to investigate whether commonly used ultrasound features can be used to diagnose and stage OPA disease, potentially before gross

Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA), caused by Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV; family Retroviridae, taxon species Betaretrovirus ovijaa), is a viral oncogenic lung disease in sheep. Its metastatic potential remains under-evaluated. We investigated macrometastases (MACs), micrometastases (MICs), and isolated tumor cells (ITCs) in regional draining lymph nodes (DLNs) using histopathology and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Samples from 41 lung tumors and their regional DLNs were obtained from slaughtered Țurcană sheep. Histologically, all cases were diagnosed as OPAs. The classical or mixed OPA

A South African isolate of ovine lentivirus was shown to cause a mild immunosuppression in sheep, reflected by a reduced delayed hypersensitivity reaction. This effect, measured in terms of skin swelling after intradermal inoculation with tuberculin, showed a positive linear relationship with the latency period before the appearance of jaagsiekte symptoms in animals co-infected with JSRV, as well as with the activity of monocytes. In a parallel study, increased susceptibility of lentivirus-infected sheep to infection with Pasteurella haemolytica was demonstrated. It is concluded that the lenti

This study was conducted with the objective of identifying the types of gross and histopathological lesions in lungs of sheep slaughtered between March 2013 to February 2014 at Kermanshah abattoir, west of Iran. A total of 1200 slaughtered sheep lungs was inspected during the study period. Pulmonary lesions were detected in 445 (37.08%) carcasses, grossly. Lesions were further subjected for detail histopathological examinations. On microscopic examination, most lungs had more than one type of lesions and thirteen different lesions were observed. The most common lesions were bronchopneumonia (1
