The family Adenoviridae includes non-enveloped viruses with linear dsDNA genomes of 25-48 kb and medium-sized icosahedral capsids. Adenoviruses have been discovered in vertebrates from fish to humans. The family is divided into six genera, each of which is more common in certain animal groups. The outcome of infection may vary from subclinical to lethal disease. This is a summary of the ICTV Report on the family Adenoviridae, which is available at ictv.global/report/adenoviridae.

In order to better understand the broad applicability of adenovirus (Ad) as a vector for human vaccine studies, we compared four adenovirus (Ad) vectors from families C (Ad human serotype 5 [HAdV-5; here referred to as AdHu5]), D (HAdV-26; here referred to as AdHu26), and E (simian serotypes SAdV-23 and SAdV-24; here referred to as chimpanzee serotypes 6 and 7 [AdC6 and AdC7, respectively]) of the Adenoviridae. Seroprevalence rates and titers of neutralizing antibodies to the two human-origin Ads were found to be higher than those reported previously, especially in countries of sub-Saharan Afr

INTRODUCTION: Fowl adenoviruses (FAdV) are infectious pathogens causing significant economic losses in poultry industry. Molecular, pathoanatomic, and pathomorphological methods are used for laboratory diagnosis of FAdV infection. The clinical picture and postmortem lesions are not sufficient to diagnose, unlike histological analysis. Histological examination reveals basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies considered a pathognomonic sign of FAdV infection. Despite the informative value of the histological method, it has a limitation - the long duration of the procedure, which ranges from 5 to

INTRODUCTION: Adenovirus infection occurs globally in the form of sporadic cases and isolated outbreaks. Human adenovirus type 55 (HAdV-55), endemic in China and South Korea, causes acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) of varying severity, both among the civilian population and in military units in different countries of the world. Genomic research facilitates reliable identification of HAdV-55. The aim of this study was to identify HAdV isolated in Moscow in 2022, as well as to conduct whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomic research.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: HAdV-55 was isolated

Adenoviruses cause economically important diseases in vertebrates. Effective vaccines against adenoviral diseases are currently lacking. Here, we report a highly conserved epitopic region on hexon proteins of adenoviruses that generate a strong immune response when used as a virus-like-particle (VLP) vaccine, produced by inserting the epitopic region into the core protein of hepatitis B virus. For evaluation of its protective efficacy, the epitopic region from a representative adenovirus, fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4), was tested as a VLP vaccine which conferred 90% protection against ch

UNLABELLED: The relevance of the conducted study is determined by the high epidemiological significance of adenovirus in the structure of acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI), particularly among military personnel. Previously, adenovirus was identified in 90% of cases of patients with community-acquired pneumonia hospitalised from organised military groups, leading to significant lung damage, various disabling complications, and possible fatal outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity of adenoviruses detected in patients with respiratory infections among mil

Diarrhea is the third leading cause of death in developing countries in children under the age of five. About half a million children die of diarrhea every year, most of which in developing countries. Viruses are the main pathogen of diarrhea. In China, the fecal virome of children with diarrhea has been rarely studied. Using an unbiased viral metagenomics approach, we analyzed the fecal virome in children with diarrhea. Many DNA or RNA viruses associated with diarrhea identified in those fecal samples were mainly from six families of Adenoviridae, Astroviridae, Caliciviridae, Parvoviridae, Pi

UV C LEDs are an emerging technology offering wavelength-specific control for microbial inactivation in water and wastewater treatment. As these systems advance, complementary monitoring methods are needed to accurately evaluate the treatment performance and viral persistence in complex effluents. This study developed and evaluated an in-line granular activated carbon (GAC) sampling device designed to concentrate large volumes of wastewater from a full-scale UV C LED reactor. Compared to 1 L grab samples, GAC-concentrated samples recovered significantly higher nucleic acid concentrations (p <

Wild animals are considered reservoirs for emerging and reemerging viruses, such as the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Previous studies have reported that bats and ticks harbored variable important pathogenic viruses, some of which could cause potential diseases in humans and livestock, while viruses carried by reptiles were rarely reported. Our study first conducted snakes' virome analysis to establish effective surveillance of potential transboundary emerging diseases. Consequently, Adenoviridae, Circoviridae, Retroviridae, and Parvoviridae were identifie

Human adenovirus (HAdV) is an important respiratory virus in children, but sequence-level evidence for HAdV-related signals in lower respiratory tract samples remains limited. In this study, we analyzed metagenomic next-generation sequencing data from 189 bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) libraries from pediatric and adult clinical cohorts, including 30 pediatric and 159 adult patients, together with laboratory environmental controls. MEGAN read-level classification was used to screen for Adenoviridae-related signals. HAdV-related contigs were further reviewed, and a BALF-derived HAdV-B-rela

Double-stranded DNA viruses of the realm Varidnaviria (formerly PRD1-adenovirus lineage) are characterized by homologous major capsid proteins (MCPs) containing one (kingdom: Helvetiavirae) or two β-barrel domains (kingdom: Bamfordvirae) known as the jelly roll folds. Most of them also share homologous packaging ATPases (pATPases). Remarkably, Varidnaviria infect hosts from the three domains of life, suggesting that these viruses could be very ancient and share a common ancestor. Here, we analyzed the evolutionary history of Varidnaviria based on single and concatenated phylogenies of their MC

Adenoviridae is a family of double-stranded DNA viruses that are a significant cause of upper respiratory tract infections in children and adults. Less commonly, the adenovirus family can cause a variety of gastrointestinal, ophthalmologic, genitourinary, and neurologic diseases. Most adenovirus infections are self-limited in the immunocompetent host and are treated with supportive measures. Fatal infections can occur in immunocompromised patients and less frequently in the healthy. Adenoviral vectors are being studied for novel biomedical applications including gene therapy and immunization.

A male kowari (Dasyuroides byrnei) originating from a zoo facility was delivered for post mortem evaluation in Hungary. Acute lobar pneumonia with histopathologic changes resembling an adenovirus (AdV) infection was detected by light microscopic examination. The presence of an AdV was confirmed by obtaining partial sequence data from the adenoviral DNA-dependent DNA-polymerase. Although the exact taxonomic position of this novel marsupial origin virus could not be determined, pairwise identity analyses and phylogenetic calculations revealed that it is distantly related to other members in the

Adenovirus is a kind of non-enveloped,double-stranded DNA virus. As a member of the mammalian adenoviruses of the Adenoviridae family, porcine adenovirus causes gastrointestinal disease in piglets. In this study, the modified adenovirus was manipulated to carry a green fluorescence EGFP marker. The modified adenovirus was added to medium199 for co-incubation or microinjected into the cytoplasm of porcine oocytes. The effect of adenovirus on the first polar body extrusion was not significant during porcine oocyte maturation. Our data demonstrated the zona pellucida plays a vital role in porcine

Occupational exposure to pathogens can pose health risks. This study investigates the viral exposure of workers in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and a swine farm by analyzing aerosol and surfaces samples. Viral contamination was evaluated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays, and target enrichment sequencing (TES) was performed to identify the vertebrate viruses to which workers might be exposed. Additionally, Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) was conducted to estimate the occupational risk associated with viral exposure for WWTP workers, choosing Human

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) affects infant and young children. A viral metagenomic approach was used to identify the eukaryotic viruses in fecal samples from 29 Thai children with clinical diagnosis of HFMD collected during the 2012 outbreak. These children had previously tested negative by PCR for enterovirus 71 and coxsackievirus A16 and A6. Deep sequencing revealed nine virus families: Picornaviridae, Astroviridae, Parvoviridae, Caliciviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Adenoviridae, Reoviridae, Picobirnaviridae, and Polyomaviridae. The highest number of viral sequences belonged to human rhi
