Adiposity during early adulthood, changes in adiposity during adulthood, attained adiposity, and mammographic density among premenopausal women.

PURPOSE: We investigated the associations of adolescent adiposity, changes in adiposity during adulthood, and attained adiposity with volumetric mammographic density measures. METHODS: We recruited 383 premenopausal women who had a routine screening mammogram at the Breast Health Center, Washington University in St. Louis, MO from December 2015 to October 2016. Trained research personnel assessed current adiposity measures. Weight at ages 18 and 30 were self-reported. We evaluated mammographic density measures: volumetric percent density (VPD), dense volume (DV), and non-dense volume (NDV) us

Signals of adiposity.

Adipose tissue, a reserve of energy, has played an essential role in mammalian evolution. Adipose tissue differs from other tissues in that its mass has considerable capacity to expand, which while beneficial in decreasing the risk of starvation, increases the risk of predation. Adipose tissue mass is thus under tight control in nondomestic species. Adipose tissue secretes a variety of factors, some of which (leptin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha, resistin) are thought to be involved in modulation of adipose mass. Leptin has a variety of functions, primarily targetting the hypothalamus whe

[Nutrition, adiposity and health].

Calorie intake is an important determinant of health. Excessive energy intake is associated with abdominal obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and premature mortality. Calorie restriction (CR) without malnutrition increases maximal lifespan by preventing many age-associated chronic diseases and by preserving function at more youthful-like states in rodents. In overweight and obese humans CR improves metabolic health and reduced mortality for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. In middle-aged healthy lean individuals CR causes many of the same cardiometabol

The physiology of adiposity.

Normal energy homeostasis requires a balance between fat storage and energy utilization that is guaranteed by regulation of one billion fat cells which arguably constitute the body's largest endocrine unit. Such physiology is required to maintain normal adiposity which if depleted from under- or malnutrition results in lipodystrophy that causes hormonal, reproductive, and developmental abnormalities. Conversely, excess adiposity provides inflammatory secretagogues, particularly from central visceral fat depots that enhance insulin resistance, excessive fatty acids with lipotoxicity and hyperte

Association of the Chinese visceral adiposity index with marrow adiposity in postmenopausal females.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) and vertebral proton density fat fraction (PDFF). METHODS: The study included 181 postmenopausal females including 53 normal bone mineral density (BMD), 88 osteopenia, and 40 osteoporosis. Vertebral marrow PDFF was measured using Fat Analysis & Calculation Technique imaging, and BMD was assessed via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Bone turnover biomarkers and lipid metabolism were evaluated. The relationship between CVAI and PDFF was assessed using multivariable linear regression models, generaliz

Early Adiposity Rebound Predicts Obesity and Adiposity in Youth with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia.

INTRODUCTION: Youth with classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) have higher prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors such as obesity, abdominal adiposity, and hypertension. Patients with CAH also exhibit an earlier adiposity rebound (AR) compared to normative populations. However, the predictive relationship between AR and cardiometabolic risk factors needs to be better understood. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study at a US tertiary pediatric center in youth with classical CAH due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency. AR was determined by cubic polynomial modeling. A subset

Adiposity in Depression or Depression in Adiposity? The Role of Immune-Inflammatory-Microbial Overlap.

Some of the most common and debilitating conditions are metabolic disorders (metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) and depression. These conditions are also exacerbated by the fact that they often co-occur. Although the exact mechanisms underlying such relationships are poorly known, antipsychotic medication and antidepressant use, diet and physical activity, and lifestyle factors are believed to play a role; however, their high co-occurrence rate suggests a possible pathophysiological overlap. This paper reviews several possible bases for this overlap, including hypothalam

Neonatal Adiposity and Childhood Obesity.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the longitudinal association of neonatal adiposity (fat mass percentage) with BMI trajectories and childhood overweight and obesity from ages 2 to 6 years. METHODS: We studied 979 children from the Healthy Start cohort. Air displacement plethysmography was used to estimate fat mass percentage. Child weight and recumbent length or standing height were abstracted from medical records. Overweight and obesity were defined as BMI levels ≥85th percentile for age and sex. Mixed-effects models were used to examine the association between neonatal fat mass percentage and BMI tra

Adiposity and spinal cord injury.

The drastic changes in body composition following spinal cord injury (SCI) have been shown to play a significant role in cardiovascular and metabolic health. The pattern of storage and distribution of different types of adipose tissue may impact metabolic health variables similar to carbohydrate, lipid and bone metabolism. The use of magnetic resonance imaging provides insights on the interplay among different regional adipose tissue compartments and their role in developing chronic diseases. Regional adipose tissue can be either distributed centrally or peripherally into subcutaneous and ecto

Clinical imaging of marrow adiposity.

Research examining bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) has rapidly expanded during the last two decades, leading to advances in knowledge on the role of BMAT in the pathogenesis of bone loss and endocrine disorders. Clinical imaging has played a crucial role for the in vivo assessment of BMAT, allowing non-invasive quantification and evaluation of BMAT composition. In the present work, we review different imaging methods for assessing properties of BMAT. Our aim is to review conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), water-fat imaging, and single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Excess adiposity and gastrointestinal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Excess adiposity is a risk factor for incidence of several gastrointestinal cancers, but it is unclear how these epidemiological observations translate into clinical practice. METHODS: Critical appraisals and updated analyses of published systematic reviews were undertaken to quantify cancer risk associations better and to assess the impact of weight-reducing strategies (surgical and non-surgical) on cancer prevention. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: A large volume of evidence demonstrates that body mass index (BMI), as an approximation for general adiposity, is a risk factor for the dev

Early nutrition and later adiposity.

The objective was to review whether nutrition during pregnancy and the first 3 y of life predisposes individuals to be fatter as adults. The roles of undernutrition, overnutrition and breastfeeding were considered. The evidence that poor nutrition in early life is a risk factor for increased fatness later in life is inconclusive. Overnutrition, as proxied by high birthweight or gestational diabetes, on the other hand, is associated with subsequent fatness. Two large, well-conducted studies in developed countries suggest that breastfeeding has a protective effect. Nutrition in early life has a

Genetic predisposition to adiposity, and type 2 diabetes: the role of lifestyle and phenotypic adiposity.

AIMS: Genetic predisposition to adiposity is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D), even in the absence of phenotypic adiposity (obesity and central obesity). We aimed to quantify the overall contribution of obesity and modifiable lifestyle factors to the association between genetic predisposition to adiposity and the development of T2D. METHODS: This prospective cohort study involved 220 703 White British participants from the UK Biobank. It examined the associations between genetic predisposition to adiposity [body mass index polygenic risk (BMI-PRS) and waist-hip ratio polygenic risk (WHR-

Plasma Bile Acids More Closely Align With Insulin Resistance, Visceral and Hepatic Adiposity Than Total Adiposity.

CONTEXT: The etiological mechanism of bile acid (BA) effects on insulin resistance and obesity is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to determine whether plasma BAs are elevated in human obesity and/or insulin resistance. METHODS: This observational study was conducted at an academic research center. Seventy-one adult volunteers formed 4 groups: lean insulin-sensitive (body mass index [BMI] ≤ 25 kg/m2, Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance [HOMA-IR] < 2.0, n = 19), overweight/obese nondiabetic who were either insulin sensitive (Obsensitive, BMI > 25 kg/m2, HOMA-IR < 1.5, n = 11

Adiposity phenotypes are associated with type-2 diabetes: LAP index, body adiposity index, and neck circumference.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adiposity phenotypes can be detected by anthropometric indexes associated with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Besides body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), new indices seem to be able to identify T2DM. This study aimed to evaluate independent associations of T2DM with lipid accumulation product (LAP index), neck circumference (NC) and body adiposity index (BAI) in patients with hypertension. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 430 patients with hypertension. The T2DM diagnosed was standardized. WC and NC (cm) were measured and BMI was ca

Visceral Adiposity and Risk of Depression Independent of General and Central Adiposity: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is a metabolically active fat depot linked to cardiometabolic disease, but its relationship with depression independent of general and central adiposity remains unclear. We investigated the association of MRI-quantified VAT with the incidence of depression and evaluated whether it predicts depression risk beyond the body mass index (BMI) and the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). METHODS: We analyzed 50,729 UK Biobank participants who underwent abdominal MRI between 2014 and 2020 and had no history of depression at baseline. Baseline VAT volume, BMI, and

Visceral adiposity: A major mediator of the relationship between epicardial adiposity and cardiorespiratory fitness in adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Epicardial adiposity has been positively associated with visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Few studies have examined the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and epicardial adiposity. Furthermore, whether this relationship was independent of VAT remains unexplored. Our purpose was to investigate the contribution of VAT in the relationships between CRF, physical activity (PA) and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) in asymptomatic women and men. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the associations between EAT and VAT measured by magnetic resonance imaging, CRF measure
