AIMS: To evaluate the clinicoepidemiological profile of trauma patients admitting to an apex trauma hospital in east India. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A prospective observational study was performed during the time period of December 2018 to July 2019 on trauma patients admitted to the Trauma and Emergency department. MET

[Nonagenarian patients admitted to Spanish internal medicine hospital departments].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the demographic and clinical profile of nonagenarian patients admitted to Internal Medicine departments in Spanish hospitals, and to compare it with younger patients. METHODS: We identified, through the MBDS (Basic Minimum Data Set), every patient older than 90 years admitted to Internal Medicine Departments of the Spanish National Health Service public hospitals between 2005- 2008. Hospital discharge data were obtained from the MBDS. A diagnosis-related group (DRG) was identified for every patient. The DRG 21.0 version was used. We compared this nonagenarian group with

Description of multimorbidity clusters of admitted patients in medical departments of a general hospital.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify patterns of disease clusters among inpatients of a general hospital and to describe the characteristics and evolution of each group. METHODS: We used two data sets from the CMBD (Conjunto mínimo básico de datos - Minimum Basic Hospital Data Set (MBDS)) of the Lucus Augusti Hospital (Spain), hospitalisations and patients, realising a retrospective cohort study among the 74 220 patients discharged from the Medic Area between 01 January 2000 and 31 December 2015. We created multimorbidity clusters using multiple correspondence analysis. RESULTS: We identified five

Incidence and prevalence of hospital-acquired infections in a cohort of patients admitted to medical departments.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital-acquired infections (HAI) are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Only point prevalence analyses of HAI have been recorded in Denmark. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and prevalence of HAI in patients admitted to departments of internal medicine. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved seven departments and was designed as a cohort study based on reviews of medical records. Except for patients who had previously been admitted within the preceding 30 days, the study included all patients admitted for more than 48 hours during the 45-da

Quality of dying in the ICU: is it worse for patients admitted from the hospital ward compared to those admitted from the emergency department?

OBJECTIVE: Although most intensive care unit (ICU) admissions originate in the emergency department (ED), a substantial number of admissions arrive from hospital wards. Patients transferred from the hospital ward often share clinical characteristics with those admitted from the ED, but family expectations may differ. An understanding of the impact of ICU admission source on family perceptions of end-of-life care may help improve patient and family outcomes by identifying those at risk for poor outcomes. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cohort study of patients with chronic illness and acute res

An investigation of temperature and fever burdens in patients with sepsis admitted from the emergency department to the hospital.

AIM: We sought to collect granular data on temperature burden to further explore existing conflicting information on the relationship between temperature alterations and outcomes in patients with sepsis requiring hospital admission. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study that enrolled a convenience sample of patients with sepsis or septic shock admitted to the hospital from the emergency department (ED). A "unit of temperature burden (UTB)" was defined as >1°C (1.8°F) above or below 37°C (98.6°F) for 1 min. Fever burden was defined as the number of UTBs >38°C (100.4°F). The primary obje

Characteristics and costs in adults with acute poisoning admitted to the emergency department of a university hospital in Belgium.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to assess the characteristics of all acute poisoning admissions among adult emergency department (ED) patients, to identify factors associated with admission and to calculate direct medical cost. METHODS: Data of 2017 (1st January to 31st December) were collected and analyzed retrospectively using patients' medical records and hospital invoices. Factors associated with type of hospitalization were identified using appropriate statistics. RESULTS: A total of 1,214 hospital admissions were included, accounting for 3.6% of all ED admissions. Bacteremia in adults admitted to the Department of Medicine of Bangui Community Hospital (Central African Republic).

To determine which pathogens are responsible for bloodstream infections in Bangui and to which antibiotics these pathogens are resistant, we conducted a prospective study of the bacteria isolated from the blood of febrile patients hospitalized in the department of medicine of the Bangui Community Hospital after the failure of antimalarial treatment. One hundred and thirty-one patients were included in this study. Bacteria were identified in 49 blood cultures (37.4%). Eleven different species were identified. Bacteremia was more frequent in HIV-positive patients than in HIV-negative patients. S

Baseline predictors of in-hospital mortality among patients with chronic kidney disease admitted to the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) contributes significantly to emergency department (ED) presentations in low- and middle-income countries. These patients frequently have multiple comorbidities and face high in-hospital mortality. However, limited data exist on early predictors of mortality at ED admission. Identifying key clinical and laboratory features associated with adverse outcomes may support timely risk stratification and targeted interventions for acutely ill CKD patients. AIM: To identify baseline predictors of in-hospital mortality in adult Indian patients with CKD admitted

Clinical and Pharmacotherapeutic Profile of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Admitted to a Hospital Emergency Department.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is closely associated with other pathologies, which may require complex therapeutic approaches. We aim to characterize the clinical and pharmacological profile of T2DM patients admitted to an emergency department. Patients aged ≥65 years and who were already using at least one antidiabetic drug were included in this analysis. Blood glycemia, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and hemoglobin were analyzed for each patient, as well as personal pathological history, diagnosis(s) at admission, and antidiabetic drugs used be

Clinical Survey and Predictors of Outcomes of Pediatric Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Admitted to the Emergency Department.

Pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a rare event with severe sequelae. Although the survival to hospital-discharge (STHD) rate has improved from 2-6% to 17.6-40.2%, only 1-4% of OHCA survivors have a good neurological outcome. This study investigated the characteristics of case management before and after admittance to the emergency department (ED) associated with outcomes of pediatric OHCA in an ED. This was a retrospective study of data collected from our ED resuscitation room logbooks dating from 2005 to 2016. All records of children under 18 years old with OHCA were reviewed

[Accumulation of severe Streptococcus pyogenes infections among children admitted to the pediatric department of a county hospital].

In one month, an unusually high rate of severe Streptococcus pyogenes infections occurred at the Children’s Department of the Bács-Kiskun County Hospital. The pathogen caused serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions. All but one of the patients were from the same municipality, raising the possibility of spread of the invasive clone in this community. Rapid clinical deterioration was observed in all our cases. International literature data support the periodic clustering of different invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections with different clones responsible. The role of different

A Study on Clinical Presentation and Histological Diagnosis of Lymphadenopathy Patients Admitted In Department of Medicine in A Tertiary Hospital.

Lymphadenopathy is a common problem encountered in day to day clinical practices in Bangladesh. It is an abnormal increase in size and/or altered consistency of lymph nodes. The condition generally is not a disease itself but a symptom of one of many possible underlying problems. So it is very much essential to achieve a correct diagnosis of patients presenting with lymphadenopathy. This cross sectional study carried out at the Department of Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Mymensingh over a period of 6 months from January 2014 to June 2014.
