Adolescent sexuality and sexual behavior.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adolescence is a time of self-discovery and physical, as well as cognitive, development. It is within this context that adolescent sexual development and sexual behavior occur. While curiosity and experimentation are normal, sexual behaviors, both coital and non-coital, place adolescents at risk for undesired consequences including sexually transmitted disease acquisition and pregnancy. Trends in adolescent sexual behavior are changing, and health care professionals must be aware of these trends to provide necessary medical care and education to this population. RECENT FIND

Gambling behavior in adolescent substance abuse.

This study assessed the prevalence and correlates of gambling behavior (GB) in adolescent substance abusers (N = 97) consecutively admitted to an outpatient treatment program. Thirty-four percent of the cohort had never gambled; 57% were classified as social/nonpathological gamblers; 8% were labeled as in transition gamblers; and only 1% met criteria for pathological gambling. A significant finding was that males are more likely to gamble and to have a higher severity score than do females. A younger age of GB onset is seen for girls than boys and is correlated with a history of suicide attemp

Maternal employment and adolescent risky behavior.

This paper examines the impact of maternal employment during a child's first 3 years and during adolescence on his or her decisions to engage in a range of risky behaviors: smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, using marijuana and other drugs, engaging in sex and committing crimes. Using data from the NLSY79 and its young adult supplement, we do not find strong evidence that mother's employment--whether early in the child's life or during adolescence--affects the likelihood of participation in risky behaviors. We note as a caveat, however, that insufficient statistical precision makes it diffi

Alcohol, drugs, and adolescent sexual behavior.

In a 1990 Massachusetts-wide random digit-dial telephone survey of 16-19 year olds, 66% reported sexual intercourse of whom 64% had sex after drinking and 15% after other drug use. Thirty-seven percent always used condoms. Forty-nine percent were more likely to have sex if they and their partner had been drinking, and 17% used condoms less often after drinking. Fewer, 32%, said they would be more likely to have sex if they and their partner had used drugs, with 10% less likely to use condoms after drug use. Since so few adolescents consistently use condoms, the greatest risk for HIV, sexually

Sexually Predatory Behavior in an Adolescent Female.

This report describes a rare case of an adolescent female with a history of unspecified depressive disorder, disinhibited social engagement disorder, and significant history of sexual trauma at an early age, who initially presented with suicidal ideation. During the initial evaluation, the patient was found to have engaged in sexually predatory behavior toward younger boys, including solicitation and inappropriate sexual behavior. This report discusses relevant literature on the prevalence, risk factors, and treatment for this behavior among female adolescent sexual predators, as sex offenders

Adolescent cigarette smoking and health risk behavior.

During the past 30 years, tobacco use among adolescents has substantially increased, resulting in major health problems associated with tobacco consumption. The purpose of this study was to identify adolescent smoking behaviors and to determine the relationship among smoking, specific demographic variables, and health risk behaviors. The sample consisted of 93 self-selecting adolescents. An ex post facto design was used for this study and data were analyzed by using nonparametric statistics. Findings included a statistically significant relationship between lifetime cigarette use and ethnicity

Primary care management of adolescent sexual behavior.

Adolescents continue to engage in sexual behaviors that place them at risk for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, and pregnancy. Recent advances in the prevention and management of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy may eventually lead to fewer negative consequences associated with adolescent sexual behavior. This paper discusses scientific and technologic advances in the management of adolescent sexual behavior such as the use of DNA amplification tests to detect genital chlamydial infection and the new female-controlled contraceptives.

Parent-child communication and adolescent sexual behavior.

Data collected over a two-year period from more than 500 teenagers and their mothers indicate that neither parental attitudes toward premarital sex nor parent-child communication about sex and contraception appear to affect teenagers' subsequent sexual and contraceptive behavior. Teenagers are often ignorant of their parents' attitudes toward sex-related issues, and they and their parents often contradict one another in describing the kinds of sex-related conversations they have had. In only two cases was a significant relationship found between communication and adolescent behavior: Girls who

Prescription Opioid Misuse and Risky Adolescent Behavior.

OBJECTIVES: Misuse of opioid medications (ie, using opioids differently than how a doctor prescribed the medication) is common among US adolescents and associated with preventable health consequences (eg, severe respiratory depression, seizures, heart failure, and death).1 New guidelines and recommendations have made providers more attuned to overprescribing and more vigilant about screening for opioid misuse.2 We hypothesized that youth who misused prescription opioids were more likely to report engaging in a broad range of other risky behaviors. METHODS: We used the Centers for Disease Cont

Rural Mexican-American adolescent sexual risk behavior.

CONTEXT: There is a need for community-based, culturally sensitive, cognitive-behavioral interventions to reduce sexual risk behavior among minority adolescents. Studies of adolescent risk and protective behaviors have focused on identifying modifiable psychosocial variables that predict differential outcomes for subsequent intervention efforts. Research has been scarce in studies of rural minority adolescent women. PURPOSE: To examine the protective and risk behaviors of these rural Mexican-American adolescent women and their relationship to physical or sexual abuse. METHODS: Mexican-Americ

Childhood behavior problems and adolescent sexual risk behavior: familial confounding in the child and adolescent twin study in Sweden (CATSS).

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found associations between childhood behavior problems and adolescent sexual risk behavior. Using a quasi-experimental approach, we examined the extent to which this association may be due to between-family differences (i.e., unmeasured familial confounds) not adequately explored in prior research. METHODS: We used data from a longitudinal, population-based cohort of young twins in Sweden (first assessment: age 9 or 12 years; second assessment: age 15; n = 2,388). We explored the nature of the association between symptom scores for attention deficit hyperactiv

Internet gambling, substance use, and delinquent behavior: an adolescent deviant behavior involvement pattern.

Internet gambling among adolescents is a growing phenomenon that has received little attention to date. This study examines associations between Internet gambling and the severity of gambling, substance use (SU), and delinquent behavior among 1,870 Quebec students aged 14 to 18. The results show a higher proportion of Internet-gambling (IG) students reporting problematic substance use and delinquency, compared with nongamblers (NG) and non-Internet gamblers (NIG). Furthermore, a higher proportion of at-risk and probable pathological gamblers are found among IG compared with NIG. A moderating e

The breakdown of meaning and adolescent problem behavior.

This paper attempts to account for the upsurge of adolescents' problem behavior in high-income countries in terms of Lifton's paradigm of symbolic immortality. Whilst most of the works dealing with this subject focus on the level of the individual adolescent and his or her surrounding, Lifton shows that societal processes can affect the individual. Drawing upon his approach, it was argued that desymbolization,--the collapse of society's symbols system--produces "divided selves," individuals who harbor an 'aggressor-victim double' in their psyche, wherein an internal conflict between the aggres

Adolescent substance use and sexual risk-taking behavior.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship of adolescent substance use and dependence to sexual risk-taking behavior in late adolescence and young adulthood. METHODS: We prospectively examined self-reported sexual behaviors and substance involvement questionnaires in a sample of youth in substance abuse treatment programs and a comparison sample of sociodemographically similar community youths without histories of substance use disorders recruited from media ads. Assessments of sexual behaviors and substance involvement (78% white, 51% female) were collected at 2, 4, and 6 years after initial asses

Geographic Isolation, Compelled Mobility, and Adolescent Risk Behavior.

We explore alternative hypotheses regarding the association between activity space racial composition and risk behavior among Black-identifying urban youth. Racial isolation perspectives argue that exposure to Black segregated neighborhoods limits access to mainstream institutions and influence, increasing participation in risk behavior (violence, delinquency, and substance/alcohol use). An alternative compelled mobility perspective argues that Black youth spend a substantial amount of time in low proportion Black, largely white neighborhoods seeking organizational resources typically less ava
